Use the Win2k boot loader. You don't have to modify boot.ini but once.
Here's mine:
===========snipy here=======
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=c:\linux.bin
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional"
/fastdetect
C:\linux.bin="Debian"
===========snipy here=======
What I usually do is mount my win2k C: drive under linux, then when I
install a new kernel:
# dd if=/dev/hdaX of=/win2k/linux.bin bs=512 count=1
where X is the partition where lilo writes the boot block. You should
create an emergency boot floppy, consisting of the following files
from C:
boot.ini bootsect.dos linux.bin ntdetect.com ntldr

I just got Linux-Mandrake 7.2 and have tried to install it. How to I set up
the Promise Ata 100 Controller that is built into my Asus A7v Motherboard?
It asks me If I use a Scsi Device, but Ignores me If I say no, and none on
the drivers in the list seem to work. I am very new to Linuz, (about 2
hours experience) any help is extremely appreciated.

Well I finally got Rh 6.1 to install, (after many attempts). After
configuring my resolution and monitor type and testing out X, I rebooted my
computer to enjoy the fruits of my labors, and all I get on the screen is a
seemingly endless supply of 101010101010101010110,.......etc.
My guess is that this is a common result of doing something wrong. Can
somene please let me know what I screwed up and how I might be able to fix
it?
Loads of thanks in advance

Hi,
I'm just about to give your suggestion a try. Do I run "Xconfigurator" at
the command prompt, or is it some abbreviation? Obviously if it is just
running "Xconfigurator" then it will be fine. If it's an abbreviation,
please could someone reply to what the actual syntax is?
Thanks all of you.

Could I recommend mondo backup... it creates multiple CD backups of your
system from linux (it can even backup windows partitions), the first of
which is bootable.
Find it in freshmeat.net

you need the LBA extensions

This is bad!
You should never try to write LILO code on a FAT partition
You're lucky that /sbin/lilo failed, or else windows would be unbootable.!
(Allthough it could be restored it again)
change the line to
boot=/dev/hda

remove "compact" from this line

That's also good info.

> I'm sorry if i'm asking too many questions :)
You can't ask to many questions,
You can however try to resolve some on your own
There's a lot of documentation on LILO, and it's already on your system.
try `locate lilo` (you may need to run `updatedb` first)
and read the User_Guide.ps file (gv /path/to/User_Guide.ps)
If you change the lilo.conf, run `/sbin/lilo -v` again
(Don't forget to change the boot= line, the current assignment is
dangerous!)
Now you should be able to boot from your HDD.
(PS. keep that linux bootfloppy too, it may prove to be very useful in the
future)
