I installed Red Hat Linux 7 to a second partition (Win2K on the other) and
I have to boot with a floppy, which is ok. The problem is that I boot to
a command prompt. When I've used linux in the past it would boot to a GUI
screen that gave me an option to go into GNOME or KDE. This is probably
easy to solve, but I know a lot about the windows environment and nothing
about Linux. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to learn
Linux on my own. Thanks,
Taylor

Personally, I think it is better to boot to a command prompt. Just login
and type "startx"
It should start X with the default window manager (KDE, or probably GNOME).

Check you are loading the right libglx - you want to be loading the NVIDIA
provided one and not the Mesa one. Look in /var/log/XFree86.0.log and scan down
the messages until you find libglx. If you are loading the NVIDIA one, it will
have a copyright notice with NVIDIA Corporation next to it - Mesa will have an
XFree (c) message. If you are loading libglx.a, that is the Mesa one - go to
the location of this library and rename it to libglx.a.mesa. Run ldconfig as
root and then try starting X. Cross your fingers!

Subject: lilo and minimize linux
Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 17:55:24 GMT
I am trying to fit linux onto a 60 MB harddrive. Obviously, the
drive is too small for a standard linux installation.
My first question is how to install lilo on the drive and make it
boot linux. I tried to partition the drive using: fdisk /dev/hdc (the
drive is connected as secondary IDE master). I just assign
a single partition #1 (hdc1). Then I make the file system using mkfs, and
then mount the harddrive as /mnt/d. Then I copy a few file from
my original RedHat 6.1 over. Here is an output from "ls -l /mnt/d"
total 927
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4568 Oct 17 14:33 boot.b
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 285018 Oct 17 16:19 initrd.img
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 250 Oct 17 17:17 lilo.conf
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 12288 Oct 17 14:30 lost+found
-rw------- 1 root root 13312 Oct 17 16:21 map
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 622784 Oct 17 16:18 vmlinuz
The new modified lilo.config is as followed:
boot=/dev/hdc
map=/mnt/d/map
install=/mnt/d/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
default=linux
image=/mnt/d/vmlinuz
label=linux
initrd=/mnt/d/initrd.img
read-only
root=/dev/hdc1
I then run: /sbin/lilo -C /mnt/d/lilo.conf
I then reboot the system and configure the BIOS to boot from the
secondary master IDE (it can boot up fine from a secondary master IDE
with DOS). However, I only get a bunch of 01 01 01 ... on the screen.
What did I do wrong ? What am I missing ?
I apologize for the long email. Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
hung

Start out by moving the 100dpi fonts before the 75dpi fonts. In
/etc/XF86Config, shuffle the FontPath statements around. I don't know
if it helps or is necessary to do anything with the fontserver too,
but cycling it couldn't hurt. I think.
Doing:
grep -i font ~/.xsession
grep -i font ~/.xinitrc
grep -i font ~/.Xresources
grep -i font ~/.fvwmrc # insert your wm rc file!
will show you what's over-riding the defaults.

Everything installed ok until i went for the first reboot. It hung
time after time. Tried various partitioning schemes. One time I got
the L...then the I... and then hung (when you see LILO....). Something
about the bios accessing the mbr or the /boot partition i set up on one
scheme. i couldn't create the boot diskette either. before going down
for reboot the console shows: vmlinuz does not exist.

Perhaps you should be installing lilo onto /dev/hdc1 ?
Otherwise, the lilo documentation is extensive.

If you don't want to edit system configuration files, the easiest way is
to fire up linuxconf, go to the 'control' panel and select the 'control
service activity' item. Find the 'smb' entry and click on the 'automatic'

I've been trying to setup SuSE 6.4 with Win98 using LILO to create a
dual-boot PC, but, even though I have written LILO to the MBR, or copied
the LILO configuration onto a floppy, all I get when I re-boot is:
LI
and a frozen keyboard!
The partitions on HDA are:
hda1 - FAT32
hda2 - Linux
hda3 - Linux swap
hda4 - Non-OS suspend disk
My BIOS gives me the option to boot in the following order:
(a) A, C, SCSI
(b) C only
(c) CDROM, C, A
(d) C, CDROM, A
but none of them are really helpful , although (c) lets me boot into
Linux via the installation CDROM, and (a) lets me boot into Win98/DOS
via a floppy.
Any suggestions?.............Phil

I'm getting set up to compile my first kernel (to upgrade
to 2.2.17) and as a backup I decided to make a copy of my
current /boot partition, to be called /boot2, and make
a boot disk that would boot it in case the new kernel
didn't work.
So I went into cfdisk and made a little 2-cylinder, 16MB
partition, /dev/hdb9. But it just showed it as "Linux"
rather than "Linux ext2". fdisk showed it the same as
my other ext2 partitions, though: type 83h.
When I tried to format it with mke2fs, I got the
following error:
/dev/hdb9: Invalid argument passed to ext2 library while
setting up superblock
Anyone know what's wrong here?

Usually that's the machine you are telnetting into failing reverse DNS
lookup.
So make sure that the machine you are telnetting from has a good
reverse DNS.
If it's your home network, then put IP and hostnames into /etc/hosts
on the host machine.

Both labels point to the same kernel image /boot/vmlinuz, which is the
existing RH6.1 kernel 2.2.16-3.
Change the image= line in the RH7 section to point to RH7's kernel, and
you should be golden.

I gave up on supermount because of these kind of problems. Just too
flaky ;)
Put lines in your /etc/fstab to specify device, file system and
mountpoint to make mounting easier.
eg
/dev/cdrom /cdrom auto noauto 0 0
/dev/floppy /floppy auto noauto 0 0
Then you can "mount /floppy" rather than specifying everything at mount
time.
If you find out how to fix supermount, please repost!

My ADSL on Linux works except that I can't see web pages without entering
the numeric address.
I know this is a DNS address issue. I called up my provider for DSL
(Verizon) and asked them for the DNS addresses. They told me that their DNS
addresses are proprietary. Is there any way I can use DNS address other than
my provider??? Is there any free service out there that provides DNS
solutions?
Thanks,
Pierre

Subject: Re: Is IPChains Script secure?
Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 20:45:59 GMT
Ok. A script file is very similar to a windoze batch file, albeit far
more powerful. The actual term batch file has historical meanings
related to early mainframe users, who had to time share one machine -
they would submit a batch of files for processing (typically number
crunching, be it scientific, accounting or whatever), that would be
processed when the machine got around to it. Script files don't
generally care about time, as time issues are better dealt with by other
tools, such as cron or anacron.
As for your rules. If these are your only rules, then I'd start to worry
right now. If you have visited any dubious websites recently, then I'd
start to panic now. Ok. Breathe. Subscribe to comp.os.linux.security,
and spend an evening reading the posts there. There is a really good
firewall script generating site, whose address I can't remember, but you
will find it countless times in the posts in c.o.l.security. After you
have better locked down you site, I'd suggest using rpm to verify your
binaries (assuming your distro uses rpm).

What a bunch of idiots. Proprietaty nameservers? They are in the wrong
business. Try:
ns1.bellatlantic.net 199.45.32.40
to start with. I got that with nslookup, so it isn't too proprietary.
(Verizon is Bellatlantic?)

Yep, that's it. LILO goes in 4 stages after which the letters `L' `I'
`L' `O' are succesively printed to screen after each stage. hda2 is
probably beyond the 1024 cylinder limit of older LILO's and that's why
it hangs after the second stage.
Their are several solutions to this:
1) Use GRUB as the boot loader
2) Upgrade LILO to the latest version
3) Boot from floppy when you want to get at linux.
*OR*
4) Use a partition manager (goto [links] at the site below) to move the
partitions down by about 20 meg so that you have:
hda1 - /boot (20meg)
hda2 - FAT32
hda3 - / (Linux root)
hda4 - Linux swap
This moves the /boot directory to within the 1024 cylinder limit and you
can boot from the hard disk as usual.
