I don't know if your kernel (and other tools) are compiled for your
processor. They might be `optimized' for a 386. However, I don't
think this would make a large difference. The hard drive speed
definitely does.
Try the command `hdparm -i /dev/hda' or whatever your hard drive is.
This should list the modes that the drive is capable of. However, it
maybe that your IDE controller isn't recognized. Do you have your
mother board documentation? It should have the chipset used to do
this stuff. For mine it is Aladdin Ali chipset, for an AMD-K6.
I needed this code in my kernel before I had my hard drive using the
faster setting. For your info, drives are about 3-6MBps with PIO. Using
the UDMA, they are 22 MBps and higher (using hdparm -Tt to test).
There is a UDMA Howto/Mini-Howto.

Your hardware is fairly new and will probably need some better
drivers.

Hi all,
I have successfully installed RH6.2 on a compaq 1200 laptop. I also am
using the built in linmodem. After numerous attempts of trying diferent
configs in /etc/rc.d/rc.local I found that if I put /sbin/insmod/ -f
lt.modem Then setserial /dev/ttys14 uart 16550 as the last two
lines the linmodem works. Now the questions.....
How do I see what the connection speed is through my isp?
I'm using the KDE X windows configuration. This is a windoz 98, RH 6.2
booting to linux by default with LILO. I also was able to mount the
cdrom and the hda1 windoz partition. I'm learning on a very slow curve.
Was also able to get an icon on the desktop to mount the hda1. Kewl!!
Loaded up a bunch of linux news groups for reading and feel fairly
comfortable, but not up for trouble shooting yet.
Another question is I get a pop up saying something about
"file:/Linux%20modem/" but I think it has to do with unresolved symbols
from the lt.modem file for an earlier version of RH.
Sorry for rambling but I'm having fun in here
thanks

The first things to play around with are -c1 and -m settings. Check the
results with -tT or is it -Tt. I never did figure out the dma setttings,
but Mandrake optimizes that for me anyway. I actually get better results
disabling dma for my hdc anyway, maybe because it is on the same ide
channel as my cdrom.

Has anyone here been able to get their USB Zip Drive to work? I am
just now reading the stuff on it, but I am confused whether I need to
upgrade to the 2.4 kernel or if I can make it work with kernel 2.2.15.
Either way, I would like to know a few people who might be able to
give me some tips once I jump in.

I figured part of it out, must use the no_accel option, and also the
sw_cursor to keep the cursor from being a big stupid block. Unfortunately,
the no_accel makes screen refreshing slow. Darn, I had this really crisp in
6.2. One step forward two steps back.

Hello all,
I'm trying to get my upgrade from RedHat 6.2 to 7.0 to work. I install
it and
the screen looks great, but if I open an application the screen gets
garbled. It looks like it repeats things over and over like the top bar
of an application all over the screen. I'm running this on a S3 Savage
4 video driver with 32 Mb video RAM. Even the graphic install from CD
had some garbling
problems. Not a good sign. This previously worked with XFree86 3, but
now something is wrong. Any suggestions? It seems like a parameter
problem, but which one I haven't a clue.

the most important is hdparm -c1 turning on 32 bit file transfers. SuSE is
very conservative and probably defaults to 16 bit, which is ssssslow.
I also remember people having trouble with more memory causing the puter to
run slower and 128 mb pops into my head. In the linux faq there's a section
"When I add more memory my system slows to a crawl?" Also you may have to set
mem: 128mb in lilo. Read the manual and do it right, I'm just drunk and
babbling.

Another option is to get a switch box. The box has male/male inputs for
multiple mice, keyboards, and monitors (some have ethernet too). The
mouse, keyboard, and monitor you use will plug into the back of the
switch box instead of a computer. All you then have to do is turn the
dial to switch to another computer. Could be that time to get your boss
to spring for a bigger desk. :)
Exceed doesn't do sound.

You should create DOS partitions from DOS or Windows. One problem is that
Disk Druid tends to consume your entire disk with an extended
partition. So you probably want to create a primary DOS (or
FAT32) partition first.

Subject: wheel mouse help!!! IMPS/2
Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 21:37:57 GMT
Okay guys, I want to get my wheel working. I have imwheel and I have
a great webpage on setting it up. However, I have run into a large
barrier that can probably be fixed in a matter of minutes. I say
large only because, my mouse become inoperable if I make the following
change...
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "PS/2"
Device "dev/mouse"
Emulate3Buttons
EmultateDelay 50
EndSection
to the following:
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "IMPS/2"
Device "dev/mouse"
Resolution 100
Buttons 5
ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection
...my mouse goes wacky. Just to let you know, I have the Intellimouse
Explorer by Microsoft. I have narrowed it down to the Protocol
line...if I choose "IMPS/2" my mouse drifts and I can use any of the
buttons. Now, to get the wheel working, I have tried to just use
"PS/2" with imwheel -k, but the wheel won't work with that selection.
I have XF86 3.3.6-14mdk, so it seems that it is "upgraded." I don't
see why I am getting wacky mouse and why my wheel won't work. It
would make me very happy if we could work through this one.
Thanks!

Actually, LILO is even more powerful. I know the latest versions of LILO
have an option called "lba32" that can be entered in the /etc/lilo.conf file
in place of where "linear" may be. I did that on my 30GB HDD, where my
linux partition is WAY beyond the 1024 cylinder.
