Subject: I've broken it !! Win 2K RedHat 6.2 boot
Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 09:09:27 +0100
Well I thought I knew what I was doing, but alas not so.
Last night I installed an additional hard disk onto my system so that I
can install RedHat 6.2 on it as well as having Windows 2K on the
original disk. I set up all my partitions, the RedHat installer goes
away and then formats and creates the partitions on the disk, no
problem. I then tell the installer that I want to use lilo to boot
whichever operating system and that I want Windows to be the default
operating system to load (so that when the lilo prompt comes up I either
type "win" or "linux") for whichever operating system I want.
This does not work !! instead I get the lilo prompt coming up and then a
load of "0707070707077070" on my screen ??? I had this thing happen to
me ages ago but instead of "0707070" I got a pile of "0101010"
The only way I can get the system back up is using the linux boot
floppy, I have not tried booting Windows because I do not have a boot
floppy handy, I'll get one from work today.
Any Ideas how to fix this would be appreciated.

It can't find a makefile with a config rule. This probably means you are
in the wrong directory.
You need to be in the directory /usr/src/linux when you issue that
command in order to configure the kernel:
# cd /usr/src/linux
# make config

Well, show us your /etc/lilo.conf, and the result of fdisk -l /dev/hdX
(the relevant discs I mean) perhaps then we can help you.

Did you install the kernel source?
Did you cd into the /usr/src/linux directory and then give the command?

Do you have the kernel sources?
Where are you when you issue this command (pwd) (you should be in
/usr/src/linux)

Just to clarify this - the fdisk mentioned here is not the DOS program
of this name but a Linux program. The linux version is very different
(and much more powerful - it can set partition types for all sorts of
OSs as well as Linux/DOS). You will need a Swap partition and Native
partition as a minimum. I suggest you use Disk Druid for the first
installation you do, it is supposed to make it easy ;-) - if all goes
wrong then try fdisk.
> AFter I get that all installed, I will need to get Apache also, correct?
Apache will be installed if you do a 'Custom' installation & select the
web server (or something like that) option.
The installation will leave Apache in an operational state - that is you
should be able to point a browser at your box - even from itself and get
a test page displayed. This page resides in /home/httpd/html as
index.html. Assuming Apache hasn't changed much since the last RedHat it
also installs the Apache documents which can be reached by clicking on
the link on the test page.

Seconded... I would recommend if it is an onboard card disabling it in
BIOS and buying a cheep soundblaster card and using that instead.
My Win98 install now works fine with after abit of swearing, but Linux
detects it, says it will load the driver, then says driver loader...
try doing anything and I get driver not loaded... lsmod shows the
sound driver as loaded, rmmod of the soundcard driver kills my system
with a string of errors... going to rebuild this weekend so will have
more info later.

My hdparm -i /dev/hdb tells:
/dev/hdb:

IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, PIO modes: mode3 mode4
UDMA modes: mode0 mode1 mode2

In my ignorance I thought this means I can enable DMA. However, if I try
hdparm -d1 -X34 /dev/hdb
it tells me that is not allowed, and sets it back to 0. What does that mean
? The c1 option works, however.

Subject: Problem with ZIP SCSI external drive
Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 10:06:43 GMT
Bonjour,
First, sorry for my poor english.
I've got the Suse 6.1 dist. (kernel 2.2.5), and I
just begin with Linux. I've got problems with my
SCSI peripherals : I've got a SCSI Yamaha CDRW
drive, and a SCSI Zip 100 Mo external drive, both
connected on a Tekram DC 390. There are no
problem with my card, but I can't mount any of
those drives.
I use this command :
mount /dev/sda /mnt/zip (for the zip drive)
mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrw (for the CDRW)
I've got a message : "(...)/zip unkonwn
in /etc/fstab(...)" or "(...) invalid block device
(...)".
I choose the support of my SCSI card during the
installation, and it seems to work correctly :
the names "sr0" and "sda" appear during the boot.
Please help a poor french guy !
Thank you.

Hello.
I have a disk in "NORMAL" mode.
8354 cylinders.
My problem is that after the installation, i had a Dos primary partition
on this disk and an extended partition on only half of the disk.
Therefore, the logical partitions are limited to that extended
partition.
I don't see how i could open or enlarge logical partitions.
I've tried to create a new primary partition with fdisk but I don't know
how I could format and make it recognised by the system.
I've used mkfs. No way.
Maybe I could enlarge the extended partition ?
Is there a way without deletind all the logical partitions ?
Thank's for any help

Well if I could make an existing partition a little smaller and increase
/var it will help a great deal. POP3 e-mail is using up a lot of VAR.
Secondly - maybe getting a different hdd just for /var - once I have
partitioned it do I just make the changes in fstab ?
Thanx

GNU's parted (www.gnu.org)
Partition Magic
Both can do non-destructive resizing of partitions
But you *should* also be able to create two new primary partitions
without a problem.

it looks like you miss some data in /etc/fstab. also, the correct
block device is /dev/sda4 (Iomega choice!)
I'm not sure if you have automatic recognition of the filesystem. on
my 2.2.5 system I have got these two lines in the /etc/fstab (you need
to be root to edit them)
/dev/sda4 /mnt/zip ext2 noauto,rw,user,nodev,exec
/dev/sda4 /mnt/fatz vfat noauto,rw,user,nodev,noexec
obviously, you need to create these two mountpoints.
but, do yourself a favour and install autofs. I did so just a few
weeks ago and I don't want to live without any more. read the
HOWTO!!! it's quite good.

Well pardon me, but this seems to be untrue. Now I am by no means an expert
on this, but there does indeed appear to be a relation between /proc and the
available kernel functions. Certain files in /proc will or will not be
available, based on wheter the kernel supports certain features or not.
For example, if RARP has not been compiled into the kernel, there will be no
/proc/net/rarp file available. Similarly, one can determine the filesystems
supported by the running kernel by doing a 'cat /proc/filesystems', which
might give an outout like this:
ext2
nodev proc
iso9660
vfat
>From which one can determine that, indeed, ext2fs, iso9660 and vfat fs
support are compiled into the kernel.
As for the modules, if I choose not to compile my 3Com Fast Etherlink III
card as a module, I will not have a 3c90x.o file in my /lib/modules
directory. And if I do not compile my SoundBlaster PCI128 as a module, I
will not have a es1371.o file in there either.
There are probably millions of other 'compiled-in' and 'module compiled'
functions one can check for in these ways, but the truth is that the human
readable documentation on these topics is somewhat non-existant ;) But like
the original message-poster, I have now way of determining which /proc
directories and files, and which /lib/modules/*.o modules, relate to which
options in 'make config'. I guess you will have to be a programmer and get
in touch with The Source if you really want to figure this out, unless there
*is* documentation on this somewhere?

Then you can perhaps use GNU's parted, (it's not complete yet, so maybe
you cannot find the functionality you need, look at www.gnu.org for more
info)
You will certainly be able to use Partition Magic from PowerQuest, but
that is a non-free application.
If you would go with the extra HDD solution, you had best read the HDD
upgrade HOW-TO.
The procedure is in short :
1) partition new disk
2) format the new partition
3) mount to temporary mount point
4) copy current /var contents over
5) adjust fstab
6) remove old /var directory
7) umount new partition
8) create /var mountpoint
9) mount new partition to /var
