The answer to that is to use smbfs. You can then mount shares into
your filesystem. Sort of like NFS for windows shares (SMB).

Use netconf -if you've got KPPP working the you know all the
information netconf needs. It will allocate names to each connection as
you add them (Usually pppo,ppp1,ppp2 etc.) and once you've configured
them just do

if-up ppp0
or
if-up ppp1

etc.
You can also get netconf to start a conx automatically on boot for you,
and restore it automatically on disconnect, as well as making it so any
user can activate/de-activate the conx if you want that. Don't forget
to put DNS entries in as well.

The easiest way is to add a new HD, create a filesystem(s), copy
your present /var contents to it and then edit /etc/fstab to
mount the new filesytem as /var.

Otherwise, you could use a utility like Partition Magic or GNU
parted to resize the partitions on your present HD.

uuuuuh even when the kernel has USB support you will have to have a

On my RedHat6.2 system the /usr/X11R6/bin/X link points to a file
named /usr/X11R6/bin/Xwrapper e.g.:

[root@zephyr]# ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/X
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root /usr/X11R6/bin/X -> Xwrapper

[root@zephyr]# file /usr/X11R6/bin/Xwrapper
/usr/X11R6/bin/Xwrapper: setuid ELF 32-bit LSB executable,
Intel 80386, version 1, dynamically linked
(uses shared libs), stripped

The file /etc/X11/X is the link to the X-server binary e.g.

[root@zephyr]# ls -l /etc/X11/X
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root /etc/X11/X -> ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA

I think it should be the same on your RH6.0 system.

I have red hat 6.2 with 2.2.17 kernel
Adaptec 2940 U2W PCI controller card
Seagate Barricuda 9 GB St19273W Ultra Wide Drive, id 0
Seagate Barricuda 18 GB ST118273W Ultra Wide drive, ID 1 with terminator
enabled

Now, I have the Adaptec 7xxx driver compiled directly into the kernel

Every now and then, usually after heavy disk activity, i get the
following
messages, to the effect of, repeated on the console (outside of X) and
from here I can not do anything, as the system is unresponsive.

SCSI Host 0 abort (pid # xxxx) timed out - resetting
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0
SCSI host 0 reset (pid # xxxx) timed out again
Probably an unrecoverable SCSI bus or device hang

and these messages repeat over and over again for ever.
I can't re-boot, kill, unmount or anything.

I am pretty certain I have the termination set properly.
In the kernel I have experimented with various options of the 7xxx
drive, like enabling and disabling tagged command queueing

I don't know enough about SCSI drivers in linux to diagnose this problem

If anyone has some advice on where to start and how I can fix this,
please let me know

I don't really know, Lamar, but I don't see anyone answering; so I'll make a

kernel to me. The 'kernel' in the name is what makes me think so. Did the

I did find this address that has FAQ about the same rpm only an earlier

I was under the impression that you had to run make modules
modules_install after you booted to the new kernel. Also, I am not
sure what type of computer you have, but I know that if you have
something like PCMCIA, then you have to install that on the new kernel
as well. I am not sure if that is the answer you are looking for
though.

Do any errors show up in /var/log/messages about lost interrupts or read
errors? Even an old P100 box running Evergreen cpu upgrade (K6-2/400)
does this for an old WD 2.1 GB with no dma, just -c1 -m8 (up from 3 MB/sec
with no settings):

# hdparm -Tt /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 4.78 seconds =26.78 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 13.49 seconds = 4.74 MB/sec

My PIII 500 laptop with dma (9 GB IBM):

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 1.03 seconds =124.27 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 4.90 seconds =13.06 MB/sec

Note: Enabling -c1 -m16 -> 4.89 seconds =13.09 MB/sec
(statistical variation or not enough to worry about?)

Hey, I have Linux mandrake on a laptop! Maybe we should keep in
touch. As far as your startup goes, it should work in the startup
folder. I had gnomba starting automatically on startup before and it
was working fine. Now, I am not saying that it should on your
computer, I am just saying that is the way it is supposed to work.
Putting kppp in rc.local would be too early and it would not work
properly. You could check the message that was just posted on

"converting kppp scripts to ppp scripts"

as they were discussing starting the dialup before X began and
stopping it when X shutdown.

sure, no big deal....go to your user manager as root and set the
default group for you to "users". This can be done by using

kuser (at least that is the program for Mandrake)

and you should see where it is. To add yourself as a member of a
group, you have to go to the group setting and add the users you want.
In order for the group to read and write use

chmod g+r,g+w the_file.mp3

or for a whole folder

chmod -R g+r,g+w the_file.mp3

to change an existing folder to be part of a certain group, it would
be

chown -R .users mp3-folder (notice the period)

Maybe you forgot to mv or rm unused modules from
/lib/modules/modules-<kernel-version> when compiling for the same kernel
with less modules. So the old modules in the same modules dir are not
linked to your current kernel. Also I usually do a 'make install' at the
end, which updates /boot/vmlinuz, /boot/SystemMap, and runs lilo.

I usually put my resolutions in the other order, so it starts at 1024x768
and I can use Ctrl-Alt-keypad plus to blow it up if something is too
small (this is for my default 16-bit color depth):

    Subsection "Display"
