Subject: DOS program to test sound card?
Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2000 14:53:39 +0200

Hi all

I'm running SuSE 7 on a DELL Optiplex GX1. Everything is fine, except
the sound.
The YAST2 sound module reports no problem whatsoever, it autodetects a
Crystal soundchip, but pressing the test button causes no sound.

dmesg reports a problem with the MPU401 whatever that is.

isapnp: Card 'CS4236B'
isapnp: 1 Plug & Play card detected total
snd: unable to grab IRQ 0 for CS4236+ - MPU401
snd: warning: cannot allocate IRQ for MPU401, midi port is disabled

I'd like to figure out whether the sound works at all. This computer has
never run Windows, I don't have Windows, and I don't want Windows. Is
there perhaps some little dos program or something to just test the
sound, before I start digging into irq conflicts and all that hassle?

thanks

Hi everyone.
I'm wondering what the following disks are for?
7.0-i386-respin-disc1.iso
7.0-i386-respin-disc2.iso

How are they different from the 7.0-i386-disc1.iso & 7.0-i386-disc2.iso?

I will greatly appreciate all advise. Thanks.

How do I set up my Creative sound card? I run sndconfig and all it did was
to detect Ensoniq which is not my card! But during the setup testing, I
heard test sound ok - but very soft. I rebooted and still no sound.

Sorry I have been away for a while....

I described my problem at the beginning of the thread and this is what
worked for me...

Cable Modem
         |
         |
_______Switch __________
        |
        |
 RH 7.0 Linux Eth0
 RH 7.0 Linux Eth1

        |
 _______Switch _________
 | | | |
WS1 WS2 WS3 SRV1

I to started with the CM connected directly to my RH server and had
connectivity issues. I connected everything to my first switch and all
worked fine but I ran out of ports. I tried to use a 10MB HUB (cheaper than
a switch) to connect the CM and my RH server and I still experienced
intermittent connectivity issues (would die every 5 to 15 mins). I then
bought a second 10/100 switch and that worked!

I have been able to download all the RH 7.0 ISO (2 to 3 GB) files as well as
others from the net without loosing connection.

I have not had to reset my CM for over a week and I did not use any of my
systems (not Internet access) for five days. (At least in my area) It does
not seem @home monitors the usage of my connection and then "turn it off" if
I do not use it on a regular basis.

Best of luck

If it only had accepted calls from localhost, it wouldnt have been

Mhere do I place (links to) programs so that they start automatically

programs get run multiple times when I have more than one xterm open.
Also, I tried /etc/rc.d/rc.local, but that does not seem to work

What does chkconfig --list say?
Is network active? Have you compiled support for your network card into
the kernel, or do you have a module? Does /etc/conf.modules have an

I'm a newbie to Linux but want to gain some experience with it.
I am trying to install it on an old 8MB RAM 486/66 (Tandon) which has IDE
(basic!) and and Adaptec 1640B (EISA) interfaces.
Due to lack of CD support I had made the install floppies Boot and
Supplemental and put the other install distribution files onto a DOS
partitioned IDE desk on another machine on which I created 2 partitions.
Having transferred this HD to the 486, the intention was to format the
second partition with Linux and install onto that.
However the Boot floppy prompts for the Supplemental floppy then just
grinds away endlessly searching the hardware config. There seem to be no
way to get back to a $ prompt to get the disk formatted.
The QUE "Using Linux" tome which supplied this distribution says "at the
LILO prompt....". Not much help if you can't get to it!
I used this distribution because it promised to run quite happily on a low-
spec machine like this (Hey, it was state-of-the-art - in 1994!).
Can some kind soul steer me step-by-step into formatting the disk and
getting it installed.

Setting up RH7. Install boots fine from floppy image created from cd
set downloaded. It appears to detect an ATAPI CD on hdc when it starts
up (at least on the kernel boot info it says something to that
effect). I have run the "forced hdc" from boot: prompt as well as
letting it try and detect the CD drive - same outcome. I begin the
install and it goes fine until it calls for source of RPM's. When I
select CD - the program freezes and my cd rom won't respond to even
pushing the eject button. The CD works fine on Win95...

I only saw Hugh's followup, not the original post, and snipped Hugh's
reply. My printcap has a line something like this:

lp|lpl:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd:sh:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/lp0360:

The 'if=' refers to 'input filter'. lp0360 is a script in the directory
/var/spool/lpd/lp (it could be anywhere). That script detects if the
input looks like postscript and if it is, invokes ghostscript. You
could try something like that. Since my printer is an epson Stylus Color 600,
the script looks something like this:

#!/bin/sh
# ps_or_text_filter.sh
# This is a "magic filter" based on one in the Linux Printing-HOWTO.
# Checks the incoming file for Postscript or text and handles accordingly

read first_line
first_two_chars=`expr "$first_line" : '\(..\)'`

if [ "$first_two_chars" = "%!" ] ; then # Looks like PostScript
/usr/local/bin/gs -q @stc600pl.upp -sOutputFile=- - -c quit

else # It's plain text
echo $first_line # the stuff we grabbed before
cat # ... and the rest
        echo -ne \\f # ... and a formfeed
fi

It's based on something somebody provided for me when I asked about
printing postscript on usenet years and years ago.
