I added a redhat 7.0 machine to my network, its configured to use DHCP and
it works fine except the hub lights between it and my NT server with Sygate
as the DHCP server, go nuts! The NT server has 2 nic's in it and is my cable
internet "sharer" to my other computers on the network. The redhat computer
does make it "on-line" but those blinking light... Thanks for any
suggestions. Chuck

Thanks to you (and to 'Noble Pepper') for some good advice,
especially relating to backups.
Actually, back home in the USA, I haveWindowmaker running on one
of my machines and it seemed fine to me though I'm not yet
experienced enough to tell all the differences. I'm away from
home now, under foreign skies (Germany), but I've built myself a
little system I'm enjoying (keeps me off the streets and out of
trouble), and am using Linux a lot on it (tho' OS/2 on my
laptop).
Anyway, I'm downloading WM now and will install when I get a
chance; it may eradicate my file move problem though I wish I had
a good explanation of what's wrong.
I should have pointed out that the problem does not affect 'root'
or the dummy user I just installed this afternoon to see (and
compare).
Thanks also for the link to the documentation. I've got nothing
here.

Subject: Q: Printing from a linux m/c to a W95 printer
Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 22:14:37 GMT
Hello all,
I am trying to setup a linux machine so that I can use
a printer connected to a windows95 machine. The linux and
the windows95 machines are connected to each other through
a hub.
1. I have setup the printer in linux using printtool.
2. I have setup the windows machine networking using MS
network client/service. I can telnet to the linux machine
from the w95 m/c and can ping the w95 m/c from the linux one.
But when I try to print from the linux m/c to the w95,
nothing happens (no error msg and no printing). One thing I
have noticed is that the linux m/c is not visible from
"network neighborhood" of w95.
Can somebody point out what are the steps that I need to
do to make the printing possible ? Is Samba a must for
this ? If yes, how do I configure/run it (I have Samba
installed already) ?
Thanks.

Yes, Samba is a must for this. Best bet for samba info is the samba
website (www.samba.org). Or, once you have installed the samba rpms's
(samba-2.0.7, samba-clients, samba-common), go to
/usr/doc/samba-2.0.7/docs/htmldocs/using_samba for the html version of
the O'Reilly book 'Using Samba'

Your modem(s) may be a 'winmodem' which are designed for use only under M$
Windows, as they lack several key chips on the board to be a 'real' modem.
Please provide some more info, like what kind of Linux you are using, what
version, what other hardware you have (to provide insights as to potential
conflicts), what other kinds of modems you have tried. With a little bit of
work, we should be able to get this rolling.

RH6.2 has stood the test of time. RH7 has issues which may
frustrate a newbie. I feel it is better to ease a newbie
into Linux than dump him/her in the deep and hope all ends
well.
Now, mind you, RH7 works and works well. I know. I use it.
I also have a 6.2 machine that sees more work.
Hope this helps.

Sure just use the NT boot loader. Can't remember the exact method
but I believe it is possible.
I do know however that LILO must be installed in linux's boot partition
when using an alternate MBR boot loader such as NT's or Boot Magic.
(if boot directory is in same partition as root install lilo to root)
Maybe someone else can shed more light on this.

With reasonable-sized files it's probably better if you just paste them
in, rather than attaching them - or at least use MIME attachments so we
don't have to go away and manually decode the things. :)
>with the output of the update-menus script... what should i do???
Coo, they've started using Debian's menu package. When did that happen?
It looks like either they've broken the package or one of their other
packages has broken it, though, because I've never seen anything like
that on Debian ... maybe it would be worth checking in Mandrake's bugs
database.

One possibility is that /etc/conf.modules (or /etc/modules.conf)
explicity gives the path to old modules
(eg "path=/lib/modules/2.2.14")
in which case just deleting this line should do.

Thanks, I appreciate the reply, but still can't get results.
First, I brought the memory up to 128K, and stopped swapping, but the
problem persists. I have seen other people post questions w/ this
problem, but have not seen an answer.
I ran top, and some of the processes I suspect are: kflushd, kupdate,
kswapd, mdrecoveryd, kpiod. But, when I try kill -9 on any of these,
they don't go away!!

i'm trying to get my linux (rh 6.1) to recognize my hp deskjet 855c.
i was reading in a book on linux how to find out which port linux
configures your printer for by checking in /var/log/messages.
however, the book doesn't mention what to do when your messages file
says this...
modprobe: can't locate module parport_lowlevel
there are no other references to parport in the file. i know the port
works because i can print just fine to my deskjet 885c or my officejet

I can't be 100% positive of this, but you've probably completely
destroyed your Windows setup. Even though you got Windows to boot
again, I wouldn't trust it. When you re-partitioned your disk, the
Linux installer re-sized the Windows partition without resizing the
DATA on the partition. As a result, Linux files got dropped over parts
of the NTFS filesystem, probably trashing files in the process. When you
used FIXMBR, chances are it restored the partition table to the way it
was, leaving you with an NTFS partition that includes an embedded Linux
partition that's probably overwritten some files. As an analogy, imagine
taking an audiotape, winding it mid-way, and recording something new
over the existing music. You may be able to play the beginning of the
tape, but at least part of it is now destroyed.
> Q: Can someone tell me if or how a dual boot is achieved in this way without

I would recommend wiping the drive, creating new partitions, restoring
Windows from a backup (you DO have a backup, right?) or re-installing
it, and then installing Linux.
In the future, if you want to re-size an NTFS partition, use a tool
that's designed for this task, like PowerQuest's PartitionMagic
(http://www.powerquest.com).

That depends on how they're installed. If 98 and NT are on separate
primary partitions (that is, each thinks it's on C:, but the C:
partition seen from Win98 is not the same as the C: seen in WinNT), then
you just need to create appropriate /etc/lilo.conf entries to boot each
partition. If the two versions of Windows share a C: partition (which is
the most likely way the two are installed if you installed them using
the native Windows tools), then AFAIK LILO can't do it alone; you must
rely on NT's OS Loader or some other tool as a secondary boot loader.
