Linux Gurus:

I am installing Linux on an old 486 (actually AMDs 486/Pentium 133).
I have tried both Caldera and Red Hat. The problem that I run into
is that they seem VERY slow, not only in graphics mode but just in
text server mode. I was wondering if there is a streamlined version
of Linux that runs better on the older 486s. I thought I would make
this a firewall/mailserver/printserver, but with the speeds that
I have been able to get, it is much better as a Windows machine.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Subject: Configuring linux bootup and behavior
Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 00:57:44 +0100

I work for a school that has just installed a big Windows NT Terminal
Server (4.0.) All the computers around the school (including Macs, PCs,
and NetStation (these are TV type cable boxes that are based on Acorn
system)) have been setup to to run a program called "Citrix ICA Client"
which basically allows the user to log into the WindowsNT server and have
a session (this is just like logging into a linux box remotely using X
windows etc.)

Now, the problem is the computers in the library are very old and are
currently running the ICA Client ontop of Window 3.x which makes
everything very very sluggish. So we have decided to install linux on all
these machines and run the linux ICA Client on them. However, we need to
configure the system so that:

- When the system boots up it should, if possible without requesting a
login, run the ICA Client (which automatically brings up the WindowsNT
login screen.)

- When the user quits the ICA Client, the program should be restarted
(showing the login screen again) automatically.

- A user should not ever be able to reach the command line. But an
administrator should be able to, say, get access to another run-level
where he/she get a login prompt and then a shell.

- The linux system should be cut down to the bare essentials, that is,
core system, network, and graphical support for the ICA Client.

I need some help in understanding what needs to be running/loaded for the
graphical interface to be available? In my full installation of RedHat 7.0
if I run the ICA Client from run-level 3, I get a "Can't open display"
error. Running the program from within Gnome (in run-level 5) however runs
the program great. Now how can I avoid Gnome being visible and accessible?
Is it possible to load up the graphical support (X server?) and then just
run the ICA Client from the command line?

I've kind off understood how to control the boot up process using the
symbolic link files in the rc.d folder. But do I need to write a script to
run the ICA Client or just make a link to it?

Any help would be very much appreciated, thank you,
Keyk

the bootnet disk can recognize my NIC then RH7 should recognize it
too. During boot time there is a message saying "Delaying eth0
initialization." Any idea what's happening? Thanks.

You need to locate the kernel modules needed for the tape. Runing
'lsmod' before and after accessing the tape should help with this. If
you put the kernel modules on your rescue diskette along with insmod
(and other module utilities), you can manually insert the tape modules
and restore the tape. I did this with no problems.

It would be nice to have the rescue diskette automatically load the tape
modules, but I haven't figured out what is required for this.

It would be escpecially nice to have a "restore" diskette that
automatically loads the tape modules and runs a script to present the
user with menu options offering to format/partition/restore backup.

On AIX, mksysb creates bootable backups which offer to overwrite all
attached disk drives with the restored system. While our users have
accidently done this a few times, it just sets them back a day :-)

Without an installed bootloader in the MBR, the box won't boot. So you
have to install a bootloader in the MBR - if you do not want to use boot
disks for the rest of your life :-)

If Linux is the only OS on the box, I would definitely put lilo in the
MBR.

Hey Mike,

This should fix your problem.

Disable PNP support (or something like that) in your BIOS.
As soon as I did that the sound worked.

BTW, let me know what you find out about the ethernet/network problems.
I'm
trying to setup up my ADSL internet with Roaring Pengiun and have no luck.

Thanks.

I have an old gateway laptop. It is 100 mhz, with 16 megs of ram, and I
want to install linux on it so that it might have some use again!!! The
only problem is that the sucker is soooooo old that it is one with the
swapable cdrom and floppy drive. My delima is that
1. If I boot with a linux floppy I cannot insert the cdrom without
removing the floppy drive. By removing the floppy drive I force the
computer to powerdown.
2. The bios has no option to boot from a cdrom.

is there a way to make the harddrive bootable into linux(similar to the
bootdisk before instal)? Or does anyone have a better alternative? I am
open to anything so throw it at me
thanks in advance to all that took the time to read this, and many more
thanks to the ones that respond.

If it has a PCMCIA slot, you can always get a 10Base-T card, and install
from another machines CDROM. The cards cost about $50, and are well
worth it.

Also, I run DrakConf and check the Hardware condiguration. under

I'm not convinced. It works OK booting the rescue system, with exactly
the same step being executed. However, it was worth a look. Thanks.

You could boot with a DOS disk with a cdrom driver. Most linux distros can
boot directly from dos.

I had similar problems SuSE 6.4 & SuSE 6.3 + more serious problems. I
got around them by putting "linux mem=63M" (or variant "manual mem=63M")
at the boot: prompt. I have 64M of memory.

What you can try is something similar: take the amount of memory you
have, subtract 1M (or so ...) and use that as the number.

If you have a rescue boot disk, try booting on that. If not, get the
distro CD, and boot from that, and see if you can start a rescue system
from there.

Then you make some directories, mount the hard disk partition(s) on
them, and make the required fixups. ...

The SuSE linux CD has a rescue system, don't know about other distros.
