Putting LILO onto a floppy is a very wise idea.
  1) No 1024 cyl limit problem
  2) You don't overwrite the MBR for windows
  3) When you re-install / upgrade windows, you don't have to worry
about wiping out your MBR.
  4) A number of experienced people swear by a boot floppy.

Creating an extra partition is a completely separate issue I'm not
addressing.

The PCMCIA HOWTO tells you that you need to have the kernel
source tree (for whichever kernel you will be running the
PCMCIA modules with) installed (see
http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ftp/doc/PCMCIA-HOWTO-2.html).
Traditionally the location is /usr/src/linux.

Hi,

I tried to install the NS6 preview 3 on my RedHat 6.2, but got the
following error:

Gdk-ERROR **: Fatal IO error 104 (link rested) on X server sxxx:0.0.

I guessed it was because of Gdk, which I don't have. Strange thing
is that I can't find gdk package on the web. where can I find it?
Is it ok just to install jtk+?

Thanks

Linux runs quite well in text mode on my 486/33 with 20 Mb of RAM. If it
seems very slow on your 486 and Pentium 133, I'd suspect there's a
problem with your configuration.

How much RAM do you have?

If your site must use a non-root name server, you will need to set the

I really haven't installed anything to get the PCMCIA ethernet
recognized. So, maybe a better question is this: Do I need to install
drivers/packages/etc. for the PCMCIA sockets? When I use the probe
command, I get this: PCI bridge probe: TI 1250A found.

It may be a dumb question since the PCMCIA ethernet adapter is seen.
What leads me to this question is that I cannot get Internet access.

Subject: help with configuring linux mail server
Date: 24 Oct 2000 02:50:51 GMT

Hi Everyone,
I need help.......
I have a small network that uses linux as both a
firewall and mail server in the same box. This
linux serves as a gateway for my internal network
(i.e. 172.16.1.0/24 network). This linux box has
an external ip address of 199.0.216.222 network.
Everything is working properly such as NAT, ipchains.
Bottom, there is no problem as fas as connectivity
is concerns. As of of now, there are NO restrictions
on this box (i.e. default policy is ACCEPT all).

Over the weekend, I install mail server service on
this linux box. I also install POP2, POP3 and IMAP server
on this box as well because I would like users on my
private network to be able to receive and send mail
to users on the Internet. Here is my problem:

1) I can send mail to users on the Internet as long as
I am at the linux box (or telnet to it). However, users
on my private network would like to use email as well.
They use Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express
running on Microsoft Windows (I know, pitty me) to send
and receive mails. These users have valid account on the
linux box. There are no network connectivity problems.
I have been able to configure the Outlook
Express to receive emails on the POP3 server on the linux
box but I can not use SMTP to send mail to Internet users
via Outlook Express. How do I make this to work via
Outlook Express or even Microsoft Outlook? Please help.

Note: I don't have any restrictions as far as TCP wrapper
is concerns
Many Thanks.
David

If the Linux box doesnt have the queried address cached it WILL use the
Root.Cache list to start finding it. This is when the box begins knocking
on the firewall for port 53. A good administrator will not allow anybody to
have a service running that is not authorized by the security policy of the
company.

The 1024 limit is indeen a BIOS issue - as it pertains to the IDE
interface, SCSI has no such limitations. While I did not say that exact
fact I did identify it as an IDE problem.

Yes you must use LILO, IT is what loads Linux, XOSL as well as most
other boot loaders simply chain to the native OS's natural loader. LILO
should be put in the MBR of the alternate drive or first sector of the
partition Linux is in - NOT in the MBR of the first drive.

You do have the gdk libraries, they are part of the gtk+ package. It
is found at "/usr/lib/libgdk-1.2.so.0", which should be a link to the
current version. I would be suprised if you don't have this and are
running a default configuration for the RedHat distribution.

Hi all!
I am fairly new to Linux, and I'm running RH6.1 (latest kernel), and I'm

having trouble mounting my CD-Rom and Floppy. I was wondering if anyone
could help me in any way. The problem I'm having is that of getting an
error message which talks of an incorrect filesystem type, and this is
probably due to the fact that I have /etc/fstab incorrectly configured.
This is what I do have in the file:

/dev/hdb6 / ext2
defaults 1 1

/dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0

/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto
ro,users,noauto,unhide 0 0

none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620

Any help would be greatly appreciated as to how I can correctly
configure this file, and ultimatelly be able to succesfully mount my
CD-Rom and Floppy. Thanks a lot!

Run ntsysv and turn off anything you don't need. F1 will give you a short
description of each service.

You can also run top to see what is taking up the most CPU. Hitting the
capital"M" key will sort by memory usage ("P" goes back to CPU usage).

I bet there is! See http://lwn.net/2000/1019/dists.php3 for a list of
distributions.

You have missed out certain fields for both your floppy and cdrom drive
in the /etc/fstab file.

Try replacing your current cdrom line with this (it works for me):

dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,ro 0
0

Your floppy drive line should look like this (it works for me):
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner
0 0

Hope these changes work!!!

I have just installed RH 7 and find that USB is supported very well in
kernel 2.2.16.

Subject: Mandrake 7.1 and D link DE-220 network cards
Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 05:06:41 GMT

Ok, I give up - I spent the better part of 5 hours screwing around
trying to get Linux to recognize the DE220 card with no luck.
I read piles of how-to's and checked the deja archives (seems like
these cards give everyone problems) but no go.

This is my first Linux step and I just installed the thing so anything
'obvious' isn't really obvious .....

Here is what I have done:
I have disabled PNP on the DE220 and set i/o (300) and irq (12).
I have disabled the pnp bios on the computer
I have edited the /etc/conf.modules file and appended two lines as
below:
alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x300 irq=12

I re-booted (btw, every once in a while my mouse becomes almost stuck
when I reboot or get to the login screen - any ideas ?)

When I run linuxconf and enable the first network adapter and set it
to DHCP I get a message saying the device isn't there.
When I run th ehardware setup (drakeconf ??) I do not show a network
card

When I run lsmod I do not see the ne module loaded
if I do a modprobe eth0 and then another lsmod I see the ne module
unused but module 8390 is used by ne ?????

If I run ifconfig eth0 I see the right i/o, irq and it's seeing the
mac address.

I am totaling in the dark as to what to try next. I haven't got a clue
what I am doing under Linux.

HEEEEEEELLLLPPPPPP !!!!!!! <ripping out my hair>

Jens

PS.: while I am at this, I use @home and run that into a win2k server
machine with internet sharing turned on. From reading some of the
comments in deja, it appears that I can't use the built-in internet
sharing of win2k (nat router) to give the Linux box access to the
internet. Is this true ???? Why would win2k care ?
