Dear all,
I have a little rookie question for you: I installed a Mandrake 7.1
dist. of Linux on a big Hard disk.
For several reason, I have now to use a different version of linux,
installed on a little HD, and I don't know how to (after mounting the
Mandrake HD) configure the system in order to run the progs that are
stored on the Mandrake HD...
Any help will be welcome

Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 13:38:25 GMT
I have setup RedHat 6.1 on a Pentium 60 to run as a firewall for a
Cox@Home cable modem connection. I have created a packet-filtering
firewall using ipchains to masquerade packets from my internal network
(1 Win98 & 1 RedHat 6.1) and all appears to be working quite well. I
can telnet to the firewall from select hosts, both external and
internal, as defined in hosts.allow. I am now attempting to setup the
firewall machine for ftp.
I have installed wu-ftpd and configured ftpaccess and ftphosts
accordingly. When I attempt to connect from an authorized host, I am
propmted to enter a username and password. I enter a username/password
for a user that is authorized but the login always fails. I am using a
user that can connect via telnet. The /var/log/secure notes only the
connection and a failed PAM authentication. What else do I need to
configure?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have setup RedHat 6.1 on a Pentium 60 to run as a firewall for a

firewall using ipchains to masquerade packets from my internal network
(1 Win98 & 1 RedHat 6.1) and all appears to be working quite well.
I have setup Apache, PHP, and MySQL on my internal RedHat 6.1 machine
and now wish to have any http requests to my host passed thru to this
internal server. Currently, my firewall script is designed to deny any
http requests. I have read that I must use ipmasqadm to do this, but I
don't seem to have it installed (assuming I can get it at RedHat?). Is
this true? How do I use it? What ipchains rules must I setup to
forward the requests internally?
Additionally, I wish to pass any ftp and telnet requests through to the
internal server, as well, as I do not want any connections made
directly to the firewall machine. How can I accomplish this goal?
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Hi,
I've currently got RH 7.0 running on a 2.2.17 kernel. I downloaded
2.4.0-test9 compiled it and added it to lilo.conf. But when I select it
during bootup I ext2fs complains that it can't read the superblock.
Does anyone know what could be causing this and how I can fix it?
Thanx

Now make sure to run `/sbin/lilo -v` as root

Removing the 1 form boot=/dev/hda1 in the first line and running /sbin/lilo -v
solved the problem. I'm still curious as to why the install program did this so I
may avoid it in the future..

when a request arrives on ftp port (21), inted makes some checks about
the requester for the connection... you may want to simply deny any
request coming from outside (hosts.deny, add a line ALL:ALL)
and allow a request on ftp from the inside IP("ftp : 192.168." in the
hosts.allow for instance)... for more documentation, try man hosts.allow

How about just going to the Suse site (or even from your DVD which can be
read from your current Suse or from Win98 if you'd rather use rawrite than
dd) and make a standard YAST bootdisk for the Suse version (7.0) you're
trying to upgrade to. This bootdisk of course includes the correct version
of YAST. Then from the same directory make the supplemental disks modules
1 and modules 2 as well (check the bootdisk directory to ascertain whether
a special supplemental disk is required for your DVD drive; if so, make it
too). Then boot the 7.0 bootfloppy (with YAST 1.05) and, proceeding
through the YAST installation menu, load the hardware modules
as necessary from the supplemental disk(s), and install Suse 7.0.
Scarcely any mess at all beyond rawriting or DDing somewhere between 1 and
4 floppies. Say 20 minutes.
You could also, I suppose, just do an rpm upgrade of YAST first, then run
YAST as you were doing, but version upgrades of running Linux base
installations is never a very good idea, and you're better off using the
boot/module floppies.
Cheers,

Hi jeff,
You could very well have boot=/dev/hda1 on the first line, but I was
trying to pass you a simple solution. All this line describes, is where
to put the LILO bootcode. boot=/dev/hda, means put the code in the MBR,
boot=/dev/hda1, means put the bootcode in the bootsector of partition
hda1. If you would activate this partition, AND (and this was probably
wrong on your PC) have the original DOS bootcode there, than the
bootcode in that partition is executed.
So to clarify this even more:
BIOS first tries to execute bootcode on the floppydrive, if that's not
there, the bootcode in the MBR is executed. A normal MBR contains code
to execute the bootcode in the activated partition. You probably had an
old LILO in your MBR, which was unable to boot the kernel, because it
was no longer where LILO expected it (/sbin/lilo was not rerun) So if
you would have used a DOS bootdisc, and ran FDISK \MBR from there, the
original bootcode in the MBR would have been restored, which meant in
your case, boot from /dev/hda1, and it would have worked too.

Ok I have a little p100 and I have blow it away and tried to reinstall
it like a 100 this far. I was having much better luck in the early
stages than i am now. Let me describe a few of the problems that I am
continuiously running into and maybe you guys will have an idea.
Basically every time I run my machine for the first time none of the
services are listening for anything. Before they were ALL listening.
I want to be able to ssh and ftp to this machine, as well as have it
be a web page server. But I have been having no luck in like the last
20 times I have reinstalled it. Originally I wanted this to be an IP
masquerading and firewalling machine too. I still do, but first
things first. I have to conquer the simple services before tackling
the tough ones. IN the beginning I had one 3com 3c905b-tx NIC. Then
I started to play around with installing Mandrake 7.1 with 2 NICs, and
I tried a lot of different combos. Now I am back to just one so i can
get the services I really need(http, ftp, and ssh) up and running. Not
only will the box not listen but it also installs a second ethernet
adaptor. It calls it ipp0 and always gives it the same IP addy
(something like 168.x.x.x) But that IP does not belong to me and I
don't know where it is getting that from. Also i am able to http out
but not in. I am able to send mail out but not able to receive mail.
I am getting so confused. i have bought 4 books and none of them seem
to help me out. Could I have made a mistake on one install and linux
is redoing that same bad install over and over again? I reformat my
drives every time I reinstall mandrake 7.1. I had a lot less troubles
trying to get mandrake 6.1 to run, is 7.1 just a shitty distribution?
Should I be looking at something other than mandrake?
In the early stages of installing and reinstall 7.1 the prgram seemed
smarter. I mean it auto detected my my video and sound cards. Now It
can't find either and I can only get the video card by manually
telling linux what it is(the sound card was an AWE 32 and is now and
AWE 64). I am doing so much readin that i am confusing myself. I'm
just not getting the install process. I'm not willing to quit but the
current method of learning isn't fast enough for me. I keep beating
my head against a wall. Any suggestions how to learn linux better?
Perhaps some good beginner books or a cheap class that could help me
in getting started. Sorry for the long letter but I really want to
learn this stuff but seem to be getting no where fast. If you have
any questions please feel free to ask me here or write me at

I was just pointing out that linux doesn't need a huge amount of memory
to function properly. If you don't have enough memory, it'll use the swap
file and function properly, albeit really really slow.

After reading my post regarding doing some research, I did not mean to
imply that a person should not experiment. If I came across that way,
apologies. I still believe to reach a point of understanding with Linux,
that a bit of research and testing/experimentation will come in handy.
Let me revise my earlier statement a bit. There are difficult things to
get setup under linux. I believe that running X is one of them. You
have to know several variables or know that what the graphical setup tool
is telling you is correct. In several instances, using redhat, the
Xconfigurator tool reported errorneous values for a system I have with a
SiS card (I know, SiS... go figure :) ). But the main point I wish to
make is that one can learn through reading and research and one can also
take a good path by applying that with good, old fashioned
experimentation. I still think reading a lot about Linux either in
printed material or online can save a lot of grief later on.
I still agonize over setting up X. I admit to being an X junkie. I love
having several window managers running on my debian system. So I tend to
try and retry and retry X configurations.
The Linux online community is rich with technical data on how to do
things. I am still amazed at googling along with the level of detail I
can find on various topics.

Are these two cards sitting in pci slots which have the irq shared? My
situation with two pci cards were that while the system claimed to share
IRQs, Linux only reported device or resource busy until I physically
moved the sound card to a pci slot which did not share irqs. BTW, I was
using a SBLive and a Intel Etherexpress 100+.
