Since I last wrote, I've shut down my entire system - all 3 PCs, and pulled
out all cables. Left them that way for 8 hours. When I rebooted the whole
system, guess what? Everything worked OK.
My only gripe is that I'll have to do it again in another month or so.

Subject: Total Newbie: Kernel Panic
Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 22:59:49 +0100
Sorry if this is a boring question, but I seriously need help. I have the
6-CD version of SuSE6.3 which I'm trying to install to a second hard-drive
using Yast2. Following the procedure as described in the manual, I boot from
CD1 and at the welcome screen hit ALT to load the Yast2 extensions. The
'loading Linux' screen starts, but then I get the following as the last
three lines, after which nothing happens:
CPU: Cyrix 6X86 2X Core/Bus Clock stepping 06
Kernel Panic: Kernel compiled for Pentium+, requires TSC
In swapper task - not syncing.
This message also appears if I boot from the supplied floppy.
My configuration is:
Cyrix 6X86 150+, 64Mb RAM, HD1-8.6Gb Seagate, HD2-2.5Gb Quantum.
My main drive runs Windows 98 perfectly. Also, I can start a Linux
installation if I boot from CD2, but this uses the 'old' Yast, which is a
bit beyond me.
Can anyone explain what the 'Kernel Panic' problem is, and whether I can
actually use Yast2 with this configuration?
Many thanks,
DaveL

Hi,
I have got redhat 7 installed on my machine, at the moment i am trying to
get NFS working between two of my machines. when i type the rpcinfo -p , it
tells me that bash:bad command.
All the nfs services seem to start fine at boot time.
also the exportfs command does not work as well, I did a full redhat
installation, that is every single package was installed, so that means i
can't be missing any packges.
Can any one please give some idea what the problem might be....
Thanks alot.

Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 23:12:47 GMT
I installed Mandrake 7.0 and even upgraded the kernel, but can't
get my HP DJ 722C printer to work. As folks suggested, I got the
latest rpms for lpr, printtool, pnm2ppa, and rhs-printfilters.
No luck.
I finally got an old Epson 3000 printer and installed it using
DrakConf's Printer Configuration utility. Now I can get
this one to print, but only using PrintTool's test feature
that prints directly to the port. The spooled test feature
doesn't respond. Also, simple word processing utilities
won't print.
Obviously I need to do something to make the spooler
work. Maybe my spooler is still waiting for the HP
printer. Please keep in mind I have never successfully
set up a printer yet. So I may be missing something
really basic.
Can someone give me a hand?

Not too sure, but I found that things such as 'Tom's root boot' (the
linux on a floppy) couldn't read the newly RH7 formatted partitions, and
gave the same sort of error. RH6.1 could see the new partitions
okay though. So the problem wasn't actually with the disk (in my case).
In your case I would ask if you ran the RH7 lilo command after changing
/etc/lilo.conf. Again, I think there was a problem running older lilo
executables.
I'm now running 2.2.17, I tried the RH7 2.4.0 preview (test 6 I think) but had (the
above)
problems.

No problem, its just informational. I gues you have a cdrom, zip type device

ls -l /dev/hdb

I did it. I am able to get on the Internet. I was making things more
complicated than necessary. I never did install the pcmcia-cs
package. Since Linux saw the card, I figured there was no need to
install the package. The next hurdle to getting on the Internet was a
configuration issue. I'm on a cable modem that uses DHCP. I
installed the DHCP RPM from the CD and that was it. Seemed too easy,
but it's working!! Thanks for you help.

Hi there,
For the first time, I need to install Linux using a SCSI hard drive and

drives in the past, but never on SCSI hardware.
I find the process intimidating. Is this an easy task? Could someone please
recommend me a proven controller/hard drive SCSI combo solution that works
great with Linux? I need a HD of 20GB approx. I would like the controller/HD
to be recognized and configured by the Linux installation process, as I do
not know how to install linux drivers by hand. Hope I am not asking too
much! :-)
Many, many thanks in advance and Best Regards,

What are you talking about? Are you trying to compile a kernel? If so, then
probably your kernel sources are broken or unclaen. Try to get from ftp.<your
country>.kernel.orgthe latest 2.2.x kernel source files. After building the
kernel, you can use make clean, but I prefer a rm -fr /usr/src/linux-2.2.x ; tar
xzf /<where the kernel source tarbal is stored>/kernel-2.2.x.i386.tar.gz (or
something like that..., I always build them on the other pc).
Try if it works now, if not, mail me.
By the way, make menuconfig is way better than make config. Even better than make
xconfig, IMHO...

assuming the source hd is /hda and the dest is /hdb: try dd if=/dev/hda
of=/dev/hdb
(if you want to copy partitions, use the /dev/hda1,2,5,6... An image
from a cd
is also easier to make with dd than with obscure progs like mkisofs... I
beleive, in this way you can even burn a (less than 700 meg in size of
course...) harddisk or partition to a cd. Though you'ld have to mount it
as
ext2 instead of iso9660. haven't tried it, though. (BTW, I don't think
it's
still bootable then)
RTFM (of dd!)

During startup, all services are started sequentially. Especially ppp,
which causes a long wait; it is reported as [FAILED] anyway (probably
because it takes longer than the timeout) and restarted in the
background; when needed (after X is up), it works. How can I turn off
the waiting time for this (and other) services? I.e. I want everything
started in the background, to expedite the boot process.
By the way, where is the script that starts if-ppp at boot time and
shuts it down during halt? The latter is particularly superflous since
it never succeeds before power down.

It may *say* "SB compatible", but the CS423x chips are very different
from SB chips. Did you run "sndconfig"? If that fouls up, try the
following set of commands:
modprobe sound dmabuf=1
modprobe cs4232 io=0x534 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=9
modprobe opl3 io=0x388
You may have to use 0x530 and not 0x534 for the io= in cs4232. After
executing those commands, the speaker(s) should click, and you should be
able to play a sound through /dev/dsp using, f'rinstance, "wavplay
$SOMEFILE.wav".
>How can I determine what other application, if any, is indeed using
>the audio device? Is there a test program which will tell me
>whether the problem is a hardware or software problem?
There's a useful utility called "fuser" which can tell you what (if
anything) is using a file. Your audio device is almost always /dev/dsp,
so "fuser /dev/dsp"? This sounds to me like your sound is configured
incorrectly, unless you can already use your sound card with wavplay or
xmms or any other sound-playing program.
If you can already play sounds via programs other than RealPlayer, the
problem is with RealPlayer. Search comp.os.linux.* for "Realplayer 7.0"
with http://deja.com/home_ps.shtml for info--I don't use it and so can't
help you with configuring it. HTH,

Did you try it before mucking about with ftpaccess and ftphosts? It works

(in /etc/hosts if not DNS)? I have not touched ftpaccess or ftphosts, I
just limit it with hosts.allow and hosts.deny.

although you could just go back to your linux install and delete the linux
partitions from there
there is an improved fdisk utility called aefdisk.exe which may be
downloaded from
www.bootdisk.com (abt. 3/4 of the way down) it will handle dos and linux
(and NT) partitions.
to get your mbr back just do a fdisk/mbr
this can be done from dos fdisk or aefdisk

I think you have to install a Linux kernel source. It is likely your present
Linux source tree is incomplete.
Try this as root;
cd <enter>
puts you in /root directory
mkdir kernel <enter>
cd kernel <enter>
wget ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2/linux-2.2.17.tar.bz2 <enter>
You should now have linux-2.2.17.tar.bz2 compressed kernel tree.
Lets clear the way for a fresh install;
rm -r /usr/src/linux <enter>
tar yxvf linux-2.2.17.tar.bz2 -C /usr/src <enter>
Rename the present kernel source tree;
cd /usr/src/ <enter>
mv linux linux-2.2.17 <enter>
Make a symbolic link;
ln -s linux-2.2.17 linux <enter>
Now have a look;
cd linux <enter>
Now;
make menuconfig <enter>
When you have picked out everything you want to include in your kernel,
place a fresh clean floppy disc in your drive and;
make mrproper dep bzdisk modules modules_install <enter>
When it's done;
mv System.map /boot <enter>
Reboot using the image on the floppy.
If there are problems, don't worry, your original Kernel is still on the
harddrive and will boot like always.
You may want to edit your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file, commenting out
references to modules you no longer are using and un-commenting out those
that you do need.
If you want to make your new kernel the default just compile "make bzlilo"
instead of "make bzdisk".
Best regards,
Have fun.
