Run linuxconf and go to the section that lists all the services and if they
start up automatically or manually, and change them from there. to get a
description of what all the services do the best way is either on the net or
the man pages for that service.

Subject: ppp0 thru looped back modem. How to solve?
Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 02:12:19 GMT

Guys,

I've been fighting with my ppp scripts for some time now and I can't
solve my problem just with the HOWTO assistance.

My ppp-on script is interrupted by pppd because the interface ppp0,
pointing to /dev/modem is looped back! I can't find out what is
necessary to solve that!

If I connect manually with minicom and launch pppd manually, everything
works fine, as u can see ;-)

This is the output of the tail of /var/log/messages file.

Oct 24 21:47:06 freefly pppd[825]: Using interface ppp0
Oct 24 21:47:06 freefly pppd[825]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
Oct 24 21:47:11 freefly pppd[825]: Serial line is looped back.
Oct 24 21:47:11 freefly pppd[825]: Connection terminated.
Oct 24 21:47:12 freefly pppd[825]: Exit.

Tks for any assistance.

I assume you are level 5 when you start up.
$ su -
password: <secret>
# cp -r /etc/rc.d/rc5.d /etc/rc.d/rc5.d.bak    # backup your rc5.d
directory just in case you mess up.
# cd /etc/rc.d/rc5.d
# rm S##start_up_stuff                                                 #
remove the boot daemons you want to remove.

The shutdown stuff are those files K##shut_down_stuff

What port and irq did you uncomment for it in isapnp.conf?

Why would you set spd_vhi and irq 5 for a terminal? Your modem is
apparently /dev/ttyS2, not tty2. No wonder mingetty went into
convulsions.

Still no word whether you edited it for your port and irq.

Maybe because you never set port and irq for it in isapnp.conf and
setserial.

I had Netscape lock up on my once in KDE. At first I could still switch
to consoles, but eventually back in X the keyboard became unresponsive and
stayed frozen on that screen even after I killed everything X related from
my networked laptop. Had to reboot it from the laptop. One other time
after exiting KDE text in all consoles was black on black, still
responding, just couldn't see what I was doing.

When you partition the disk, make sure the partitions are the same.
for example.
old -> new        partition
hda1->hdb1      /boot
hda2->hdb2    swap
hda3->hdb3    /

lilo: linux single
# mount /mnt/new_harddisk
# # copy all directories under / to your new harddrive except you might want to
skip /proc because it is a virtual filesystem.
# cp -a /boot /mnt/new_harddisk
# cp -a /bin /mnt/new_harddisk
# # and so on and so on.

That card takes OSS drivers, shareware, about $30 US IIRC. I battled
with it too, finally gave up because I had to pony up the 30 bucks
before I could even test it, which ran against my grain.

I solved the problem by taking it back to the store and getting an
SBLive Value card. The driver for it is now part of the kernel source,
and the card is fantastic, or certainly is so to these ancient ears.

I'd suggest you do likewise, it will be far less headache in the long
view.

Cheers, Gene

During installation type " text expert"

During the early part of the installation, it will ask for SCSI/network card.
Pick from the SCSI card from menu.
I used an Adaptec 1520B, but it was not probed, I have to get the IRQ, DMA, etc
for it to work properly..

'sndconfig' is a RedHat/Mandrake thing, but does not support your card
anyway. There are commercial sound drivers available from
http://www.opensound.com/ (easiest) which you can try for free, but $30 to
keep (with YMF option). Or the alsa drivers now support Yamaha DS-XG

oh, yeah, you're right, I checked and the files /usr/lib/libgdk* are
there. That means, something else was wrong...

the cyrix 686 can definately cause a problem...and it looks like your kernel
was compiled for a
pentium...i understand that there are linux versions which can be made to
work with the 686...

 check this link:
www.tux.org/~balsa/linux/cyrix/

for 686 patches and a possible way to work around the design problems...
but you might just be better off with a pentium

You can use either cat or dd. However, you *SHOULDN'T* copy a filesystem
which is mounted rw. In that case you can very easily get an inconsistent
image which is worthless.

This will happen only if the caching dns server is not
set up to forward queries to the "official" nameserver.

Shortly after boot, the linux dns server will make a number
of queries to the "official" name server specified as the
forward host, and after a period of time, the cache will have
grown to a useful size, and the frequency of requests drop
to a very low level.

Undetectable, clean, and a good network citizen as well.

Hi all;

Iam using redhat 6.2.

How do I use .forward to scan thru my mail (with maybe grep) looking
for mail to a certain email address. The email address could be in the
to header or in the recieved header ...etc...

I then want each mail to then be forwarded or bounced to another user.

The senario is the user user1 uses fetchmail to download mail from
my@isp the mail can be for either my@isp or for mine@isp. I want email
for mine@isp to go to/bounce to user2.

I need something like

grep "To: mine@"  mail user2
grep "for mine@" mail user2
grep "for <mine@" mail user2

Any help would be very welcomed...

Hi all;

Iam running redhat 6.2.

The inn intall doc says to place the command;

su news -c /usr/local/news/bin/rc.news

in to the system boot script. The problem is the rc.news file is not
located there but in /etc/rc.d/rc.news and what/where is the system
boot script?

It also says that I can manually run innd by running rc.news, but when
I try to run it with...

./rc.news

While in its directory, it says there is no command. rc.news is owner
news, group news.
