Whether it is supported by Compaq is one thing...but depending on the
hardware it may be possible to do.

Additional protection: run a restricted shell, eg /bin/rsh. In most
decent shells, you just create a symlink to it with a name of r*sh, and
if it is called that way, it will implement a range of restrictions.
Read the man page for sh(1) or bash(1).

You could put in a zero or very small timeout on the boot: prompt. If a
zero timeout, then you have ready a rescue system that you use to boot
from.

You can still have a hard disk, just make it into one giant swap area.
Ensure you can't boot it.

What about write access to /var/log/messages ?????

>
> Just a few thoughts.

Some more thoughts:
1. Because these machines are on a network, you can have a very small
disk partition that boots, wipes out a 2nd disk partition, mounts an NFS
disk somewhere, and
gunzip -c /network/somewhere/library.tar.gz | tar xvf -
into the second disk partition.

2. I think it's a good idea to HALT (NOT reboot) the system upon exit
from the ICA client, to force the next user to reboot - this will
prevent any fake screen pranks.

3. Is it possible to run the ICA startup from the boot scripts (the
script should /bin/su -c the_citrix_client student citrix arguments)?
Then you need a rescue system to do work on it.

Hello Folks:
   I have a multi-os system with MS-DOS 6.22 (which I use for
DOS games), Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000
Professional, and Red Hat Linux 6.2. I have gotten all system hardware
to work with Linux except my Alaris Parallel Port WeeCam. Does anyone
know if Linux supports this piece of hardware with a driver and
application software? It would be nice if I could get this working in
Linux. As far as getting this and my WinTV card working in 16-bit
Windows, I'll probably have to write the drivers myself. If someone
could just point me toward a website I would be deeply grateful.

   TIA

Okay, I was excited to get my Canon BJC-80 printer working using the
drivers for the Canon BJC-600, so I decided it was time to share the
printer. I can get it to show up in Samba and in the Windows Network
Places (ME), however, when I add the printer on the windoze box and
attempt to print, I get that there was an unknown error in printing
and that I should restart the computer...however, that of course did
not solve the problem. I will put down here what I have entered into
Samba and see if anyone can offer advice:

[global]
   printing = bsd
   printcap name = /etc/printcap
   load printers = yes
   log file = /var/log/samba-log.%m
   lock directory = /var/lock/samba

#there is of course other stuff under [global], but it does not
#pertain to the current situation

[printers]
     comment = All Printers
     path = /var/spool/lpd/canon
     browseable = no
     public = yes
     writable = no
     printable = yes

[canon]
    comment = Linux printer
    path = /var/spool/lpd/canon
    printer name = canon
    public = yes
    writeable = yes
    printable = yes
    guest ok = yes

    print command = lpr -P canon

Hope someone can help.

I should be more specific so I don't waste anyone's time

with regards to connection attempts using xwin32..

the various parameters necessary for dynamic IP have been set ,
including use of command : xterm -ls-display $MYIP:$DNUM

I've established the following :

tcpd.conf has x-forwarding enabled

~commented out xdm-config
! DisplayManager.requestPort:0

~un-commented /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess
* #any host can get a login window

~set x-hosts to : 127.0.0.1

~run xterm as: xterm -ls-display $MYIP:$DNUM
also ran just "xterm"

XDMCP set to Query / autostart / wind_mo=default

installed all available fonts
     -------

xwin32 screen remains static grey on XDMCP - no login or error

shell reads (upon my entry of xterm comm. into shell):
xterm Xt error: Can't open display:

debugger reads :
     X-Win32 version 5.0.3 build 1
     Client 0 request 24 length 24 sequence 0xc
     Client 0 request 18 length 36 sequence 0xd
     Client 0 request 25 length 44 sequence 0xe
     Client 0 request 20 length 24 sequence 0xf
     . etc..
     .
     .
     XDM: too many retransmissions

     ~~~~~~~~~
rsh or rexec won't work either due to "connection refused" - yet they
are enabled
     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am not familiar with ssh1 and only a novice with linux.

The strange thing is that these specific errors should have been
relieved by the config changes I'd made.

EXCUSE the redundant post - i'd tried to provide more info on the
original by reply - got caught by deja's login - and it stripped the
reply header. - it's one of those days

the original post is below :

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 I'd appreciate any advice you've got on this one.
 I'm trying to configure my system so that I can use gnome by way of a
pc x-server (currently trying xwin32).
 This would be done through a ssh1 connection over the internet via
DHCP.
 Despite necessary modifications to inetd.conf , xaccess , and
xdm-config I've been unable to connect successfully -
 neither rsh nor rexec connections have worked either through these are
enabled.
 a few questions :
 Is ssh1 capable of x-forwarding ? - this is enabled on our system, but
doesn't seem to be working.
 what permissions should I check to be sure standard users can access
the system in this way.  The fact that rsh & rexec
 are
 rejected by the host makes me suspect I may not have permissions set
properly. - I can't login via xwin32 as su to
 compare.  My company had our hosting provider install and configure
this system. They really screwed up the ftp config -
 so I don't expect they did any better here.
 if ssh1 won't allow me to use gnome or x-windows , what's involved in
configuring telnet. I'd enabled this in inetd.conf
 recently , but can't login.
 any advice , or leads on resources in this area would be great
 thanks
BeOS can read the .wav files directly from any music CD.
(at least the CD:s i have tried)
I have BeOS installed, (besides Linux of course :) ), and it is very
handy, just copy and past any song you want from the CD to the
harddrive. Is there any drivers/apps for Linux that could do the
same thing the same easy to use way?
We did it with a 2.2.16-4.lfs.
To reserve 2 GB for kernel pages (including pagecache and
buffer cache), you must add CONFIG_2GB=y in .config
We tested also CONFIG_3GB=y, but due to a bug (described in
http://humbolt.geo.uu.nl/Linux-MM/more_than_1GB.html) the kernel pages
didn't exceed 2GB.
Well your disk setup is pretty much like mine, except for the Windows
stuff tacked on the end of the disk. A good question though about the
boot disk - I have no idea, but I would probably say no since I have the redhat
2.4.0-test6 rpms running at home,  and this was after installing their
default 2.2.16-22 kernel/system. All I did was install the rpms, rebuild
the kernel, fiddle with lilo to point to it and that was it. The boot
disk is the same that was made with redhat 6.2 (if not earlier!).
Very confusing. Today I'll try and install the 2.4.0 kernel without
reconfiguring it (i.e. with all the defaults enabled) and see if that
boots.
Subject: Problem printing with HP 2100TN
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: 26 Oct 2000 11:29:45 +0100
Hello everybody,
I am having a problem printing from Linux with our HP2100TN
printer. It used to work from time to time, but not always
and now it stopped to work at all.
Usually it helped to restart the printer daemon lpd in order
to restart printing, but now even that does not help.
Our setup is as follows: The printer has its own IP number
and ethernet adapter. There are a couple of  Macs talking
directly to the printer. Then we have some Windows clients
which talk to our central Linux server which forwards the
printing requests via lpd.
This works fine for our old Apple Laserwriter 16/600. But
somehow not for the HP.
Using lpc you see that there are jobs queued, which will
eventually disappear to nirvana, but nothing happens on the
printer side.
Is it maybe a problem with the firmware of the printer, it
runs this JetDirect software from HP?
Second questions, how would I connect the Windows clients
directly to the printer, I have not found any dialog box
where I can specify the IP number of the printer (as with
the Macs), I can only add a path like e.g.
//linux-server/lp.
I am getting kind of desperate with people coming and asking
"hey, the printer does not work again..."
So thank you very much for any help,
yours, Tobias
