I am wondering if it is possible to allow certain
users
to install only rpm packages, without giving them
a general root access.

If not, are there other solutions to mimic this ?

Hi.
I've read all the documentation on GNU process accounting.
I turn on the bin from /etc/rc.d/rc.local
The kernel I'm using has process accounting enabled.
/var/log/pacct exists.

There's is no activity.
Nothing writes to /var/log/pacct

Has anyone out there in Linux land used this bin and if so would you drop
me a line or follow this up please?
Thanks,
Adam

. . . - - - . . .
SOS!

I am having serious problems compiling 2.4.0 preview 9.
I am using the last version of gcc, and the assembler
is saying that the assembly code produced by gcc after
it compiles either fs/binfmt_about.c or fs/binfmt_elf.c
has invalid 386 instructions.

The instructions are
  movl %ecx,%fs ; movl %ecx,%gs
if I recall correctly.

Also I'm not out of memory, I've got 32megs of it.

And though I am compiling for the 486, I tried taking
out the -m486 switch but the problem still occurred.

I guess my main question is, should I be using egcs instead?
I was told a few years ago that egcs cannot be used for
kernel compiles. When I did "make bzdisk" it ran gcc.

Another (minor) problem: a headerfile called modversions.h
is missing. I did "touch" to create it, after that all OK.

Thanks
zeyr

  I have a full 3-CD copy of Linux M------- (mental block - I forget
the name) 7.x(?) coming this weekend. I hope to try the installation
then, too, if I have time.
My system is an AMD K6-2/400, 3.2gig HD with around 1 gig free, 64
megs RAM, an internal IDE 40x CD-ROM, external HP 7200e burner
(parallel port), HP OfficeJet 700, HP ScanJet 4s (serial port), USB
Intel PC Camera, NewComm 56kifxC voice/data/FAX modem running Windows
98.
I would like to dual boot, until I can transition my Windows apps to
their Linux counterparts. Any advice or suggestions before I take the
plunge would be appreciated.
  TIA...

Apparently, kernel.org is down today for maintenance
(http://www.lib.uaa.alaska.edu/linux-kernel/archive/2000-Week-43/0496.html).
Try a mirror at (e.g.) ftp.us.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2 .

"preview"?!  I guess you mean "2.4.0-test9".  (Although test10-pre{1,2,3,5}
seem to be preferred as the flavor of the week ...)

If you are using a version calling itself "2.96 (experimental)" or "2.97
(experimental)", then it may be that the kernel has not yet adapted to the
newest (unreleased) compilers. (On the other hand, note that if you are
using 2.7.2.*, that is not considered new enough anymore.)

Also, recent versions of gcc are built with knowledge of the instructions
supported by particular assemblers. You need to be sure that your gcc was
not built to go with an assembler newer than the one you have installed.

IIRC, the label information is included in the .iso image. I've always just
burned 'em with cdrecord, never specifying extra label info, and have never had
any problems. I'm not even sure you can specify a label when burning an existing
iso.

Thanks for your suggestion. I tried the Xconfigurator command in
superuser mode but it was not recognized. How do I install my video card
manually? I was guessing that when my hard drive was formatted to make
room for Linux that some driver or other info that Linux needed to work
with my video card and monitor was deleted also. Does anybody know if
this is a possible cause of my problem? If so, how do I go about
installing the driver or files that Linux needs? Once again, any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Rob,

Thanks for the advice.

I had activated the vmware-toolbox, but didn't realise it had an option
to sync the clocks. I'd only used it to (dis)connect the CD-ROM and
floppy drives, so that I could access them in Win2K.

I've tried out the time option and it works, and so does the sound
card!! Wonderful!

Every day a little bit of 'newbie' get rubbed away, but I think it will
quite a while before I can throw away the label...

I've even managed to suss out how to read the Win2K C-drive from within
Linux, but, for some strange reason, it only works when I login as
'root'!? Although I think I can live with that.

How does it go now: 'Every silver lining has a cloud' ?

Thanks again.............Phil

There's lesstiff for linux, instead of motif. Thats free.
There's 'real' Motiff available for non-business use. Thats free.
There's ViewKit, a C++ framework for creating Motif applications. Thats
free. (http://www.viewkit.com/)

The only thing thats not free, however, is CDE. Depending on how badly you
need it, you can buy a CDE implementation for Linux. I saw a CDE
implementation at http://www.xig.com for about 99 US dollars. Thats not too
bad, now is it?

Hey all-

I'm working at a small, Windows-based company which is generating a
rapidly-growing mailing list. Up until now, I've been getting by on
Eudora but our list recently ballooned to 45,000 e-mail addresses.
I've researched mailing list managers and I've found that most of them
(Majordomo, ListServ) run best on a Linux or Unix OS. We don't have
the budget to hire a professional mailing list service...some of them
can run $500 a month. Majordomo is shareware, so that's probably my
pick of the moment.

I know that installing Linux can be a daunting task, but I'm prepared
to get through it if it's the only platform I can operate my mailing
list on. Do you think it's worth the trouble? Do any of you see any
other way around it?

Thanks!

Run x86config from the command line. You need to know the vertical and
horizontal freqs of your monitor, and the make of your video card.

Then reboot and run startx. If that doesn't fix it, how old is your
monitor?

Subject: whole directories just disappeared

Hi,

I experience a strange problem with one of our Linux clusters - whole
directories just disappeared. The first time it happened after an outage
when /usr directories of all eight nodes of the cluster disappeared. The
logs of this eight nodes showed their last record at exactly the same
time - very early in the morning, the time of the outage. The second
case, when all files from the /scratch directory of one node disappeared
but the directory tree was preserved, happened after rebooting.
Recently there was one more similar accident with another node on the
same cluster. There were no indications in the log files that something
wrong was going on at that time, except that nfs. I wonder is somebody
else around has ever experienced similar problem?

Here is the background:
Beowulf cluster of Supermicro/P6DBE motherboards, SMP, PIII/600. The OS
is Linux/RedHat6.0. Each node is running PBS and MPI and has a local
/scratch disk. All scratch disks are mutually cross mounted with nfs.
Let me say also that we have another Supermicro/P6DME cluster and have
never had any problem with it.

I am not sure which newsgroups should I address this problem but I will
highly appreciate any hint that may point us to the cause of this
strange behavior.

Thanks in advance,
Ted

Well http://www.kernel.org works for me. BTW, you never
did state what NIC you had and what you did to configure
it. Is NIC support a module? What does your /etc/modules.conf
look like? Considering you use RH, did you install the
kernel-header rpm? If yes, you should copy the /usr/src/-
linux/configs/kernel-<uname -r>.config to /usr/src/linux
before doing make [menu|x]config.

I don't do SCSI, so I can't help you there.

Hi,
there's an article that describes your problem + gives troubleshooting
tips (English language):
http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/kgw_lilo_errmsg.html

Whenever you have changed your lilo config, you must run "lilo" on the
command line to a) activate the changes, and b) see if it returns error
messages. This way you can avoid your booting troubles.

Chances are your internal modem won't run
Your Zip drive however will most likely run, according to
"http://cdb.suse.de/cdb_english.html"

You should however be somewhat more precise. I just found 3 (!) different
types of 250MB Zip drives.
