Subject: mountinf a VFAT drive
Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 08:04:28 GMT
Hi,
I'm trying to mount a VFAT drive and be able to give all users of my
system access to this drive. The fact is that this drive is mounted rw
only for the root user and i'm unable to chmod the mount directory to
grant access. How can I accomplish that it is possible to all users to
write to the mounted drive ?
Thanks in advance,
Eric

Hi everyone!
I have a few problems with SuSE 7.0.
1. When I installed it configured my SoundBlaster Live. And it worked
well. After I compiled kernel myself I can't load modules for SB Live.
It gives:
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/snd.o: unresolved symbol unregister_sound_dsp
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/snd.o: unresolved symbol isa_dma_bridge_buggy
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/snd.o: unresolved symbol register_sound_dsp
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/snd.o: unresolved symbol
unregister_sound_special
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/snd.o: unresolved symbol register_sound_special
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/snd.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/snd.o
failed
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/snd.o: insmod snd-emu10k1 failed
I compiled the kernel using make menuconfig, make dep clean bzImage,
modules, modules_install. I believe SuSE 7.0 uses ALSA drivers for SB
Live. But how to configure them? YaST1/2 can't do it. This happens if I
boot with my original kernel too.
2. I can't print with my HP Laserjet 6L. I have configured priter using
Yast2. It prints if I put something directly into /dev/lp0 but it won't
work with lpr. Problem seems to be that nothing goes to spooler. All
worked fine with OpenLinux2.3.
If anyone can help please do so. I give more information if needed.
Thank you.

supply a umask=000 option when you mount the drive.

Dear Andrea!
Everything is possible!!!
But... i have installed some FW-1 on RedHat 6.2, but on a fast machine like
PII/400 or better.
It may cause a lot of performance-problems, if you try to install CP FW-1
(&VPN) on a 486DX! Put it on a faster machine!

I just recently installed XFree86 4.0.1 via tag.gz files since I am unable
to usr the rpms (I have RH6.2 and rpm only works for v3).
During installation I replied "n" to replace config files. Install went ok,
but gave problems such as running xf86cfg gives error:
Widget work has zero length and/or height? and it aborts!.
Install again but reply "y" to replace all config files. Installation went
ok and I edited XF86Config to correct for mouse and the fontpaths.
On reboot, it got even worse - now gnome will not run -
xsm runs instead and gives me the equivalent of Win98 "safe-mode" - How can
I fix this? What configs need to be corrected?
There are lots of funny files at /root such as .twm7YtvIJ .xsmOICgve
.xsuY978p .prxrJXYvc lots and lots....

Subject: Re: Yamaha sound Card
I've tried to get ALSA to work with my Yamaha card and although
everything compiles fine and the modules load w/o error the sound
playback is terrible with ALSA. I just got the new drivers and they
don't make a difference, version 0.5.9d. On ALSA's site under the bug
list my problem is listed. The problem is sound files repeat every
split second and it makes the playback unbearable to listen to. Many
people have stated this problem on the alsa site dating back to July
however I found no hint that anyone was working on the problem. So
although ALSA does support the card and although you will get sound from
it it won't be very good sound.

Usually Apache will give a line number where the error is within
httpd.conf. Make sure the error message u are receiving doesn't provide
this. If not then just go through httpd.conf and look at the php
sections to find any possible typos.

This is why you should keep your old kernel in your lilo.conf in case
the new one won't boot. Obviously u must not have compiled in
everything you needed or things would be working.
hdparm i doubt has anything to do with how the kernel is compiled but i
could be wrong.

Thanks guys! I couldn't get this to work until I realised that I should
have been booting differently. At the 'LILO boot:' prompt, I entered
'linux single', and was then able to run through the list of commands
without problems. I assume that this was the 'right' thing to do?
Now, if I could only consolidate the free space on /dev/hdc7 into
/dev/hdc5. As you correctly surmised, hdc6 _is_ swap, so it looks like
I'll have to play around with parted (don't have PartionMagic and can't
get it cheaply). Can I get parted from ww.gnu.org?

To add hdc7 to hdc5 you must first remove hdc6.
Since this is swapspace follow the next steps:
Run your system in console mode, so your swap isn't likely getting used
(best to boot linux single again, it is good for this)
1) swapoff /dev/hdc6
2) remove /dev/hdc6 and /dev/hdc7 (fdisk or parted) and
use parted to enlarge /dev/hdc5
(leave some room for a new swap-space on the disc too)
3) create hdc6 with the use of fdisk (make it a swappartition (ID 82))
4) mkswap /dev/hdc6
5) swapon /dev/hdc6
That's it.
Parted can indeed be found on www.gnu.org

Hi,
i have got my nfs working between two of my PCs.
My setup is as follows:
Both PCs running redhat 7.0
One PC is setup as a nfs server and the other is the client.
Now on my client i can mount the shared directory with out any problems. I
can copy files from server to the client, but i cannot copy files from
client to ther server. When i try copying files to the server to the client,
it gives me and error message saying permission denied.
Now i now that in my /etc/exports file i have given the rw(read/write)
access.
how can i share my cdrom drive on my server using nfs, that is what is the
line i need to add in my exports files, so that i access cdrom from my
client..?
thanks allot

You need to use the 'kgcc' compiler rather than just 'gcc'. Edit the
top-level (/usr/src/linux) Makefile - there are 2 lines near the top that
specify gcc - change these to kgcc and then try rebuilding the kernel.

See now I've kind of sorted this out...
I attached the HD to IDE1 and installed normally, then downloaded
kernel-2.4.0test9 and compiled it with built-in support for the HPT366
chipset. This has support for HPT370 integrated within. Then I changed lilo
to work with hde instead of hda (you will need to see how many other devices
are on your ide controllers, but hde should work:
IDE1:1=hda
IDE1:2=hdb
IDE2:1=hdc
IDE2:2=hdd
IDE3:1(HPT370)=hde
etc...)
When the drive was reattached to the HPT370, all was well. Now I just need
to sort out the Soundblaster Live to work for all users all the time. Only
root seems to have the ability to output to it intermittently. Must keep
trying though.

Normally I would now say forget trying to install the modem at all,

Open the ltinst script in an editor and change the line:
/sbin/insmod -v -f ltmodem
to:
/sbin/insmod -v -f -o /lib/modules/Your-kernel-here/net/ltmodem.o
i.e. explicitly state the whole path of the module.
Perhaps this will help.
