They use a 'font server', which is a separate process which listens at
that port. The font server uses a file /etc/X11/fs/config to show
where the fonts reside. If Xwindows can't start, it might be that the
font server is not running so enable it with '/etc/init.d/xfs restart'

Subject: Home user mail server setup
Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 23:26:46 -0400
Hi. This is my first attempt at configuring some sort of network (2
computers, 2 OS on each), and I'm having tons of problems. This is one
of them (probably the easiest).
What I'm trying to do is to setup some kind of mail server (RedHat 7).
These are my requirements:
1) I'm only going to use one account on my ISP's pop server, but with
two aliases. The server needs to be able to check the To: headers and
place the mail in the correct mailbox. I'm guessing that this will
probably done with a combination of fetchmail and procmail, but I really
don't know how.
2) The mail will stay on the server, in the mailboxes. The client
computer will read all his mail (new and old) from the server, and old
mail will not be removed from the server, so that the mail will be
accessible from the server and the client.
My question is simple: how do I do that? I've looked at thousands of
HOWTOs and FAQs, but I really couldn't find a way to bind all the
different programs together so that they do what I want them to do. If
you can point me to some info related to this case (which I couldn't
find) or simply hint me on how to do that, I'd be glad.
Thanks a lot!

Howdy-doo,
That gave me one word - "FAILED" in bright red <lol>
I placed a full copy of my log file at:
http://www.jonsplace.org/linux/XFree86.0.log
I will continue to read , as always, to learn about font servers,
but any help would be mightily appreciated.

Gene Heskett sends Greetings to Gene Heskett;
Yes, I know, its poor form to reply to ones own messages, but unforch
the first one, still quoted below, generated no reply.
I now have not been able to print for almost a week, and I've tried
every piece of magic I can download. For some reason. my /dev/printer
file-device had a fairly new date. one that might have corresponded with
trying to install CUPS maybe.
The CUPS docs talk about a make un-install, but its not implemented, so
I probably have CUPS junk all over the drive.
Anyway, I deleted it thinking that MAKEDEV could make me a new, correct
one. Fuhgedaboudit, it doesn't know how, and apparently neither do I.
I've played the 10,000 monkeys trying to regenerate it myself, and the
best I can do is to log a 'no permissions' entry in the appropriate
logfile, which then apparently causes lpd to delete the job from the
que, its gone in a second or so.
So, for starters, can anyone tell me how to make a new, RedHat 6.2
compatible "/dev/printer"?

All this is still valid. I've just spent 2 hours online reading all the
printing HOW-TO's I could find, not one of which actually gets its
fingers dirty in the required devices and paths departments, they all
assume a 'perfect' install.
Cheers, Gene

I am sorry, I obviously did not express myselff correctly. No, I am not
talking about a webserver nor any other specific application. My situation is
like this: I will be assigned two ip addresses by my provider and he expects
me to connect my two computers directly to the cable modem.
================= ================
| Cable modem | -------| 24.42.154.x1 |
================= | ================
|
| ----------------
--- | 24.42.155.x2 |
----------------
So the trafic for 24.42.154.x2 will be directed to the cable modem and not to
any other gateway.
But I would like to have the following situation:
================= ================
| Cable modem | -------| 24.42.154.x1 |
================= ================
|
|
----------------
| 24.42.155.x2 |
----------------
Here, 24.42.154.x1 is my linux box working as a router and firewall. But
anyhow, it must recognise the packets for 24.42.155.x2 and route it through
to my computer (24.42.155.x2), which is on the second ethernet interface of
24.42.154.x1. So, how can I convince 24.42.154.x1 to accept its own packets
and the packets for 24.42.155.x2 and route the second ones through to
24.42.155.x2.
And I am not only talking about one service! All the services must work
properly. From a 24.42.155.x2 point of view you should not be able to tell,
if it is hidden behind a firewall or not! (Well, except for the things, my
firewall is supposed to block!)
By the way, the two ip addresses don't have to be on the same subnet, as I
was told. They can have different net addresses.
I hope, I made my problem more understandable with the above drawings.
Any help is very much appreciated!
Victor

Got it.
FontPath needed 2 lines
Gotta say though, that Linux and even Xwindows documentation desperately
needs someone to do for it what I did for people with congestive heart
failure with The Manual at http://www.jonsplace.org/CHFinfo.htm - pages
writtten in layman's terms to lead people gradually and without such
frustration to a knowledge of how to COPE WITH or actually USE Linux instead
of assuming you are a computer geek to start with who knows how to recompile
this or that and already knows how to use the command line like a pro.
If I can create and maintain a web site like mine with only self-taught
know-how about HTML, CSS and JS, and do it all from a text editor, surely I
should be able to pick up Linux more quickly than this.
Can anyone point me to such pages? Regardless, I'm in for the long haul with
Linux from necessity, since I have to learn how to set up and run my own
server and more on a Total Disability pension. Just had to say all that once
to get it off my chest ;-)

Subject: Passing arguments to kernel at boot
Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 05:05:09 GMT
I am presently running RH 7.0 on an Athlon 950 system using an ASUS A7V
motherboard. Linux resides on an ATA-33 HD on the primary controller
and Windoze is on an ATA-100 HD on the secondary IDE controller. In
order to load linux I have to use a boot disc which contains an
/etc/lilo.conf file. In order for Linux to access the Windoze disc (and
files) I need to pass te following argument at bootup:
boot: linux x86_serial_nr=1 ide2=0x8400,0x8402 ide3=0x7800,0x7402.
I have tried placing an append statement in just about every position
within the /etc/lilo.conf file on the floppy disc but have had no
success. There is also a lilo.conf file in /etc on the root partition
but this is not acessed until after the floppy boot has finished.
Can anyone tell me how to pass this argument to the kernel without
typing it in at every boot?
Thanks

Hi I was having many problems trying to get Linux hooked up with my DSL
net connection. I'm running Turbolinux workstation 6.0 and haven't been
successful despite the many things I've tried. I have been trying to
configure turbonetcfg but I can't even get the eth0 to be detected.
-My ISP is running a Dynamic IP type server so I should choose DHCP?
-What IP, nameserver etc.. values should I put then into the turbonetcfg
program?
-I have my gateway IP, should I get more IP numbers, which ones? I'm
running windows 98, should I obtain the correct info through "winipcfg"?
-HOW do I get my network card to be detected? The network diagnostic shows
it fails to detect. How do I go about installing the correct modules? What
commands?
-And lastly, what do I do with the lo? This also doesn't work right now
either. I'm also running on a LAN if that matters.
Some detailed steps on doing this would be greatly appreciated as I have
been using turbolinux offline for the past months, so basically I have been
using windows :(. Ideally steps that could show me how to get the correct
info from windows and how to use them to get Linux to work would be the most
useful. Thanks for any help. I really want to use Linux instead of windows
right now but this bites not being able to use the net...

Hello,
I have a 486DX2-66 with 8mb ram and a 250mb hdd. I have installed
Redhat 5.0 because it is relatively small to install.
I "borrowed" the IDE cdrom from my other machine to do the install, and
all
went well.
The problem started when I removed the cdrom, the kernel would no longer
boot, it seems to fall over when it cannot find the cdrom.
Is there a configuration option somewhere where I can tell my system to
not
look for the cdrom (second ide device anyway)?
By the way I have removed any reference of the cdrom from /etc/fstab and
that
still did not make a difference.
Perhaps it is a Redhat 5.0 specific problem, might try Redhat 5.2?
Thanks
Jason
