I was reading a post on one of the linux newsgroups about the USB zip
drive and it quoted this
"give up and just wait until december when 2.4 is out"
I would like to say to you this, if we just all gave up and leaned on
the developers of the 2.4 kernel to make stuff work, then why the hell
are we even trying...exactly, because the above quote is NOT the
solution. I could just go fucking back to windows because I know the
drive will work there...but I don't want to...I want to learn how to
make it work in Linux...that is the whole point of Linux. Now, having
said that...I really do need help and unfortunately I am not getting
many replies. I have
Microtec Internation USB Zip drive w/ USB to 25-pin SCSI
has anyone a clue which kernel version and how I would make this thing
work since when I try to mount
/dev/sda4
it says, "kernel does not recognize this as a block device"
There must be a way to make this thing work...I am willing to try!!1

I have a Samsung QL7000 laser printer which has networking capability built
into it. The printer comes with utilities to install it on a variety of Unix
systems (BSD, System V, HP, SUN OS 5, and so on). They compile and run OK, but
after installation the printer is not accessible. I can ping it, but not print
to it. This may be because the installation thinks the system is using BSD for
spooling while it is in fact using LPRNG. Has anyone successfully installed one
of these on a Caldera system and, if so, can you tell me how you did it. Any
suggestions on places to start (short of RTFM because it ain't in the FM) would
be greatly appreciated.

It's a problem that originates from Linux's default inability to see the
other IDE chipset (promise) on the mobo. I wrote some instructions and
put them at
www.geocities.com/ender7007/index.html
but these are for RH6.2. I have tried to get it (the promise
controller) to work with Mandrake but could not find a way. I think it
is because they use a different loader (grub) instead of lilo, but I'm
not sure.
Goot luck.

Try to ping the Linux IP address. Do you have a hosts file in the
Windows subdirectory of the two Win boxes with the IP addresses of all
the machines? Do you have an /etc/hosts file with the same content?
If so, you should be able to ping the machine name as well.
How about the IP addresses? Are you using the non-routable ones?

Samba is the software which makes the Linux resources available to a
NetBEUI network. It should probably come with the Caldera distro and
have some kind of HOWTO or you can get info on how it works by going to
www.samba.org. That's where I'm going as soon as I get my 2nd linux box
up -- the first one is a tad too flakey and I am about to make my NT
server shut down for the last time. Woo Hoo.

I want to restrict the access to the users only to his/her home

Is it something with the /etc/ftpaccess? what should I change?

That should be the same info you need to type into the
MS win "Internet connection" program, e.g. phone num,
DCHP or static ip. You could copy it from a MS Win box
if you want.

My linux system automatically connects whenever I request packets from
outside my private net, I don't even need to click on an icon, just
start browsing. Just activate the "dial on demand" feature of pppd.
Hope this helps

Here's what I did when that happened to me:
1. As root, create a new user, e.g., tester
2. copy the .kde folder from tester to the .kde folder under the
corrupted user.
That fixed things for me, hope it does for you.

If it's a kernel thing then ..
(A) You can lean on the developers of the 2.4 kernel to make it work.
(B) You can become a kernel developer yourself and let others lean on
you to make it work.
(C) You could just go fucking back to windows.

Can't help either since I've got an Iomega SCSI drive which works
fine and, using ext2fs only anyway it runs on /dev/sdc1 (yes, I felt
free to ignore that "must be /dev/...4" stuff).

Try the latest development version perhaps or get you a decent ZIP
drive. I'm used to SCSI devices just working though so my judgment
may quite well be wrong regarding their SCSI (emulation).

Try either this ...
make ... 2>&1 | tee /tmp/make.out
... or that ...
script /tmp/script.out
make ...
^D
... but it'll write ^M's too so ...
tr -d "\015" < /tmp/script.out > /tmp/make.out

The 2>&1 | tee thing is going to work with the (ba)sh and ksh while other
shells may have a slightly different syntax.

Yep, you can't just use random machines as mail servers; they need to
have an MX record in the DNS. Also, many people will reject mail coming
from what looks like a dial-up IP address, because spammers often send
mail this way. It's better to use your ISP's facilities, and a local
mail server will let you set up a "smarthost" pointing to your ISP where
outgoing mail can go.

Subject: Troubble installing RAID1

Hello,
I have problems configuring some RAID1 device - I hope someone can
help me with that problem:
I am using Suse Linux 7.0 and the partition table looks like:
Disk /dev/sda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1115 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 14 77 514080 82 Linux swap
/dev/sda3 78 339 2104515 83 Linux
/dev/sda4 340 1115 6233220 83 Linux
I have created following raid-configuration in /etc/raidtab:
raiddev /dev/md0
raid-level 1
nr-raid-disks 2
nr-spare-disks 0
chunk-size 4
persistent-superblock 1
device /dev/sda3
raid-disk 0
device /dev/sdb3
raid-disk 1
After this, I have tried the following command:
# mkraid /dev/md0
handling MD device /dev/md0
analyzing super-block
disk 0: /dev/sda3, 2104515kB, raid superblock at 2104448kB
disk 1: /dev/sdb3, 2104515kB, raid superblock at 2104448kB
mkraid: aborted, see the syslog and /proc/mdstat for potential clues.
You can see that ugly result above? Syslog contains ... NOTHING and
/proc/mdstat looks like
# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [1 linear] [2 raid0] [3 raid1] [4 raid5]
read_ahead 120 sectors
md0 : inactive
md1 : inactive
md2 : inactive
md3 : inactive
What is wrong here? has someone experiences with RAID & Suse??
Thanks a lot for any help/hint!

Hmmm, I had good luck just installing Xfree86 4.0.1 right over the
default RH 6.2 install. With the binaries, I just answered [y] when
prompted, or went with the defaults.
Also, I had good luck install XFree 4.0.1 from the sources right

to generate a new X86Config file, that's all.

Ehem, I AM sorry, YOU ARE 100% CORRECT. Looking a little further
in the fdisk man page I found this:
<snip>
There are several *fdisk programs around. Each has its
problems and strengths. Try them in the order cfdisk,
fdisk, sfdisk. (Indeed, cfdisk is a beautiful program
that has strict requirements on the partition tables it
accepts, and produces high quality partition tables. Use
it if you can. fdisk is a buggy program that does fuzzy
things - usually it happens to produce reasonable results.
<snip>
which led me to the cfdisk (v2.10f) man page which says:
<snip>
Write partition table to disk (must enter an upper
case W). Since this might destroy data on the
disk, you must either confirm or deny the write by
entering `yes' or `no'. If you enter `yes', cfdisk
will write the partition table to disk and the tell
the kernel to re-read the partition table from the
disk. The re-reading of the partition table works
is most cases, but I have seen it fail. Don't
panic. It will be correct after you reboot the
system. In all cases, I still recommend rebooting
the system--just to be safe.
<snip>
Thank you for the accurate information :)
Always reboot after using fdisk/cfdisk, oh well I thought
that was one more way linux beat MS OS's, I guess NOT.

Thats great news. Did you install the binaries via tar.gz files? I managed
to install it also, but the gnome and Xwindows wont run properly as it
replaces all config files. Can you advise which are the important files that
must be edited for it to work properly? I only edited the
/etc/X11/XF86Config and /etc/X11/fs/config files.
BTW did you also install the optional tar.gz files (I did).
Also, how do you "fool" of fix Linux RH6.2 so that when you install other
apps/rps that require XFree 4.0.1 recognises that it is installed. Since the
other posting told me that installing via binaries will not update the RPM
installed version number.
Thanks

if you don;t want to wipe out your windows...which i suggest you keep.
you should use a utility such as partition magic (or linux usually has the
fips utility on the cd)
for example if your disk has just a c: drive you will need to also create a
D: drive which will be reserved for linux (and the D designation wiped out)
if you use dos fdisk to do it...it will destroy all your data... that is why
i suggested partition magic.
once you get to the linux install...it will further partition...
but be sure you do not wipe out your windows C: partition.

I'm not sure about the error you get, but on my RedHat 6.1 box, I use "fetchpop", a
far simpler and lighter alternative to fetchmail. It pulls my mail into
/var/spool/mail/ed, and I use Pine to retrieve it. Pine appends it to the file
/home/ed/mbox . I then can use regular SMTP direct from Pine. Mutt can fetch from
POP servers itself, but relies on Sendmail to relay out. Netscape can be set up to
read from your /var/spool/mail directory, but I found it clumsy. Also, my linuxconf
insisted on resetting the permissions that had to be changed for Netscape's sake.
