So, it will install itself on the D: drive, then remove the "D:" so I
can't access it by way of typing "D:" [for instance]??????

How big should the Linux partition (D: drive) be? Is 400 or 500 megs
big enough? Will it take only 100 megs? Do I need to free up more
than the 1 gig I have left and make it a gig?
Sorry for the stupid, seemingly repetitive questions, Philo, but I'm
just trying to get a clear understanding of what's needed. Linux is a
little different animal than WinDUHs/DOS - thank God!

What mail daemon are you planning on using?
For sendmail:
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/howto/RH-sendmail-HOWTO/book1.html
For postfix:

I think one of those should help. BTW, you're probably interested in

Don't ;-)
I decided three years ago when I was happily plugging along with a
386/25 and Win95, to install a copy of RH 5 and see just what this Linux
stuff was all about.
Now today, with an AMD K-6 2/550 3D, 160 meg ram, 16 meg video, 19 in
monitor, triple booted with that other OS, an install of Deb 2.2 and a
souped up RH 6.1 w/2.4-test9 kernel XF86 4.01, and just finished a six
hour compile and installation of KDE2 and can only sleep about three
hours at a time before I wake up shaking with Linux withdrawals.
But then your experience could differ and your mileage may vary. ;-)

I finally managed to install XFree 4.0.1 bin viar tag.gz (not rpms) and the
NVidia NVIDIA_GLX-0.9-5???.rpm and NVIDIA_kernel-0.9-5.???.rpm - the latest
from NVidia.
The Xfree 4.0.1 somehow complains lots about my XF86Config file which is
working perfectly nicely with XFree 3.?? until I upgraded to 4.0.1 I have
commented out the LeftAlt, RightAlt etc META defs but the problem appers to
be in the Device Section.
Previously (under XFree 3.xx) the DEvice Section:
Device "Generic VGA Card"
etc....etc. does not need a "Driver " entry. As per FAQ (NVidia) I edited
in "nv" as the driver and thats the best I can do for now. But RH6.2 boots
up and keep flashing at the login screen (the screen just before it clears
and popups the Gnome GUI login screen). The whole setup works fine under
XFree 3.xx.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I downloaded the tarballs and put them in
/usr/local/sound From there I compiled the driver utils and libs, e.g. I went
into /usr /local/sound/alsa-driver-0.5.9d. After compiling utils drivers and
libs I went back into /usr/local/sound/alsa-driver-0.5.9d and typed
./sndconfig
So what is it I have done wrong? Any ideas?
Cheers,

I'm installing RH6.1 on an old Intergraph TD-4 workstation.
It's a P5-100 with 128MB RAM and 4GB SCSI disk.
Everything works _except_ X-windows.
Every time I try to either probe or start X, the system locks up solid
and needs a cold boot.
I've tried 5 different graphics cards using chipsets from Matrox, Orchid,
Tseng, and S3 with the same results every time. Using a different PCI
slot doesn't eliminate the lockups either.
I now believe it must be a setting in CMOS that is causing the lockup,
but I have no idea what to look for or to change. I don't like making
random changes, or trial-and-error troubleshooting.
Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
(Win95 and NT4 install and run fine so I KNOW the hardware is okay.)

Before doing anything, I made tarballs of the default RH 6.2 Xfree
installation, specifically /etc/X11 and /usr/X11R6. This way, I
could revert back to the old installation if something went wrong.
The first time around, I installed XFree4.01 via the binary tarballs
using the install script. When prompted, I just accepted the
default answers. I had to generate a new XF86Config file and then I
cleaned-out all old gnome config files in my home dir (rm -r
.gnome*). Everything worked fine. The install scripts seemed smart
enough not to step on anything vital.
After awhile, I realized I needed a patch to the DGA mouse code to
make Quake3 work correctly, so I d/l the XFree4.01 source, did some
changes and installed it by doing a "make install". I believe I
might have used the tarballs I made to revert to the default XFree
installation, but I did make sure to save my new XF86Config file.
In any event, everything is working fine.

You are right, the RPM database isn't updated. This hasn't been a
problem for me; I can't recall installing any rpm files that require
XFree4.01. I tried to uninstall the old XFree RPM's- believe me,
this is a nightmare. The tarball method is much better.
After the XFree4.01 installation, I upgraded to helix-gnome using
their installer (recommended) and that went without a hitch. The
only problem with my current system is that I'm unable to compile
programs that use 3-D, somewhere between XFree4.01 and the voodoo I
needed to perform to get my GeForce 2 working, that was broken.
Games like Quake3 work fine, I just can't compile them (QuakeForge).

Subject: Re: XFree86 font path questions
Date: 28 Oct 2000 16:23:22 GMT
That's a lot of cross-posting you had. Anyway, reading the Xwindows documentation
is actually the rather long way of doing it. There are two resources (actually
one) you can use: The linux documentation project. LDP. Have a search around for
it. Most probably if you installed everything, you would have a slightly outdated
copy of everything under your /usr/doc directory, witch a name like
"Linux-HOWTO", "LDP", or something like that.
As for your actual question. The way Redhat and some recent distributions uses a
font server (and external program) to supply font shapes to the X server on
request, instead of just reading disc files like you listed it. So the font path
is either "hostname:portnumber" to contact the font server (may be another
machine, but it is basically a network connection to the local machine if you
want to think of it that way) like what you had, or you just dump all your
local font path in there like this, one line per directory:
localhost/:7100
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local
I think it is probably "localhost" to say "this machine", and what you had
("unix") was wrong, but since I don't use font servers myself, I am not sure.
It is okay not to use a font server and just list all the directories like the
above. People say it doesn't look as good, but it works for me and I had always
had it set up that way in the pre-font-server era and I don't mind
it that much.

Does it still boot? I would recommend getting Partition Magic 5.0 (also

You can get "parted" which is on the RH7.0 CD to repartition your system.

Dear Linux Setup NG,
I have a new PCMCIA ethernet card. Everything about the card and
network installation seems fine, except identifying the card.
The probe at the end of my "netconfig" on Slackware7 does not find it.
When the card is inserted or "crdctl insert" is run, the beeps are HIGH
then LOW. (From the HOWTO, this indicates an inidentified card).
On boot I get: "eth0 - unknown interface no such device"
I do not completelyunderstand the modules listed output from "lsmod"
but the relevant bits seem to be:
pcnet_cs 10512 0 (unused)
8390 6272 0 [pcnet_cs]
ds 6256 2 [pcnet_cs]
tcic 6688 2
pcmcia_core 43296 0 [pcnet_cs ds tcic]
Will it be good enough to find the ioaddress? Reading "net-
modules.txt" seems to indicate it will be the critical step.
THANKS!
