What serial port is the modem set for?
In linux /dev/ttyS00 == DOS COM1, /dev/ttyS01 == DOS COM2, etc...

To make a quick check of the serial ports that were registered with
the linux kernel at boot time (as root) type:

[root@zephyr]# grep tty /var/log/dmesg
ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
[root@zephyr]#

If the modem's port is not listed in the output there may be a
hardware conflict, e.g. IO port or IRQ in use by another device.

Subject: Gtk problem

Hi.
I have recently upgraded my GTK+ and GLIB libraries to version 1.2.8
After setting them up and getting the new version of glade working again
I encountered problems.

When I try and run any GTK based program (including Glade, Pan and
Spruce) I get the following error message:

Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate loadable module in module_path:
"libpixmap.so",

This appears about 14 times.

This however does not occur when I run these programs as root. But
whilst as root I do get this error message:

GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols
specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

Whilst in my normal account and in root mode I always get this error
message:

GnomeUI-WARNING **: Could not open help topics file NULL

The program always seems to run, but it is a little worrying getting this
many error messages.

If any one could help I would be very thankful,
Cheers,
Jimbo

When running kde2 after downloading it,
unpacking, i get a message just
after I try to start kde2 (with
WINDOWMANAGER=kde2 startx) that kde
can't open or find the shared object library
"libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3"

Where do I get that?

I am running SuSE Linux 6.3. The kde2 beta I am

Thank You,

Cosmo:

Certainly the place to start would be to running isapnp tools,
enter when logged in as root: pnpdump -c > /etc/isapnp.conf

Then look at ISA pnp.conf file. Reboot and your card should be
recognized by the your system. Try opening kppp and using the "Query
modem" and you should get the modem strings displayed.

Next step, if you can't get your modem to work would be to post the
pnp.conf file in the massage to this news group.

I am using an internal Diamond SupraExpress 56i Sp PC modem, and I did
end up having to change the modem to use fixed com setting using jumper
switches on the modem. Also, there is a PC diagnostics program called
windows, you can go to the control panel and find out what resources are
being used by your different cards, that can help with getting linux
set-up

You know I've got exactly the same problem with my cd-rw. It's an ide
one, so I'm using the scsi-emulation. I also have an ide dvd drive on
the same channel using the same emulation, which works fine...

Now I've found that when i try to play some mp3's off said cd-rw I get
the above problem. GMC will mount the disc fine, give me a nice dir
listing, but when I try to play a file (with xmms), it plays the first
couple of secs, then goes into fits of greater and greater
unresponsiveness. And the above errors fill any terminal (outside x).
Sometimes I can't even reboot the thing as it gives up trying to unmount
stuff.

However if outside of X, I mount the drive and play a file with mpg123
off the command line, it works fine...

I've only recently started haven't this trouble, since I've installed
the new kernel 2.4.0-test9... I'm running Xfree86 4.0.1. I also have 2
other cd drive hanging off an aha1505 board, they work fine...

I've replaced the ide cable, as I first thought that was to blame, but
still to no avail...

Regards,

Arthur Yarwood.

I had sort of the same problem when installing an older application on
Redhat 7. The trick is to make a symbolic pointer called, in your case,
"libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3" that points to the actual standard C library
installed.

Do a "find . -name libstdc*" from / to locate the actual library
installed and create the pointer.

comp.os.linux.xxxxx - we are here, just ask.
And there are groups of Linux users in almost every country and region.
And groups relating to distributions as the administration changes a
little between them.
But a book on administering a Unix/Linux box, NOT related to any
particular distribution will be worth its price.
Have fun.

The other modules load fine - it's just NVdriver that won't load

Did this modem work under a previous Linux distribution (or RH version)? If
this is the first time you are trying to get it to work under Linux, you
should verify that what you have is not a Winmodem (see
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html for a list). I suspect that your
modem might be, and if it is you might be out of luck. Finding this out
first will save you alot of wasted effort (trust me!).

You've picked a fairly difficult path for a "new to Linux" person. I'd
probably have upgraded with RedHat packages for XFree 3.3.6. RH 6.0 was
way back there. You need five rpm's to upgrade: XFree86-3.3.6,
XFree86-libs,
XFree86-75dpi, XFree86-SVGA, and XFree86-xfs. Download those (or find
them
on a RH 6.2 cd), and do a rpm -Uv.

I'd probably be able to do it the way you've started, but I've been
using Linux
for years. As long as you've chosen RH, why not use rpm. It's about
the only
reason to use RedHat.

What's the point of booting off from the flash drive if you have a hard
disk installed? Just dual boot a regular linux distro off the hard disk.
The version of Netscape on the Scovery's flash drive is out of date and
other than that all you have on the machine that is of any use is the
ash shell.

Remove the 16MB flash drive and use it to build a LRP router.
