    Hi, the way that I did it was to go to the BIOS and have it change which
drive boots up as "C:" drive. The drive that had Linux on it booted to the
autoexec.bat which started LILO.

486/66? Good heavens. I wish I could find more of those nice little machines!

I have an old machine that I use as a print server and NIS server. The
second-oldest machine is a file server. Heck, if you throw in a big hard drive,
you could fill it with MP3s and serve music to your entire home. <g>

Back when Linux was new (pre-1.0), I was developing on a 386-40MHz with 8MB RAM
running X. I was using FVWM (the old one, not the Windows-looking one. *ick*) It
worked fine, but when I was able to finagle a total of 16MB it was heaven. I did a
huge data conversion for a large client using Perl and a little C. I didn't have
much disk space, so I figured out how to NFS mount another machine's HD for
storing data. I got sassy and started running xearth in the background. I
eventually got a slower 486/33 with 20MB RAM, which was even better.

I think the key to X is to not load it down with a big window manager. twm is also
a smaller window manager that others in the company liked. Also, reduce your
expectations on responsiveness. <g>

A client I worked with a few years ago had an extra P-60, which I used for
developing and testing programs, along with serving files with Samba.

I have dual flat screens as well. Matrox offers a beta drivers for G200

I am running RH 6.2. As my system boots up I see a list of services
starting up and updating their status to [OK] as it rolls up the screen.
However, I get the following error on the httpd services:

httpd: Cannot determine local host name
Use the ServerName directive to set it manually

I have my system connected to the Internet with a Cable modem with a network

        Uhm, in a word, "RedHat." The more I look, the more problems I find.
At the present, I can't find the following on my install/source CDs:

Linux libc6 C Library 2.0.7pre6 ; ls -l /lib/libc*
        Can't tell if it's there. Can't find it on the CD.
Procinfo              16        ; procinfo -v
        Can't find it on the CD.
Autofs                3.1.3     ; automount --version
        (Possibly) found but not installed yet.
NFS                   2.2beta40 ; showmount --version
        Can't find it on the CD.
Ncpfs                 2.2.0     ; ncpmount -v
        Can't find it on the CD.
isdn4k-utils          v3.1beta7 ; isdnctrl 2>&1|grep version
        Can't find it on the CD.

        I'm seriously thinking about switching to Debian and hoping their
distros supply what's needed. I bought the CDs so I wouldn't *have* to
search online. Guess it was too much to ask for... <grins> I wonder if
there's a distro out there that includes everything you need to recompile
the entire distro from scratch...on CD.

Here is an example what is going on with your cdrom.

# mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom         # cd is mounted
#  cd /mnt/cdrom
# # do stuff with the cdrom
# cd / # make sure you are not in the cdrom at all or else you cannot unmount
# umount /mnt/cdrom # un mount your cdrom, you can eject your CDROM manually
and put in a new cdrom.
# mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom  # mount your new CDROM

Give up :) and follow below:

I got my redhat 6.2 to use my CD-Writer.
.
$ su -
password: <scret>
# cp /etc/conf.modules /etc/conf.modules.bak
# vi /etc/conf.modules

Modify conf.modules for your CDROM writer, my CDROM is located at /dev/hdc

Here is my conf.modules

alias scd0 sr_mod
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
options ide-cd ignore=hdc

# cp /etc/rc.d/rc.local  /etc/rc.d/rc.local.bak
# vi  /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Put this at the end of the rc.local
# load ide-scsi module
insmod ide-scsi

# cp /etc/lilo.conf /etc/lilo.conf.bak
# vi /etc/lilo.conf

put the append statement for /etc/lilo.conf your cdrom
'append="hdX=ide-scsi"' and run lilo.
Here is /etc/lilo.conf, my CDROM is located at /dev/hdc

boot=/dev/fd0
timeout=100
message=/boot/message
prompt
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-6.1.1
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hda4
        append="hdc=ide-scsi"
        read-only

# /sbin/lilo

Now relink the /dev/cdrom to your scsi emulation of your cdwriter

# mv /dev/cdrom /dev/cdrom.bak
# ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom

Reboot. (I don't know how to restart with new conf.modules and rc.local
in linux :( )

Run dmesg to see if your scsi emulation is working after the reboot

# dmesg

Are you planning on installing off the cdset of debian 2.2? There are a
number of ways to do this. I often just do the 5 floppy diskette install
and then let apt-get run for awhile updating and installing. I also have
done the iso images and they worked quite well. The diskette version of
the install may not give you everything off the bat. You may need to get
things like bin86 and ncurses using apt-get install sessions.

As a normal rule of thumb, I tend to spend 20 minutes or so installing
debian and then about 8 hours of freewheeling apt-gets to get my system
running the way I want it. It may be longer before I decide to recompile
a kernel but I don't do debian kernels so I always just do my own.

copy all data from D: to C:
put the mandrake disc in the CDROM-drive.
reboot
remove partitions on (hdb/hdc depends on your setup, but it must be the
15G disc) but don't touch hda (=the 20G disc)!

No more to it.
(well there are some catches, I would install lilo in the MBR and always
keep a linux bootdisc handy, cause it's probably the easiest solution.
Just make sure that before you reinstall/upgrade win98, you have a
working bootfloppy)

boot to linux from a bootfloppy (you should have made this during the
installation!)
or use the installation CD and boot linux root=/dev/hdaXXXX)

Don't you run fsck, or whatever program defrags in Linux, by giving it a
partition to work with? If so, then by having the kernel in /boot it
shouldn't be touched since you didn't tell the defrag program to touch
that partition. However, if it runs like MS's defrag it will take teh
whole disk at once if I'm not mistaken, which in that case it would
touch the /boot partition, if it were ran on a Linux disk.

boot with a rescue disk , get to a prompt, and type 'lilo' at the prompt
to put LILO back into the MBR
don't let Norton tell you you have a boot sector virus when most likely
it is just LILO, or at least don't let it fix it for you until you
verify it. U can put LILO on diskif you want. I've never done this so
you will need to read up on how to do it or ask for more help in this
area.
