I don't call myself an expert but I'm no newbie. I tried 7.0 too and had
several difficulties with it. The kernel issue is simple to solve by
using kgcc and a "standard" 2.2.16 kernel (I had problems with the
RedHat 2.2.16-22 and kgcc). Have you tried to compile a KDE 1.x/Qt 1.4x
program with the supplied C++ libraries and compiler ? All programs I
tried gave me an error in qregion.h where a non ansi "defined" is used
according to g++. If you could help me out of this problem I could
switch to 7.0. No need to mention that the programs compiled ok on 6.x !
Thanks in advance,
Torsten

I have tried unsuccessfully to install the drivers for the 3dfx Voodoo3
2000 AGP. I have dl 'ed the various files from the 3dfx website and
tried to follow the instructions. How do I get the 3dfx-SVGA to show
up as a choice when running xf86config?? Any other tips and hints are
appreciated!
BTW, I am running Redhat 6.2 and have 800x600 resolution and what
appears to be 256 colors but I think if configured correctly, I can get
much better color.

I have just installed Linux-Mandrake 6.1 on my Compaq Presario 1200. All went
well until the install was complete. I can log in as root, but when I type
startx, I get a Fatal Server Error: no screens found. I'm having problems
telling Linux what my monitor is since it's a notebook and doesn't offer
Presario monitors as an option during setup. Can anyone help?

Did you try the generic vga X server? Try that and then run Xconfigurator.

You'd better find out why it takes so long for ppp to start (or why it
fails)
Some services may need the previous to be started, how can you guarantee
that if you start some in the background. Besides you cannot even check
easily which service failed, if you start them in the background.

Good point. I guess what I'm saying is that machines in that are built by
Compaq, when put up against machines in the same "generation", seem to me
to be much noisier. That's a combo of Dell, IBM desktop and no-name machines
against several stages of Compaq Deskpro (5166 thrru EN currently shipping).
On the other hand, the beasts tend to run forever. I have a 5166 that's
been running Slackware 3.6 non-stop for more than a year. Yeah, that's without
a reboot. Woo-hoo! (My Compaq server, running NT 4.0 (not my choice) has been
up for 150 days, so that's cool too)

You can centralize user admin of Linux boxes using NIS
If you want NT and Linux to work from the same centralized user base,
you could install NisGina (NISGINA.DLL) on your NT boxen so that they
also authenticate from NIS.

I just upgraded an old RH5.2 box to 6.2, and now when I try to login,
it clears the screen as soon as I enter the user name and hit enter.
(and immediately presents me with the LOGIN prompt again.)It never
offers me the chance to enter a password. 'Linux single' works fine,
but I can't find the problem. I have looked at /etc/passwd, /groups,
shadow, all looks happy. I suspect this may be a pam thing, but I have
never touched pam, and don't want to make her mad. (It was supposed to
be a joke, no, a pun)
Any help is appreciated, Comments on my bad humor will be considered
strongly. Spam sent to my email address will be read in it's entirety
and sent to spamcop for consideration by ROBS and RBL.

Try setting your From: address to a resolvable domain name; e.g.,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Most e-mail clients can also send messages
with the Reply-to: field filled in, but in reality, not all e-mail
clients recognize them upon receipt. The actual process depends on
your e-mail client, and the recipient's MUA spam-blockers, as well as
his/her e-mail client, eventually. If that is unacceptable, then
perhaps the receiver's admin can add an exception to the spam trap so
that e-mails aren't refused.

Yes. A lot of programs depend on "localhost" for their basic TCP
interfaces. In addition, if you're running into problems with spam
blockers now, you almost certainly will in the future with an
unregisetered domain name. On recent systems, you should be able to
set the host and domain in /etc/sysconfig/network, and in
/etc/HOSTNAME on older systems. The latter is only present on the
newer systems as a backward compatibility hack.

Subject: hardisk problem
Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2000 14:27:34 +0100
Hi
I just bought a 20,4 GB Maxtor harddisk for use as my secondary disk. On my
primary I'm running WinME on a AMD T-bird Athlon 700 MHz, using a Asus A7V
m-board.
Now I was looking really forward to getting Linux running on my PC, but when
I try to boot, the boot output is:
hda: no response (status=0xa1),resetting disk
hda: no response(status=0xa1).
and the exact same message for hdb.
This is probably the reason why I can't use Disk Druid nor fdisk.
But both drives a accesible from Windows.
What am I doing wrong??
Thanks alot

Subject: Help ! More than one SCSI controler...
Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2000 13:36:23 +0000
I'm putting together a system in an Alpha CPU box.
This has two native 50 pin NCR 810 SCSI controllers which are recognised
by the SRM system firmware.
I have managed to load and subsequently reboot Linux with both of these
installed. So far, so good !
Now, I want to add a wide controller for some new disks, so I rearranged
two of my other systems to free up an Adaptec 2940UW.
The 2940 is not recognised by the SRM firmware, but I can still
>>>boot dkb0
and Linux starts from one of the disks on one of the NCR 810
controllers.
During the boot, Linux finds the 2940 and starts the drives that are
connected to it which is good, but the 2940 is now SCSI0, and when it
tries to mount /dev/sda1 as root, the system panics and hangs because by
the look of it, sda1 is now the first drive on the 2940 controller
rather than the first drive on one of the NCR 810 controllers.
I've heard it said that the PCI slot determines the order in which SCSI
controllers are used so I swapped the NCR 810 and the 2940, but that
made no difference.
Any idea what else I could try so that the 2940 doesn't get to be
SCSI0 ? Any other workarounds I can try ?
Cheers, J/.
