Haven't compiled anything on RH7 yet apart from the 2.4 test
kernels. And I only installed KDE 2.0. I never did put on
KDE 1.x.

Have you considered using LOADLIN instead of lilo?

My suggestion,

use first partition for WIN2k, let WIN2k do the booting
and use loadlin to start linux out of WIN2K's boot menu.

Of course purists might disagree, but if you can't get round Win2k
this is quite a painless way.(You needn't touch the MBR of your
harddisk.)

There are some benefits with braindead PnP hardware, too.

Conclusion:

try installing the harddisk as NORMAL in the BIOS if you haven't
already. If the 10G disk (still:) contains valueable data be sure to
backup first, as (IIRC) DATA of a formerly LBA installed disk is lost
when installed as NORMAL.

Then see if LILO works, or if LOADLIN is an option for you.
(if there is another M$ OS on the same disk LOADLIN is my personal
favorite)

I'm currently using an MSDOS6 200MB Disk as primary master to boot linux
of 10 and 20GB disks. ( although I've managed to get LILO booting of
other than the primary master disk, this way I can use
Creative Labs proprietary DOS initialisation software and thus build a
monolithic kernel)

I recompiled the kernel for my RedHat 6.2 installation and changed the
lilo.conf file to point to this new kernel as well as the existing kernel
(so on boot up I have 3 options - linux - dos - newlinux -) when I choose
the new linux option the following error apears:

                no setup signature found.....
and the bootup stops so ctrl+alt+del has to be used to restart.

I recompiled the kernel to install the module ne.o for my realtek 8019 LAN
adapter and I am desperate for a solution to this problem.

If you could please send any help direct to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks

The "NT OS Loader + Linux mini-HOTWO" describes how to install Linux
after NT (same as Win2K in this regard), with NT using NTFS, keeping the
NT loader on the MBR, and installing lilo on the Linux boot or root
partition.

Some in this newsgroup have described how, instead, to put lilo on the
MBR.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of the two methods? Which do you
recommend, and why?

How 'bout this:
Without 2940, boot linux. edit fstab so it doesn't use sda anymore.
power down, insert 2940, reboot.

Hello,

I have just been given a Linux Red Hat 6.2 server to support, and from
playing around, noticed that some files/directories are displayed in various
colours, i.e. red, bule, green etc !

Why is this? How/Can I change this? and where ?

Thanks in advance.

But maybe the root dir is on hda3 and fstab tells, it's on hda2 - that's
what I meant.
This doesn't depend on whether your partitions are detected correctly.

Which data is on which device? The whole linux on hda1? or /boot on hda1
and windows on hda2, linux-root on hda5?

As far as I know, you can use LILO in the MBR as long as NT is installed
on one partition.
The actual NT bootloader will then be installed in the partition's
bootsector. Then LILO can be used in a chain setup, linking to the NT
bootloader. But whatever setup you will choose, you will always need
both bootloaders. Most documents describe the NT bootloader in the MBR,
but I know for sure that LILO can go there too (my system is setup that
way). This may however not be always possible, I don't know much about
the NT bootloader, so I don't know in what situation (if any) it must be
located in the MBR.

This looks to be an MTA configuration problem. Are you using sendmail?
If using command line mail like this, sendmail does all the header
writing. A lot of clients (pine, mutt, NS, etc), can handle a lot of
this. So anyway assuming sendmail, in /etc/sendmail.cf try adjusting
these lines near the top:

# my official domain name
# ... define this only if sendmail cannot automatically determine your domain
#Dj$w.Foo.COM
Djfeenix.eyep.net

# "Smart" relay host (may be null)
## hb
DSmail1.mco.bellsouth.net

The 'Dj' should be some legit, resolvable name. I use my dynamic DNS,
but you can put your ISP here or whatever. This may take care of the
localhost.localdomain thingie. The 'DS' is the relay. Not sure of the
particulars of your domain, and how your ISP works, but it is good idea
to use your ISP as a relay, though may not be necessary.

These are the two 'gotchas' I run into with sendmail.

Sounds like you haven't updated the modem to V.90?

I acquired an old 133 Pentium box on which I installed Linux. It
came with a 56K USR internal modem (non-win). It only connected at
28.8 or there abouts. (The original owner of the computer thought
the modem was broken, etc., etc.) I just went to the USR web site,
downloaded their Upgrade Wizard software (unfortunately, only runs
under Windows 9x), and it updated the modem's EPROM. It now connects
routinely at 52000. And the upgrade was FREE!

Is this 32 disks in one box? Is the box set up to use LUNs? That
might be one way around it. Another is to use more than 1 SCSI card.

When the NIC card are brought up with the ifconfig command add the option "mtu
1492" The ifconfig commands are usually run when you go into a run level that
brings up the network. Check the scripts in /sbin/init.d or /etc/init.d.

may work for you. There may be a lower value that is better if you have a
network behind the cable modem. I can't rember what that value is.

Boot to single user mode (optional, but avoids the long wait).
cd /etc/rc.d/rc3.d (assuming runlevel 3)
mv S*network Kxxnetwork (where *=xx)

This will disable network services.

Also, look in /etc/sysconfig/network and turn NETWORKING="true" to
"false" (or "yes" to "no").
