Make sure you get the correct config file, if your are running XF86R6.4,
the file you need to look at is XF86Config-4.

Are you sure startx, starts the correct version of X?, IIRC startx under
Mandrake 7.1 starts XF86R6.3, hence +xinerama wont work.

Gordon,

It is 32 disks in one storage disk array.
Yes the box is set up to use LUNs.
I thought that even if you used more than one Host Bus Adaptor you are
still limitted to the devices for SCSI disks
/dev/sda, /dev/sdb,..., /dev/sdo,/dev/sdp.

Is this correct?

How safe is it to update the bios?

I have an asus cuv4x which is not as stable as i would like. I think it gets
confused by 2 cd-roms (one regular, one cd-r). Every time I open "my
computer" in windows the dialogue window opens with the little flashlight
icon swirling around forever but it doesn't seem to find the drives (c:) and
2 cd rom drives. Then it sorta freezes up.

I don't have these problems in linux (dual boot) and am trying to figure out
if it is software or hardware. Also, when I run norton disk doctor (win) it
often finds "incorrect free space information" in the disk. Is this normal?
Or have I screwed something up in creating the linux partition?

Also, the dreaded soundblaster live crackling keeps happening (in windows
only). I was hoping a bios update might fix some of these problems. I have
never done one before and was wondering what I am getting into if I try
it....

I have the latest 4-in1 drivers installed.

Thanks for help, suggestions, commentary.....

Whew!

I installed the ide patch for my 2.2.17 kernel, then re-enabled the -X66
-d1 hdparm options... and YIKES!

  # hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

  /dev/hda:
   Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.80 seconds =160.00 MB/sec
   Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 2.31 seconds = 27.71 MB/sec

!!!

That's compared to a measly 3 MB/sec before I started messing with
hdparm, and a best of about 7 MB/sec without the IDE patch!

Holy smokin' drives, Batman!

Thanks for the help, all.

Unfortunately, I was trying to modify the kernel to accept my IDE CD-RW drive as
a SCSI drive so I *could* make backups when this happened. :)

I'm not sure about your mobo, but I think a BIOS is a BIOS. Before you flash
your BIOS, make sure you go into BIOS and set it to the 'default' values.
Once you do the flash, turn on your PC and again set it to the 'defaults',
reboot and then you can modify your BIOS to your likeing. Most of the CUSL2
users who don't follow that simple precedure, wind up with problems. Just
follow the process in the manual verbatium and you should be OK. I have
successfully flashed the CUSL2 BIOS twice with no problems.

I have /sbin/mk_initrd. When I run it, it says this:

using "/dev/hda6" as root device (mounted on "/")
creating initrd "//boot/initrd" for kernel "//boot/vmlinuz" (2.2.17)
no version "2.2.17" modules found

I did specify some things as modules when I compiled the kernel. I did make
modules and make modules_install also. When I run mk_initrd, there is no file
called "initrd" created anywhere on my system.

No man entry for either mkinitrd or mk_initrd.

/sbin/lilo tells me this:

open /boot/boot.b: No such file or directory

man lilo says that boot.b is the boot sector? I thought that would be in
/dev/hda, not in a file in /boot.

It sounds like I need to wait until I get home and use the kernel source module
from my installation CD... oh well.

Thanks.

Okay, I'm not all that stupid but we simply can't get our apache web

We've tried almost everything on setting permissions to allow access to
the other directories (user's web directories). Can someone please
give me a break down for Red Hat 7.0. I've seen almost everything for

stuff around... kinda figured our way around that, but it's still not
working. We get the default page to come up, but that's it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Greetings!

Running RH 6.x on a laptop and trying to network it using a 'Fiberline'
ethernet pc card which Windows identifies as 'PCMCIA Fast Ethernet Card'
produced by PC Card Services Products. Atelco, a German firm, seems to
favor them.

I can get Linux to beep on recognizing the card and some driver modules
are installed but it's not really initializing the card. Any tips on how
to conjure it into life?

Win98 works with it fine and allows me to connect to my desktop (Mandrake
7) but no luck in Linux (not to mention OS/2!); I'd appreciate insights.

I've managed to install LILO on the MBR with my SuSE 7.0 Linux installation
on a Dell Laptop.
The laptop was pre-installed with Windows 2000 (primary partition formatted
as NTFS5)
and LILO (hitting the tab key during the start of the booting stage)
presents three options to boot into
'suse', 'linux' and 'nt' (=Win2K). This is my first foray into Linux but I'm

That the trouble with Linux Mandrake and Redhat. Dunno what happens to them

Linux Mandrake and Redhat got something like rpmfetch or something? I don't

Subject: Re: Win2K NTFS + Linux dual boot: LILO where?
Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 01:12:44 -0000

Hi Murray,

I also wanted to dual-boot between Win2K and a linux distribution (SuSE 7.0
in my case) on a laptop.
I made the relevant Linux partitions under Windows 2000 using PowerQuest's
PartitionMagic 6.0.
In my case, I've prepared the following partitions under Win 2K and the
/boot partition is ensured to
fall below the 1024cyl limitation (8Gb). Previously I created the partitions
during SuSE's guided installation
stage but when I rebooted back into Windows, PartitionMagic flag errors on
all those SuSE created partitions.
So I opted to define the size of the Linux partitions under Windows first
and format them as Ext2fs, Swap or ReiserFS
under the guided installation of SuSE.
Here is the format of my hard drive (~18Gb),

Win2K (NTFS5) (6Gb) - solely Win2K, but I discovered I can access this
partition under Linux when I logged in as 'root' (???)
swap (128Mb) - suggested by a HowTo doc
/boot (16Mb) - suggested by magazine and a HowTo doc
/ (1.5Gb)
/usr (1.4Gb)
/home (900Mb)
FAT32 Partition 1 (1Gb) - Win2K/Linux access
FAT32 Partition 2 (6Gb) - Win2K/Linux access

I've attempted two installations, first installing LILO on to floppy to make
sure that my Linux installation was stable on my machine.
Booting Linux from floppy worked fine.
Next, I reinstalled SuSE again on the very same partitions, but this time
when presented with the menu suggesting where to put LILO, I
plumped for it to be installed onto the MBR. This worked out OK and I can
boot into either Win2K or Linux (the
default is Linux, but I suspect you can configure this).

It does seem easy but I did had some minor annoyances along the way, i.e.,
SuSE's installation software "crashed" after rebooting when
LILO has been installed. A manual reboot brought back the next stage in the
installation process (LILO worked!) and everything
from there was OK barring any unsupported hardware hiccups under Linux (i.e.
WinModems, blah blah).

I hope your installation goes smoothly.

Andy (Linux newbie)

Reasonably safe as long as the process isn't interrupted, most
updaters give you the option to save your old BIOS in case the new one
royally screws things up.

This is more likely caused by the VIA 4-in-1 drivers.

Have you tried the standard Win98 VIA drivers, I use them without
problems. I also use an SBLive (for soundfonts) along with my
pro-audio card.

 I think it's normal for Win95/98 systems... WinME & W2000 fix this
problem with large drives.

Is the Crackling related to hard disk access?

There's a small utility that changes the pre-fetch (something like
that) in VIA chipsets. It has helped many get rid of the crackling for
good.

I'm sure someone here has the URL or FTP address, if not I'll look it
up.
