Hi there,
it works but with some problem. I was able start X on both monitors but
found that my mouse pointer can not go to screen DISPLAY:1. In short words
I can start application on second screen but I can not get access into
that window by mouse. To run it in this mode I had to download from
http://www.matrox.com website a new driver (id doesn't work with driver
which goes with XFree-4.0.1) an compile it. If you are interested in
config file fill free to email me.

Would performance be acceptable with RH, FW-1 on a Pentium 133? Two
interfaces, both at 10Mb/s? Clearly a 486 isn't up to stateful
inspection, but depening on the ruleset, I'd have to think a P133 is
up to the task.
Anyone have a datpoint to offer?

Mount your Windows partitions as fstype 'vfat'; this permits Linux to
recognize the MSwindows long filenames. 'msdos' is for MSDOS
filesystems, which (by definition) do not support long filenames
natively.

I did something stupid, mistyped a command, and deleted everything in my /boot
directory. I don't have a backup. I'm running SuSE 6.4.
I don't know what's supposed to go in this directory, but I've looked in
/etc/lilo.conf and it references:
/boot/message, which I know I can do without
/boot/initrd
/boot/vmlinuz
I know vmlinuz is the kernel; is a spare copy stashed anywhere when you
recompile the kernel?
What's the initrd file, and is there usually a spare copy of that around?

No.
The safest, best, works everywhere all the time answer to this
penultimate FAQ is:
$ rm ./-
The slightly less portable, probably works on all systems produced in
the last 5-8 years or so but won't work on older systems (for some value
of "older") answer is:
$ rm -- -
Go see the comp.unix.shell FAQ--as I said above, this about the F'st FAQ

Hi:
Redhat newbie back again with a new problem I can't seem to get around.
I have a 233 Pentium running Redhat 6.2 . I have a laserjet 6 connected
to the parallel printer port (3bc). If I boot the box with DOS, I can
print ascii text to the printer with no problem. This tells me the
hardware and cabling is functional.
Next, I boot linux. In linux's /dev directory, I see devices lp0, lp1,
and lp2. I have tried this:
ls > lp0
to try to print a directory to the printer. The system reports back that
it can't find the device. I have repeated the experiment with lp1 and
lp2. Always, the system reports it can't find the device. Is there a
driver missing? Let's see...
I tried lsmod, and it reports that lp is installed. Now what?
Any tips appreciated. Thanks!

That was the crux of it, and I think this also solves my other question:
> > How do I put Windows 2000 with NTFS on hda2 without blowing away LILO?
Since, obvously, Win2K won't be able to touch a pre-existing ext2-formatted
partition on hda1 after I "set the partition ID to a linux one". I will try
to figure out how to do this on my own.
If you're still wondering why I would want to install four different flavors
of Linux, here's the explanation (past the obvious reason that I don't know
in advance which one I will like best):
I have used Unix and Slackware and Red Hat before a little, but need to
become productive as a developer on Linux/Unix platforms for a job overseas.
So I wanted to set up a dev machine that will be easy to use with different
packages, and to be able to understand any subtle differences between some
major flavors of Linux which might be obstacles to learning how to
efficiently use those packages. For example, one book suggests Mandrake,
while some interesting libraries such as MTL seem like they might be easier
to use in something even closer to GNU like Debian. That's my Linux-novice
thinking, anyway.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: DON'T REBOOT YET!! Sorry for the shouting
I had to get that point across. You will need to reinstall the
kernel again. This should be on the cdrom I am assuming you got
your distribution from. The message file is not that important,
so put some funky text in it. Initrd is an image file needed to
load stuff for ppl using scsi. If you don't use scsi devices
forget about it. If you do then you need to create one. Man
mkinitrd will show you how to create one. You will also need
a module-info file. I am a RedHatter so this is in my kernel
rpm. Lastly, you need the System.map file which is also in
the kernel rpm. If you compiled your kernel then you should
still have a copy of your kernel image and the System.map file.
Copy them over. When you have restored the /boot dir, run
lilo after making sure it is fine.
Wish you luck....

He needs to reinstall lilo too. Some of its stuff is in /boot. Should be
good to go. I did the same thing once, and ran several days before I
noticed. I *did* have a backup.

You didn't say if you used rpm to upgrade the kernel, or if you use tarballs of
the _generic_ kernel. Kinda makes a difference, as RH does some funky things.
If you used tarballs, did you copy or move the bzImage when you recompiled? You
may still have one as /usr/src/linux/arch/<whatever architecture>/boot/bzImage
(assuming you did a "make bzImage" to compile it - or zImage if not IIRC) If
you're using rpms for the kernel its a different story, where reinstalling the
rpm should put it back.
> What's the initrd file, and is there usually a spare copy of that around?
chances are, if you're not booting off of a scsi disk, you don't need initrd. if
you do need it, have a look at "man mkinitrd" on how to build a new one.
You'll probably want to put a System.map in /boot too
(/usr/src/linux/System.map)
Redhat's kernel-headers rpm also adds /boot/kernel.h and the kernel rpm adds
/boot/module-info-<kernel version> and a symlink from it to /boot/module-info.
If so desired, you could use rpm2cpio
(http://www.linux.com/tuneup/database.phtml/Distribution/Red_Hat/001666.html)
to extract just those files from the rpms. Whether or not you even need the
latter files kinda depends on how modified your system is. If you use rpms to
upgrade the kernels, you'll probably need them.
Then modify /etc/lilo.conf as needed and run lilo. Running lilo should create
/boot/map which is referenced in lilo.conf, so don't sweat that one when you
see it mentioned there. If there were no errors from lilo, try rebooting (while
praying and keeping your fingers crossed)
Good luck...

I'm using my own kernel, compiled from vanilla Linux kernel 2.2.17
sources, with just the NFSv3 client and server patches applied.
I'll check out the udma patch; it looks like it's not being maintained
for 2.2 anymore after some 2.2.18pre release... does that mean it's
going to be folded into 2.2.x, or that I'll be SOL after that until 2.4
comes out?

Dear sirs,

when I download linux-2.4.0-test9.tar.gz from www.kernel.org and rebuild
the kernel, I choose "Enable loadable module support"to N . so that I don't
need to insmod any modules. I choose all the 3 modules to Y when I "make

Subject: load balancing under rh6.2
Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2000 15:50:23 -0600
Hi, I'm trying to get load balancing to go on my little gateway box
running rh 6.2 kernel 2.2.16-3. The idea is to give certain machines a
larger portion of the bandwidth than other machines. Anyway, I read that
aside from installing the package iproute (duh) I had to prepare the
kernel. I did try to run tc (one of the programs in iproute) before I
prepared the kernel and got errors. So, no way around it. The kernel has
switches for load balancing, so I selected them as modules, recompiled my
kernel, installed it and all the required modules, ran lilo and
rebooted. And ... nothing. The boot hangs at the point of figuring out
all the modules dependencies. Nothing beyond that. No prompt. Just a
completely dead machine. Lucky for me I still had an old 2.2.10 kernel
on the disc so I could fairly easily recover. But, I've compiled the
kernel many times before and never have I seen this behaviour. Does anyone
know a way around this problem? A golden tip is what I need ;-) Should I
have compiled the necessary module into the kernel?
TIA
Jaap
