Subject: "Mastering" a live audio CD under Linux
Date: Thu, 02 Nov 2000 01:20:37 -0500
Hey folks...
I want to take one large (60-70 minute) WAV file and put multiple
track breaks in it. I've been doing this by writing a TOC file for
CDRDAO that breaks this WAV into tracks. This is very time consuming,
however, and prone to errors (bad typing, etc). Is there a software
that makes this process easier?
Windows has CD WAVE, which does exactly what I want but, of course,
it's only for Windows and doesn't seem to make compatible CUE sheets
that CDRDAO can use. If there's not a Linux equivalent for CD WAVE,
is there a Windows program that can make CDRDAO compatible TOC/CUE
files? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

everything went smoothly, instead of installing lilo to the master hd i made a
linux boot floppy instead, and when i try to boot from the floppy, all i get is
10101010101010101... and it keeps scrolling that down the screen until i
restart my comp, i also had the same problem when i tried installing mandrake,
i installed lilo to the mbr and it also did the 101010101... can someone please

Upgraded RH6.2->RH7.0+updates but when you shut down a machine, it does
not automatically turn the power off any more. These are standard
uniprocessor Athlon PCs. Nothing cute or tricky here.
What gives?

Try passing the paramteres of your HDD to the kernel while booting (ie.
cyl/head/track)
for the syntax you will have to look at manpages/howto's (on the web)

You can always add a swapfile, but before you do this, do you really
need it?
I think 128M is already a lot of swap.

To find out if PPP is working properly you can try pinging the DNS server
(you should be able to get this from your ISP). If this works then it
would appear that PPP is working properly (which I suspect it is, as you
said it dials and connects OK). If this in deed the case all you simply
have to do is add the DNS IP to the nameserver section of the
/etc/resolv.conf file. There way be a nice graphical way of doing this,
but i'm unfamiliar with Corel Linux. Hope this helps. Unfortuntly I
don't know much about getting sound cards working.

Subject: Onstream DI30 I/O errors
Date: 2 Nov 2000 07:57:12 GMT
I just got an Onstream DI30 tape drive.
I went through, configured the kernel, built it, and everything seems
okay. On boot, the kernel realizes that the drive is there, and maps
it to /dev/ht0 (or so it seems).
When I do anything at all with the drive, I get I/O errors. If I do a
mt -f /dev/ht0 status
I get an I/O error. Same if I ask it to rewind. If I try to tar
anything, thus:
tar -cvvb 64 -f /dev/ht0 /etc
say, I get an I/O error as soon as I reach a point where it has to
write data to the disk.
I tried the drive and tapes out under windows. Everything seems okay
there.
Anybody have any ideas?

Hi,
Try giving RPM a boot up the backside by adding the --force option - it
should install it without complaint ;-)
rpm -Uvh --force esound-0.2.20-0.i386.rpm
I just checked my 'mirror' of RH7 updates and I have a slightly newer
version of the RPM for esound - namely esound-0.2.20-1.i386.rpm (file
date Oct 6). I suppose your problem could have been a packaging issue
perhaps.

Yo!
Thanks! How can I add a swap file?
Isn't it suggested that amount of swap space = amount of memory x 2 ?

look in your /var/log/named.log (or wherever it is) file to see if there
are any errors being detected (typos) in the named.conf file. This can
cause your error to appear.

I've read this too, and there are some reasons for this advise, but if
you have 128 M of ram, swap will not be used that frequently (depends on
your apps/usage)
you can add swap like this
dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=128
mkswap /swapfile
swapon /swapfile
Add a line to your fstab to use this space again when rebooted

No!
This rule or tradition comes to us from ancient times when memory was scarce
and the system had to have space to save the contents of volatile memory on disk
in case of crash. So the reasoning was equal space for memory swapping plus this
crash space.
On todays boxes you have more volatile memory than whole systems 20 years
ago in hard drives AND tape backups, so swap will be used very rarely and the
128M is enough for single user box.
If you have to administer multiuser network then you may need more swap, but
then you will know how to put it in place.
So do not worry, you are OK.
Have fun and enjoy Linux.
Stanislaw
