I am a newbie to Linux. I have a Dell Dimension XPS M200s with 64 megs of
RAM. It has a built in sound card. When I run sndconfig it detects a
creative sound card but comes up with the error message:
The following error occured during the Modprobe program:
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc/sb.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc/sb.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc/sb.o: failed
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc/sb.o: insmod sound-slot-0 failed
What do I have to do?

Do an rpm -qa | grep kgcc
If you don't have kgcc, you won't be able to compile a kernel properly in
Redhat 7. You also need to check your Makefile in /usr/src/linux to make
sure that it's compiling using the proper compiler. My version of the
Makefile was already patched so if you get the latest kernel source (which
I did for 2.2.17) you are OK.
Running the compile now and crossing my fingers...

Been running Reiser on my Root partition for about 3 months. My servers
been running Reiser for about 1 year on one of my partitions. I have
not had any problems. My buddy has a RAID 1 setup using ReiserFS and he
hasn't had any problems.
The only thing that has screwed me up on occassions is the lack of a bootdisk.
The is an incompatibility between 2.2 and 2.4 kernels. Reiserfs for 2.2
kernels can only hand version up to version 3.5 and 2.4 kernels can
handle up to 3.6. Now when I first formated my drive for Reiser I was
running a 2.4 kernel so it defaulted to making my partition ReiserFS
version 3.6. I brought my hard drive to my girlfriends house and needed
a bootdisk. My buddy gave me his bootdisk but it didn't work... I couldn't
figure out why. Then I realized he had a 2.2 kernel on his bootdisk. So his
disk wouldn't work cuz the 2.2 kernels can't read ReiserFS version 3.6
partitions.
Argh.. so I had to search the internet for a bootdisk running a 2.4
kernel with reiserfs support. There isn't too many.
My advice would be to format your reiserfs partition for version 3.5 of
reiserfs so you don't get into this problem.
As far as I know the only way you can do this is to install ReiserFS
Tools version 3.5 ...format the partition with mkeiserfs then you can
install the 3.6 tools. Thats if you are running a 2.4 kernel.
If you are running a 2.2 kernel then all I have said here.. doesn't
matter to you.
Anyway.. ohh ya .. there is a problem with lilo and reiserfs on the /boot
partition. You need lilo ... umm I am not sure the exact version but I am
using version lilo 21.6 and it works fine.

Subject: Problems installing SuSe 7.0 with big hard disk
I've just got SuSe Personal 7.0 and am trying to install it on the last 2GB of
my 60GB Maxtor HD.
The problems come when it's trying to create the Linux partitions, it says it
can't create the Swap partition (this is using YasT 2).
I've tried using YasT 1 but my swap partition (which is /dev/hda19 in my case)
seems to disappear... :(
I've been on to Technical Support and they suggested that it may not be
correctly identifying the geometry of my hard disk. They sent
me an email from the Support Database which says I should use:-
boot: linux hdx=ccccc,hhh,ss
when installing.
However, I tried this using the values for Cylinders, Heads and Sectors from my
Maxtor Diagnostic floppy but still had no success.
I'm a bit stuck now...:(
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...:)
Michael (linux newbie)
P.S.
=====
In the hdx=ccccc, hhh,ss command can the Cylinders parameter be more than 5
digits, II'm supposed to have 119,112 cylinders according
to diagnostics....

Apart from using the 'expert' mode install, there isn't much more you
can do other than try a different distribution.

Use the 'rdev' command to examine the kernel image; make sure it's
trying to boot the proper partition:
rdev /boot/linuximage-2.4.2
(and it should report the proper partition)

That'll work on most distributions, but if you're running a more
"secure" (read: pain) distribution like Debian then you'll need to use
xauth.

Yes, the shells can use the 'echo' command.

/etc/resolv.conf has the name server information
/etc/hosts has the static mappings

Both E and GNOME can set background images; it'll be a race to see
which one does it. I'd reccomend setting it in both.

Subject: TV-Ausgang bei ATI Radeon / Xfree86

Hallo,
Gre, Jrgen

You want the 3c59x module (using 'expert' installation)

If you want to connect them directly, you'll need to use a crossover
ethernet cable. It's possible that your cable modem uses such a beast
so it may just work (mine does -- but many don't).

One question....why do you have the server computer sitting between you and the
dialing computer? It should be ok, but does'n seem like the best thing.
your "server computer" must have forwarding enabled. echo 1 >
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
same with the "dialing computer"
I am assuming that you have a single (probably dynamic) IP......
your "dialing computer needs to have Masquerade enabled (there is a howto that
is easy to follow.)
Then....since what you have here is two networks instead of 1.....
Lets put your home network on the 192.168.0.0 network and your dial/server
connection the 192.168.1.0 network (you could subnet 1 class C network but I
never bother with it in these cases)
"dialing computer" eth0 -> 192.168.1.1 ppp0 -> assigned by ISP
-> "route add -net 192.168.0.0 netmask
255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.1.2"
"server computer" eth0 -> 192.168.0.1 eth1 -> 192.168.1.2
-> "route add default gw 192.168.1.1"
Home network eth0 -> 192.168.0.[2-254]
-> "route add default gw 192.168.0.1"
The diald setup is your thing...I have never done it.
As you can see though, having the server between you adds a level of
compexity....that is why I say it is probably not what you want. You should
now have an idea of what is needed to set this sort of thing up

hello,
i just changed from a rpm based sytem (suse) to debian. i wanted to
experiment with something else and especially the packaging system of
debian.
i got everything working good, exept one little thing. my X server is for
the moment working with the nv module (Diamond Viper 770, TNT2 based
card). I am using KDE 2.1.1 as window manager. my mouse is a logitech
wheelmouse (imps/2, /dev/psaux).
the thing is that my mouse hops all over my screen and is issuing button
clicks everywhere.
