Nope. It is a command-line only virus scanner. That means that you either
have to manually scan for viruses once in a while or set up a cron
job.

Yes, and, after you get that going your way, implement NTP. It's simple
to install, and will be the end of issues involving the right time on your
machine. <shameless plug> A page for configuring XNTPD is at

Hi,
Nevermind, I have solved the problem by adding to /etc/lilo.conf
append="mem=192M"
and then running /sbin/lilo to allow the kernel to use the additional
memory.

Build your kernel for accessing NTFS-partitions (mostly available as
read-only) and make sure the module is loaded if build as module. Should
work.

Subject: Best NIC for Red Hat 6.1 internet connection?
Date: Sun, 05 Nov 2000 13:58:31 GMT
I'm looking for a good NIC for my firewall, which runs on Red Hat 6.1.
I've tried several 3c509Bs. They work OK with the intranet connection, but
behave erratically with the cable modem connection to the internet. I've
reconfigured the cards, swapped them out, changed ports and IRQs with 3Com
software, etc, etc, but the result is always the same. The internet NIC
will work OK for a few weeks and then go out.
I've corresponded with several people who have had the same problem with the
3c509B. I need a NIC that I can configure, install, and then forget about.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Roy

Could anyone please advise on how to use cron jobs on the laptops? There
are a few cron jobs scheduled to run over night. It is OK for desktops

Is there any smart way to run those cron jobs other time? Maybe just

Hello,
Has anyone seen a weird flickering at the bottom of the screen (it is
where the GNOME tool bar is normally placed) while starting GNOME?
After a few seconds of flickering, the GNOME starts with icons on the
left side of the screen but there is nothing at the bottom where you
usually find a toolbar, clock, virtual desktop control pan, etc.
I am using Redhat 7.0 on Dell Inspiron 5000e notebook running X in
1400x1050 mode. Other X-window managers are running OK but GNOME...

the kernel does not have monitor drivers... unless if you are talking
about the frame buffer.
in the case of frame buffer, the kernel simply gives up if it cannot
find the frame buffer device.
All you need to do is reconfigure X. this can be done with any one of
the X configurator. (I know RH don't use XF86Setup, and I don't know
what RH actually choose to use.)

Thanks. Quick question though: if I set the linux drive to master, and
therefore presumably the win98 drive to slave, will I need to set lilo to
remap the drives in bios in order for windows to boot? If so, do you know
how to do that?

Please be more precise. I assume that you've ment that you can't get
the X-server to display anything useful on your monitor. Anything
else would be guessing.
Please give at least this info:
1. what video card (chipset)
2. what Xserver, what version
3. post full Xserver output
4. H- & V-sync figures of you monitor
(optional: 5. your /etc/XF86Config - you are using the XFree86 server,
are you?)

Subject: backups via NFS
Greetings!
Ok, I have my laptop and desktop linked via ethernet and nfs.
Part of the point of the exercise is to have a nice way to back up the
laptop and to restore it in case of catastrophe.
It's got three partitions: VFAT16 (Win98), HPFS (OS/2 Warp 4), RH 6.0,
coming to about 3G altogether.
What's the best way to pile this stuff onto my desktop for storage and
ease of recovery using nfs? I assume somehow tar and gzip but I'm not sure
what incantation. Remember, there's little free space on the laptop though
there's plenty of room on the desktop so any swapping or temp files have
to park on the desktop.
Also, rough estimate, how long might I expect this to take, say, to park a
1 Gig partition? The nfs connection is direct: cable from one computer to
the other.
I also need to consider my strategy for recovery: maybe a bootdisk which
can enable nfs?
Thanks!
F.

I don't believe in bibles.. depends on your hardware and how much you
wanna play with the machine, If you want the server to do exclusively
these things above and nothing more, I'd suggest a server to use
something like Slackware. This is simply because no distro will work
right our of the box with all these firewall features. i.e., you have
to read docs anyway. you can set it up, or ask someone to set it up
for you, and forget about it. For that purpose you don't need
KDE,gnome, or whatever. Not to say there's anything wrong with RH,
it's just not the appropriate tools for the task. Debian is also good
for the job but it's installation is discouraging. One good
alternative is OpenBSD. Its default is already like what a firewall
should be- very hostile. In my opinion, OpenBSD is much better a
firewall then any Linux distro. I don't know how tunneling is done in
obsd, you might wanna ask OBSD people how to do tunneling then.
All the documentation of these advanced networking subjects are found
on the net. go to linuxdoc.org and dig out the HOWTO's on these topic.
books usually don't cover them completely because these things change
a lot. if you insist buying a book, I'd suggest "Running Linux."
