I downloaded glibc-2.1.94-3.i386.rpm, an "errata" RPM from Red Hat.
One of the 9 fixes in there was _my_ fix.

Thank you very much for helping. Another problem that I forgot to mention
last time is that there is an error message saying 'modprobe: not an ELF
file' when I was booting. It keeps repeating an I have to press CTRL+C to
terminate this to continue booting. And when I try to bring up eth0 using
'ifup eth0', an error returns saying 'Delaying eth0 initialization'. How can
I solve this problem?

i just did this
install windows with only one drive in the system
then add the linux drive as master and install linux
set lilo to boot which ever one you want as the default
and any time you have to reinstall windows (every 60 days acording to
MS's recomendation) remove the linux drive and reinstall windows
this way you never have to rewrite lilo and you never loose your MBR

: -server has firewall
: -server has filter (XXX sites, etc.)
: -server shares Internet to multiple Win flavored clients

Linux can do all these, I have a server connected to the internet via
Cable Modem myself, with multiple clients (Win98SE, Linux, Win95), and
Linux 2.2.14+ and 2.3.67+ (I think?) can do filtering/firewalling.

Notice that 2.0 IP masquerading is IPWADM, 2.2 is IPChains, 2.4 is the
yet different IPTABLES, but they are basically versions of the same.

: -Win flavored clients must connect to VPN via the server/Internet(most

I will let more qualified individuals answer this. I don't know about
VPN at all. I vaguely understand that this is doable.

: ** Nice to have **
: -remote control of server from inside and outside the firewall
: -remote control of Win flavored clients behind the firewall
: -forbid one or more of the Win flavored clients access to Internet

For remote control, you can allow ssh (openssh2) into the firewall;
however, that extends to the firewall machine only, the idea with a
firewall is that anything behind it is not accessible. You need to
SLOGIN to the firewall machine and then use something like VNC (see
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/faq.html, VNC stands for virtual
network computing) to access the other machines.

: Comments and suggestions greatly appreciated. I saw a RH 6.1 bundled with a
: RH Linux Bible in the bookstore for $35. Is that a good place to start?

I would suggest something ... slightly more up to date such as Red Hat
6.2, with all the security patches (it's the most stable platform for
servers in the RPM fold) or Debian Slink (which is recommended if you
are not into RPMs). Don't put serious server machines on Red Hat 7.0.

Hi

I have add 128Mb RAM to my computer. Plus my original 64Mb, that would
make up to 196Mb RAM. The added memory could be detected and used in
Windows, but in Linux, although there seems to be an improvement in
performance (pretty significant when I run forte for java), the 128Mb of
additional memory could not be detected. The total memory of the system
is still 64Mb viewed with top or guname. What could be the problem? How
could I solve this?

My old 64Mb of memory is PC100, but the 128Mb is PC133. Could that be
the cause of the problem? Thanks in advance!

Nev
