Im installing mandrake 7.1 on an Asus CUSL2 Intel 815E Atx 733
motherboard. Using the Drakx install program, when I reach the partition
format proceedure, the system hangs or sometimes reboots on its own, usually
at the latterportion of the hard drive.

does anyone have any ideas?

start xvidtune from an xterm. when using xvidtune, press the Show button.
you'll see a modeline in your xterm. paste this modeline into your
XF86config and remove any other modelines in there that use the same
resolution.

There is also a utility with debian 2.2 for updating the file that
update-modules reads. Offhand, I think it's modconf (/usr/sbin/modconf),
but the name might be slightly different. Use this to try out all of the
modules you want to dynamically load, and add them to it's list of
loadable modules, and then rerun update-modules. The modules you are using
are from the same kernel version aren't they? The man mage for
update-modules may have some pointers, and the modconf manpage too.

Dan,
I had scsi trouble with a hp netserver II or some such. - an eisa bus
box

This has two scsi ports on board (I have one disk) and linux threatens
to use the same driver as yours
Now
Although my disk was detected the install was so slow as to be unusable
( conflicting hardware or driver unable to cope with to ports I thought)

sure enough when I disable the second scsi port with HP eisa utility -
all is well
I haven't solved the problem but then with only one disk there is no
urgency for me.

You could try this if you don't get a better answer and if it works for
you then let me know if you ever get it going with both ports

According to Jeff, you still need patches for RH 7.0 for vpn masq:
ftp://ftp.rubyriver.com/pub/jhardin/masquerade/ip_masq_vpn.html

ANd no, RH 7.0 doesn't come with modules such as ip_masq_ipsec.o already
compiled, you must compile them yourself

Read the LILO documentation.
Then, as the error suggests, I would remove the line that says LINEAR in
/etc/lilo.conf. Read about large hard disk support in the LILO
documentation first.
man lilo (for the lilo manual page)
Depending on your distribution, there should be a LILO-HOWTO or mini-HOWTO
around somewhere, and it will probably be at www.linuxdoc.org
(http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/LILO.html)
On Debian, look in /usr/share/doc/lilo

Hi folks,

I've burned copies of the Slackware 7.1 isos. Works great. But I don't
see a corresponding iso directory for the ./current (ie., updated 7.1
directory). I guess I could probably recursively ftp everything in
there ... but then how to burn an iso from that?

Perhaps ...

Dump the 7.1 iso into a directory. Overwrite specific contents with
that from ./current ... then remake the iso? That seems horribily
convoluted.

Thanks,

Sounds like a sample rate issue ... or 8bit vs 16bit. I'd suggest
getting a copy of the commercial OSS drivers. They really do make life

One thing to note, the driver section of the XF86Config should say
LoadModule "nvidia" instead of "nv"... "nv" is the XF4.01 driver,
"nvidia" is the actual driver from Nvidia.

You can manually edit root's cron job. It's located in various different
places (eg., /var/spool/cron/). Or else su to root and do crontab -e.
You'll be using a vi style editor to edit the file, but if you're fine with
that ... then you can just change the times yourself. Do man cron to get
more on the syntax of the crontab file.

Startup and shutdown activity are governed by scripts. On my Slackware
box, they're in /etc/rc.d/ ... rc.0 and rc.[runlevel]. Other boxes have
slightly different methods for startup and shutdown. Poke around your box
and see. Redhat (and various other distros) should have some online
documentation for this.

That sounds like some bizzare non-sequitor rhetorical question. It all
depends on what is being served. I think it's safe to say that just
about any Linux box can be set up to serve anything. Dollar for dollar,
it is the best OS for "serving" around.

Greetings.

I have installed kernel 2.4.0-test10 onto my SuSE 7.0 system.
When performing the make modules_install, the modules get placed
into a nice hierarchical layout within the /lib/modules/2.4.0-test10
  directory. for example.

         /lib/modules/2.4.0-test10/kernel/drivers/net/n2k-pci.o

However, modprobe is looking for the modules in the more boring old
style layout, with everything one level down. for example

        /lib/modules/2.4.0-test10/net/n2k-pci.o

This is confirmed by executing modprobe --showconfig.
Because of the difference in hierarchy, modprobe fails to load
  any of the modules.

Is this new layout intentional, or has my machine messed up somewhere?

If it is intentional, what changes need to be made to allow modprobe
  to operate correctly?

Alternatively, is this caused by something within the SuSE environment?
I have has to turn off kerneld (it's on by default), as the kernel
documentation states that it's not required, but this has had no effect,
even on the 2.2.16 kernel, which works correctly.

Hi,
I am having issues with printing from samba, and it turns out to be a
directory permissions problem. Here is the scenario:

Printer attached to Linux box.
Samba sharing printer for Windows clients access.

When samba gets an incoming job, it tries to access the spool directory as
user "nobody"
When lpd starts up, I see from the start up script that it first runs
checkpc, and checkpc makes the directory permissions to 0700 so that only
the user lp has access.

What is the recommended why to get around this?

Is there a way to tell samba to be the user lp when trying to print?

Is there a way in the printcap config to specify the spool directory
permissions so that checkpc will not change them from 0777 to 0700?

I can comment out the checkpc line in the startup script, but I would rather
find out if there is a more elegant way to go about fixing this.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi,

Recently on my Slackware 7.0 system, my gnome-session wasn't remembering
preferences, such as color and font of gnome-terminal, panel applets
displayed only default settings, and my enlightenment preferences were
set to default of 4 virtual screens. I viewed this as a problem in
search of a fix.

Looking around I found `du` showed my hard disk filled up to 100% due to
/tmp filled with old sessions, 1 gigabytes of files and directories with
date stamps since the system was installed 10 months ago.

Why does /tmp fill up (1Gig on my 2.7G partition) with old sessions? Is
that normal for a Slackware default of a Gnome and KDE install from
setup?

In an effort to reduce directory contents I did a `cd /tmp && rm -r *`
and in setup removed KDE and fvwm files, all of which gained back 1 Gig.
The only noticeable effect was that I had to put back my panel applets,
etc. as mentioned above.

Before:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/hda2 2.7G 2.6G 0M 100% /

After:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/hda2 2.7G 1.6G 1016M 62% /

As a possible aside note, gnome-session seems to have a few errors that
causes /tmp to keep its directory contents between sessions:
rm: cannot remove `/home/brian/.gnome//gmc-JaYQsH': No such file or
directory

Any help is appreciated!
