Why delete them? Just make sure they have no passwords so as to make it
impossible to sign on to them. Some of them are good-- your daemons are
run under their names, and some will ot work unless those usrnames are
there ( look in /etc/rc.local and the various scripts in
/etc/rc.d/init.d)

My personal experience is that I couldn't get a workable system
up and working after trying on three separate occasions. I think
probably that this might have been a combination of actual "bugs"
in the distro and just the fact that so many things were different
that I didn't really know how to get some things working (no
speculation offered on the relative percentages of these two factors).

With respect, I have to take issue with this matter. I'm not
competent to judge whether the 2.96 release is "technically"
a better compiler than 2.91. However, gcc comes from the
Free Software Foundation (GNU), who says that the 2.96
version is a test version and not intended to be included in a
system distribution. I have to take their word for it.

As for Red Hat packaging their maintained version of gcc,
this smacks too much to me of Microsoft trying to foist
off their own version of Java on the rest of the world,
regardless of what Sun was doing. I assume that Red Hat
has good motives in trying to package what they see to be
a technically superior compiler, but that's what it feels
like.

Hopefully, the 2.4-series kernels will reach the point
that they can be compiled with the later compilers, and
this will become a moot point.

Prerouting ... sounds like iptables to me. Anyway... below is a setup for
ipchains.

eg. you have 2 network card on the computer and you already have packet
forwarding enabled and set up via ipchains.

Internet<---->(203.x.x.x (dynamic))Server With Squid (192.168.1.1)<---->Your
Local LAN (192.168.1.x)

# A few things needed for transparent proxying
ipchains -A input -p tcp -d localhost 80 -j REJECT
ipchains -A input -d 192.168.1.1/32 80 -p tcp -j REJECT
ipchains -A input -d 192.168.1.1/32 80 -p udp -j REJECT

# Redirect things to port 80 to port 3128
ipchains -A input -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0 80 -p tcp -j REDIRECT 3128
ipchains -A input -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0 80 -p udp -j REDIRECT 3128

# Optionally, you can also redirect SSL and FTP
ipchains -A input -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0 443 -p tcp -j REDIRECT 3128
ipchains -A input -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0 443 -p udp -j REDIRECT 3128
ipchains -A input -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0 21 -p tcp -j REDIRECT 3128
ipchains -A input -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0 21 -p udp -j REDIRECT 3128

Your squid needs to be configured as a HTTPD accelerator as well.

httpd_accel_host virtual
httpd_accel_port 80
httpd_accel_with_proxy on
httpd_accel_uses_host_header on

Newer Versions of LILO (version >= 21.4) actually supports the options LBA32
and LINEAR that will allow you to go over 1024 Cylinders for HDD that
supports it.

Subject: Re: How do you set hostname in linux box that gets ip via DHCP?
Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2001 01:32:54 GMT

I'm still not sure what to do. My machine name is chinook. I have no
qualified domain. Should I edit the /etc/hosts file to read

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.0.1 chinook 192.168.0.1

?????

In my case, chinook is the name of my linux box. It's IP address can
be anything from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.25 depending on the whim of
the DHCP server, which is the Maxgate switch, which has an address of
192.168.0.1.

Or, earlier, should I just use www.fo.com and foo1.foo.com etc., even
though they have no bearing on my actual situation??? Again, It would
be simpler if I had a fully qualified domain name, but I dont. I just
have a bunch of computers in my home, each of which has a name.
(chinook in the case of the linux box, but lets just say A, B, C,
etc.)

TIA,
Ed

How about New MacOS X? It is built on BSD Unix.
For Linux, there is PPC Linux and Yellow Dog Linux
The source code for Star Office has been released, so you can try to compile it
yourself or see if
some nice person has already compiled it for Linux for PPC.

Subject: Kernel compilation failed ? Redhat 7.0

I need to config the Redhat 7.0 to have mars_nwe. So I followed the
instructions. It says I need to compile the kernel with IPX-support,
but no full internal net.

I don't know what does it mean "Get a 'good' ipx-kernel-version", so
I simply follow the www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO-2.html to
compile the kernel and set

   The IPX protocol (CONFIG_IPX) [N/m/y/?] y
   Full internal IPX network (CONFIG_IPX_INTERN) [N/y/?] n

make xconfig
make dep
make clean

All looks good, but at

make bzImage
at some point, it says:

....
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/kernel_stat.h:47: (Each undeclared identifier
is re
ported only once
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/kernel_stat.h:47: for each function it appears
in.)

And quit.

How can I point out what's wrong ? I assume the distribution should
be bug free for re-make kernel ?

Thanks

Why not just sell them outright at the cost difference of USB/PCI? I'm

Okay, well one thing at a time, I suppose. First, how do I "configure
the pipeline to accept connections from the ethernet port", as you say?
Sorry, I'm kind of new at Linux. By the way, I have my ethernet card
recognized now whenever the OS boots. Thanks for that.

I feel your pain. :)

And speaking of pain, it hurts to say this, but right now if I need to do
real wordprocessing (not textprocessing, which is probably fantabulous,
but I just don't know [La]Tex), I have to reboot and run Word. Unfortunate, but
true and fortunately, I have Windows installed just for that sort of
thing.

I wish I could get it fixed in SO. If I could fix this and figure out how
to launch a given SO app WITHOUT the braindead desktop environment, I'd really
like it.
