I have an ethernet card which is recognized by my Linux isntall. However
after I installed, the driver is set to unknown in the hwconf file for
this ethernet card.

How can I associate the tulip driver (or get Linux to recognize) to the
ethernet card. The ethernet card vendor supports the tulip driver?

I had a 8330 working for ages sorry I didn't see this earlier to help. If
you have windozer look under the device properties and note the setting
under MSS MicroSuck Sound and write them down. When you reboot into Linux as
Root .You can run "/usr/sbin/sndconfig" as root without shutting down the
computer and enter in only that recorded data. Disable everything else. You
will be up and running.

If you want trivial, look for something called 'slirp'. You just execute
this from a shell prompt and it gives you a ppp connection on the
line with no setup. You do need to run a normal getty on your
modem port, and since you aren't doing a PPP login you have to
set up the modem chat to log you in, or if you are using windows
dial-up-networking, set it to give you a terminal screen first so
you can log in and start slirp manually.

There are several ways to do this. The simplest, assuming you use graphical
log-in, is to put that command in your .bashrc in your home directory. If
not, you can create a simple script in your home directory, or alias a new
command in your .bashrc, that will run the xmodmap command and reference
your own .xmodmaprc, again in your home directory. I had a large number of
keys to modify to suit me, so I simply copied the system .xmodmaprc and
made the changes there. My .bashrc has this alias:

alias xmod='xmodmap /home/ed/.xmodmaprc'

Thus, when I log on, the first thing I do is type "xmod" and it sets the
keyboard for me. It applies to ALL apps run under X, including terminal
windows.

As usual, you can read it all, in the usual abstract manpage format, by
typing "man xmodmap".

This might be the solution. I've had similar problems in the
past and researched it, found the solution. Don't recall exactly
why this works, but here's what I have in my /etc/fstab for my
Windows partition (which I only use for data):

/dev/hda1 /windows/c vfat noauto,user,exec,rw 0 0

Try those settings for your DOS partition. It may allow other users
to mount, umount, delete, etc.; so read up on the extra parameters
if those are of concern to you.

Hi,

I finally got sound working. When I do cat file.au > /dev/audio I hear
the file play. But no apps in x can use the soundcard. For example when I
try to play an mp3 from xmms, I get the message;

Please check that:

1. You have the correct output plugin selected
2. No other programs is blocking the soundcard
3. Your soundcard is configured properly

well, I can play using cat, fusers doesn't show anyone else using the
soundcard, and I've tried all the output plugins it suggests.

When I try xfreecd I get:

cd_control(CDROMPLAYTRKIND-1): Input/output error

and it says no disc, even though there is a disc in the cdrom, and it
will even eject it.

Can anyone help me?

The eth0 device is linked to the driver in the /etc/conf.modules

You can use mc (midnight commander). it will read *.deb (or rpm, tar,
tgz, ...) like virtual filesystems. So you will be able to read or
  extract any file you want.

I understand that Partition Magic is having a serious problem with Windows
ME because this version of Windows does not recognize the "normal" DOS
shell. Therefore you cannot partition and multi-boot under pm5. I understand
this is the same with latest pm boot and partition tools. I would like to

future when Partition Magic works can I repartition nondestructively.

Alternatively, you can use "ar" (the GNU Binutils "archiver") to take
a look at what's in a .deb file:
% ar t xli_1.17.0.2_i386.deb
debian-binary
control.tar.gz
data.tar.gz
% ar x xli_1.17.0.2_i386.deb
% ls -l
total 137
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1214 Nov 5 23:02 control.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 135806 Nov 5 23:02 data.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4 Nov 5 23:02 debian-binary

data.tar.gz contains, via "tar tfvz data.tar.gz"
