Both kppp and gppp install a large buggy front end to run the chat and

If youwant to get kppp running, look elsewhere.

Subject: setting host name and IP with DSL (pppoe)
Date: 07 Nov 2000 10:31:10 -0800

Hi All-

I've recently more-or-less succesfully gotten DSL to work (RH6.1, pppoe
from roaring penguin). Brilliant! But there are a few minor hitches:

I used to use the machine for a combination of dialup and direct
ethernet access at work, so I had the machine name (mapped to the IP
address in /etc/hosts) set to be what it would be when attached to
ethernet. Everything worked fine. Note that because it's a laptop, I do
not have pppoe set to go at startup.

In order to set up DSL, I've removed the original ethernet stuff (dns,
gateway, and the original entry in /etc/hosts). So the question now is:
what ip address do I give the machine?

If I don't map the machine name to an IP address in /etc/hosts (which
seems to be the logical thing to do, since it doesn't have a permanent
address), nearly everything works, except that httpd fails on startup,
and some things fail that want to be able to resolve the host name.

If I just add the machine name as an alias to "localhost", many things
work, except, conspicuously, sending mail, which is very important!

Any ideas?

Andrew

p.s. a related question: is there a way to set things up so I can
occasionally use the network card for standard ethernet without having
to switch settings manually?

Subject: Dial-IN PPP help!!! Please!
Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2000 10:32:42 -0800

Hello,

I have been trying to setup my RedHat 7.0 Linux box to support dial-in
PPP from a win98 laptop.

My goal is to be able able to dial in and have Linux at like a mini
ISP and give my laptop access to the LAN and to the internet for
browsing, FTP, etc.

I have made lots of progress toward this goal but I'm stuck on one
final piece. After reading lots of documents on the net including
this one:

http://www.europe.redhat.com/documentation/HOWTO/ISP-Setup-RedHat.php3

I have my Win98 laptop dialing in and connecting over PPP and
establishing TCP/IP protocol with no problem. Win98 seems happy with
the connection and so does Linux.

Now here is the problem. It seems that NOTHING is ever sent back to
the laptop. IE if I issue a ping 192.168.168.185 (my Linux box) from
the laptop while connected the ping times out. I can see data going
INTO the Linux box over the modem but NOTHING ever comes back out.

Same deal if I try a browser. If I try to connect to: www.redhat.com
I can see the laptop sending data but NOTHING is ever sent back to the
laptop.

I can't help but think that there is a simple routing issue going on.
I just need help finding it.

Here is what I have done so far:

1) followed the application instructions in the web document above
2) my laptop is assigned an IP of 192.168.168.51 (which is clear) from
the Linux box.
3) I have the linux box setup to forward IP
(/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward=1)
4) I have "defaultroute) in the /etc/ppp/options file.
5) I went into linuxconf and set:
   a) my default gateway (needed for Linux to route to internet
anyway)
   b) Enabled routing
   c) setup to export default route

That is about as far as I know how to go. Can anybody suggest
anything else to try!?

Thanks in advance!

Mark

the same result.

What did you have to do to get the kernel to compile?

I've got the same problem and nearly the same module list via lsmod. I've tried
about everything and plip still refuses to install.

Looking over what has been compiled into my kernel (caldera open linux 2.40) I
don't see any interference from other modules and plip is compiled correctly.

So... I'm all ears too.

See the extract below for 2.4.0-test9:

HOSTCC          = kgcc <<<------------
HOSTCFLAGS      = -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer

CROSS_COMPILE =

#
# Include the make variables (CC, etc...)
#

AS              = $(CROSS_COMPILE)as
LD              = $(CROSS_COMPILE)ld
CC              = $(CROSS_COMPILE)kgcc   <<<-----------

The arrows show the only changes I made to the Makefile.
About make menuconfig. Did you install the kernel-headers
rpm and copy the proper config file in /usr/src/linux/configs
to /usr/src/linux/.config? I ask because the config files in
the configs dir are what RH used to compile the system.

Subject: help with ftp guest access
Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2000 19:05:52 GMT

I have set up a user in the passwd file with a /bin/false shell.

I've set up a group that the user belongs to, I've assigned that group
to the guestgroup in the ftpaccess file.

The /bin/false shell exists in the /etc/shells file.

When I try to log on as this user, I get the message:

530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.

When I add a bash shell to the user, I get the message:

530 Can't set guest privileges.
Login failed.

This is the entry in the passwd file for the user:

ctload:x:509:509:FTP User:/home/ctload./ctr:/bin/false

This is the group
ftpusers:x:509:ctload

So, something is hosed. I've configured 2 other systems, and I swear it
didn't take much more than getting the group in the ftpaccess file, but
I'm a bit stumped on this one.

Thanks for any help you have to offer.

Sort of.
In the file inetd.conf, each entry looks like this:
[name of protocol according to /etc/services] [connection type, usually stream
tcp nowait] [who the daemon should run as] [what daemon should be run for a
connection on this port]

The daemon tcpd is often used for security reasons. The tcpd daemon checks the
hosts.allow and so forth. The syntax for the tcpd daemon just includes the
command line that should be run if tcpd succeeds. So typically a line like
    ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd -l -a
means: if a connection comes in on the ftp port (usually 21), stream, tcp, no
wait, run as root the command "/usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd -l -a" so, tcpd will
check through hosts.allow and so forth. Assuming it succeeds, "in.ftpd -l -a"
will be run to finally handle the connection.

BTW, all of the information I said above can be found in the various man pages.

BTW again:
I just noticed one error.
Look in your file /etc/services for sshd. It doesn't exist. It's simply ssh.

I have a Coppermine 650 128Mb ram machine with and an adaptec 2910N Ultrawide SCSI
adapter.

My problem is whenever I boot up it give me the following error and I can't get passed
it to fix it.

 LILO boot:

I've tried even booting up from the CD ROM and doing a linux rescue and it still gives
me the same thing

It started happening after I installed yale-tftpd on my system, started noticing
netscape dying whenever started it up and clicked on it once anywhere in the netscape
window , and locking my X session , also stopping me from doing a clean reboot , hence
me having to hit the reset button.

My system is a redhat 6.2 box, I've also recently added a second network card could
this be affecting it?

I'm suspcious of the fact I'm going to have to dump the first disk for some weird
reason. I'm not doing any over clocking either (Been checking on other web forums,
this seemed to be an issue in this case.) And I've run the SCSI disk verify utility
from the SCSI bios too, clean successfully on both disks in my system. I'm confused
and frustrated.

Thankfully I have my trusty backup linux box.

Can anyone suggest a way in so I can fix this. Or suggest an error that may be causing
this.

Ash

Oh, your signature is compliant, it did not appear with reply, how
refreshing (he said, hoping his is)

So I not in your script that startx is not mentioned at all.

Currently from a terminal logged on as a specific user I start a
vncserver, but I wanted it to start a new x server session so each user
can have any X.

So before I start the vncserver session I can edit .vnc/xstartup script
but will this start a new X server session?

Ok, I wrote explicitely that working ne2k is in _this_ machine (I take
that "ne200" above is a typo). Quite a number of different
manufacturers were making "ne2k compatibles". None of these designs is
stellar. Most of them are workable, some are plain terrible. I did
have SMC Ultra cards working in Alphas but I did not see that kind of a
card for a very long while so I did not mention it explicitely. I have
no idea what is "davies". As for "intel" this is not clear what you
have in mind. "epro10" are just broken by design and should not be
touched with a ten feet pole; luckily probably (nearly?) all landed in
garbage bins a long time ago. "epro100" is substantially different card
and could be good even if it is quirky. Intel driver for it has various
workarounds for never published bugs of some revisions. Some people
have a very good success with these (regardless of a platform) and some
report strange happenings. I used it on Alpha once and for a short
while. It worked. What would happen on a long run and under heavy load
- I have no idea. If you were thinking about some other "intel" then I
do not know. In summary - as far as I can tell there is nothing
special about network cards on Alpha. Issues are the same as on
other platform. Yes, I did use a long time ago an ISA networking
card on Alpha - once or twice. Nowadays doing that would be a mistake.

Forget Partition Magic. The reason you could not boot linux is that the hdax
number changes when you repartition your drive. Use the boot disk that you
originally created and boot with linux root = /dev/hdax where x = the new
partition number,.. then, once you are in check /etc/fstab and make sure
your / is mounted in the correct /dev/hdax, otherwise make the appropriate
changes. I suggest searching on some newsgroup or at deja.com with the error
message, you will find enough references to see you through this problem.
