Subject: KPPP problem -- I think
Date: Sun, 25 Jun 2000 09:19:06 -0600
I'm running RH 6.0 & KDE and recently added a SCSI card and DAT drive for
which I had no support. So, I set about to build a new kernel (2.2.16)
with SCSI support. That part worked swell. I now have a full backup and
have resolved all the problems but one. If I boot the new kernel, log in
as a normal user and use the KPPP app to attempt to dial my ISP, I get a
pop-up which says:
This kernel has no PPP support, neither compiled in nor via the kernel
module loader. To solve this problem:
* contact your system administrator
or
* install a kernel with ppp support
BUT my new kernel DOES have ppp support. Here's a excerpt from dmesg:
=============
Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 2, lun 0 scsi : detected 1
SCSI tape total. PPP: version 2.3.7 (demand dialling) TCP compression code
copyright 1989 Regents of the University of California PPP line discipline
registered. Partition check:
==============
To complicate the symptoms even more (at least for me, or I wouldn't be
posting this), all I have to do to make KPPP work for a normal user is:
1. Cold boot
2. Log in as root
3. Start KPPP, click "connect" and abort before connecting.
4. Log out -- either normally or using cntrl+alt+backspace
5 Log in as a normal user
6. Start KPPP.
That's the way I'm running right now.
I'm obviously missing something here. Can someone point me in the right
direction? TIA

you can get sound when you are root? If you say yes, just add the user
who should be allowed to access sond to the right group:
There should be a group for audio-users on your system. Edit the file
/etc/group as root with your favourit editor an add the login-name of
the users you want to allow to use audio:
audio:x:29:martin
^^
Leave the value you found, 29 was found on my Debian.
And do not type martin. ;-)
Hope that helps,
Martin

keytable=/boot/us.klt

Using Helixcode Gnome with Sawfish, I am running ito a problem
with popup windows: Any child windows that appear try to resize
to the same dimensions as their parent window. Thus, little
dialog boxes come up very large. I cant seem to find a control
panel setting for this. Has anyone else come across this problem
and its solution?

I never tried that, but I have used:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=64k
It will over-write the MBR, partition table and all data. If you are really
security conscious, you will want to repeat the process with /dev/urandom
a few times and then /dev/zero again. This is because it is possible to read
a disk even after it has been over-written, albeit with special equipment.

Yes, I know because I read them, but this question wasn't posted until
recently. I went back a couple of months in this NG and searched through
hundreds of postings and saw nothing about it until now.
In my case I do not see a lilo cfg file in the etc dir because I am running
RH 6.2. If I remember, there is a conflilo file there and I edited that and
rebooted but RH still does not see my 128megs but rather only 64megs. If I
try to run lilo from within RH, nothing happens.
I guess I will go to the redhat linux ng and search through hundreds of
postings there or use Dejanews again before somebody else posts "RTFM!"
again.
Thanx for all your help BTW.

Then I upgraded my SuSE 6.2 (a level comparable to yours) to 6.4 and the

Ouch! You're kidding, right? The proper way to do this, of course, is
using 'usermod' (and 'groupadd'/'groupmod', if necessary). Read the

Yep, change the location in /etc/passwd
eg
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
to
root:x:0:0:root:/somewhere/root:/bin/bash
But make sure the other location is accessable etc before doing it (test it
with a non root account first).
It shouldn't be disastrous if it doesn't work but you never know.

VERY bad advice. Never give any file or directory 777 permission. The
most that scripts should have is 755 (or maybe 775 on RedHat, but not for
CGI or CGI directories).
The problem is very likely that Unix (Linux) systems will not run scripts
handled on DOS/Win systems unless you ftp upload as ASCII text or remove
the carriage returns from text files and scripts. DOS/Win ends text lines
with CRLF (^M^J or "\r\n") and Unix just uses LF (also known as newline or
"\n". You may think the shebang line is trying to use /bin/sh, but really
it cannot find "/bin/sh^M" or whatever the interpreter is.
One quick solution is to load the file into pico (that comes with pine),
do a space, backspace, and save the file. But if a script like that was
on CD, the CD writer did not know what they were doing, and I would be
skeptical of anything else on the CD.
If it is a perl script you can usually run it as "perl scriptname" because
perl doesn't care about carriage returns, it is just the shell that cannot
cope with them. But make sure that perl scripts run as "./scriptname"
before attempting to use as CGI.

I agree with Russ. And a proof that it is a permissions problem, would be to run
the CD-based script with a shell interpreter:
sh -c {script-name}
That will run any script, executable permission set or not.

I guess I have never seen an X login screen because I boot into runlevel
3. VNC can allow you to run an X server remotely from most any OS or
control Win from X. The vncserver is run in the background and can be
accessed (password protected) on the same or different box using a
vncviewer or any Java capable web browser. The default window manager is
twm, but I use it wih enlightenment. Haven't tried it with KDE yet.
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/index.html
Other X servers would likely cost you money and would run X programs just
like you would from another Linux box. But the only login screen you
would get is when you telnet or ssh into the shell to start the Linux X
program.

Bootdisk? For Installation or to boot to Linux after its installed?
Install: dosutils/rawrite from CD
