The original poster has RH7. This comes with gcc-2.96
and kgcc which is gcc-2.95 I believe. U'll have to ask
RH why the new name.

Start with the Printing HOWTO. It will serve as an introduction and should
help you to get at least plain text output.

Hi Ian :
You must include the special drivers into your bootdisk.
Try to make your kernel to supportting the special driver. ( you should
buit-in the new driver)

Best regards.

That's because Red-Hat 6.2 doesn't recognize the controller.
you can ask the Compaq to support for you.
Of course, you can create a installation disk & bootdisk to support and
install Linux by yourself. ( I always do it when the Linux doesn't recognize
the chipset.).

I'm running RH 6.2 on my home server and have just installed Xitami web
server and FTP server. Now I want to disable the web server (Apache) and
FTP server that came with RH. I've had no problem turning off the Apache
web server (using Linuxconf) but I can see how to disable the FTP
server. There's no mention of ftpd or similar in Linuxconf. How's it
done?

A quick direct response to [EMAIL PROTECTED] will be very much
appreciated.

Thanks!

Subject: hang up while booting with "L020202020.." and "LI..."
Date: Wed, 8 Nov 2000 21:19:56 +0800

Hi, I've encountered a problem that my new installed turbolinux server 6.1
doesn't boot.
The following two error message were given in the screen while I boot it
with either SystemCommander ver.2.5 and/or NTloader:
Case 1. L02020202020202020202020202.........(no ending)
Case 2. LI
           LI
LI (three lines of "LI" showed up, and then hanged up.)

The case 1 happened to that the turbolinux has been installed in a partition
where comes after a partition whose partition was NTFS.
On the other hand, case 2 only happened when I installed turbolinux into the
first partition.
Note that HDD/OS in the PC having above-mentioned troubles are :
an SCSI-2(2G) has been assigned as drive 0 and has a DOS6.2 (FAT16) and a
NT4.0 (NTFS) operating system installed.
an IDE/ATA66(8G) has been assign as drive 1 and has been used as a DATA
storage drive so far (NTFS, no OS).

The troubled turboxlinux can be booted with a boot-floppy and/or from DOS6.2
by using the "loadlin" utility as follows:
loadlin vmlinuz root=/dev/hdc1 ro
(vmlinuz is the kernel turbolinux used and hdc1 is the partition it
installed)

Has anybody there encountered the same things?
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm using the twm window manager (with Gnome, Redhat 6.2),

With RH you can enter the interactive start-up mode (hit i when asked

Then you can manually choose NOT to start xfs

Hellu,

Linux hangs when I write something to the /dev/st0 port.
How can I debug/solve this ??

What I do/did ?

I type for example: tar -cvf /dev/st0 <some file>
and it hangs, I really have to reset it by reset the computer itself. It
doesn't listen to any keyboard command anymore.

Since when this happens ?
I installed the PowerChutPlus, version 4.5.2-1 to control my UPS from APC.
During installation it complained that the com port wasn't configured
correctly (it has to be configured for local use instead as for modem use),
and the installation was interrupted.
Since that day, I am not able to make a backup anymore by using tar, which
happens as a cronjob.

Any ideas ??

The -f switch is only used when making tar files. You should omit it
when writing directly to a tape drive.

What do you mean with that? Windows will recognize partitions created
with linux (c)fdisk just fine. Ofcourse the partition ID must be one of
the types that windows knows of.

> out the data. Hopefully if you use gpart you will find what the table

Did PM make this mess? That's not very likely. I suppose the original
poster used the mandrake (re)partitioner. They should put a serious
warning on the screen before anyone can use it, 'cause it's notorious in
(corrupting) partition tables.

Perhaps the original poster can use GNU's parted to resize the
partitions, so they will start at cylinder boundary's again.

After that, don't use any other partitioning tool than PM. If you have
this tool, use it. It may not be free (so if you haven't bought it yet,
try parted first), but it's the best piece of non-free software you can
get (IMO).

The partition table is probably not corrupt, but PM is very strict on
what it does allow. I suppose mainly for compatability reasons (DOS
FDISK can only start/end a partition on a cylinder boundary)

So maybe the table is corrupt (but I couldn't tell from what I've seen),
could the original poster post the result of linux `fdisk -l /dev/hda`
please?

Yeah right. I know PM can abort with these error messages,
(I've had them myself too) but that doesn't make it bad software.
(I agree the error message aren't very clear)
But partitiontable's aren't easy. Every single OS on the market
that claim's to understand a PC's partitiontable has it's own
gotcha's in handling these tables. PM's tries to be so generic
in the table it creates/handles due to these (in)compatabilities.

If you would have used PM to create your table from start,
and not mess with the fdisk's from any OS, PM will resize, create
and delete all entries just fine. But if you have used an fdisk,
that's is more rich-featured than DOS fdisk (like the linux one)
PM may find it impossible to deal with your table.

If you would obey all the rules PM does (and they are too stringent, I
know)
you would never have any partition table problem to begin with.

Was your partition table correct?
The fact that you think it was, doesn't mean that it really was.
(You can use a partition from an incorrect table just fine
(depends on the error there is in the table) but that doesn't make it
correct
You will on the other hand have absolutely *no* guarantee that the data
on such a partition (and in fact on the entire disc!) will stay
uncorrupted
over time.
I suspect that at least 10% of every PC user out there that has more
than
one OS on his/her PC has an incorrect partition table. (I've seen it far
too often)

Goto my site at http://www.phonax.com it will tell you about setting up SMTP.

Setting up pop is as trivial as editting /etc/inetd.conf file search for pop3
and remove the "#" save the file and type killall -1 inetd
(ONLY WHEN YOU USE LINUX!!!)

My site has been down this whole morning due to the fact that the ISP is
merging two giant networks. So if you can't connect keep trying later.

Anyway, partition that large partition into pieces.
(/usr /usr/local /var /tmp /home /boot)
I most certainly wouldn't like to wait on a FS check on that large
partition.
besides, partitioning it, would be safer for your data too. If one FS
got corrupted, all the others would (most likely) still be intact.
