Those are source rpms which has source code to be compiled to a binary
rpm. You can do something like 'rpm --rebuild name-version.src.rpm' to
compile it. But is that what you really want to do? You should look
for the matching binary version unless know this is what you want to do.

These are the raw source. You should have the finished binary versions
as well -- probably on a separate CD. If this is RH, the src.rpms are on
the 2nd CD.

You've got a CD-ROM containing only source code. Unless you're prepared
to build all your packages from source (with the chicken-and-egg problem
of how you install packages required to do the building), I'd suggest
you get hold of a pre-compiled binary CD of your distribution.

I'm trying to setup a linux box so I can dial into it remotely -
obviously, that means setting the modem to auto answer incoming phone
calls. Problem is, there is also a fax machine connected to that phone
line (in another part of the building), which is also set to answer the
phone when it rings.

The fax answers after 2 rings. I could set the modem to answer after,
for instance, 5 rings. But it seems to me that that does me no good.
Once the fax has picked up after 2 rings (whether it's an incoming fax
or not), the modem will never get a chance to handle the call.

Is there any (inexpensive or free) way that these devices can co-exist
on the same line?

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Hello,
   I recently installed Mandrake Linux, Linux for Windows (lnx4win), on
my laptop. I already had Windows 98 on my computer. The problem is
that several programs are not working correctly, the most important ones
being the editors, Emacs, Pico, and ed. I just get the message:
bash: emacs: command not found
I had an old computer with Mandrake Linux on it also (in which emacs
worked), and I have compared the old emacs and bash files, and changed
the PATH, but I cannot find out what is wrong. Please contact me if you
can in anyway help me solve this prolem.

Yes, I seems to get that LI with Slackware 7 if I installed in the first
linux partition. Wonder is this a bug with Slackware 7.

Wish I could give you some direction with the Cyrix, but never had any
experience with one. SUSE either. I've run just about every flavor with
the exception of. Up until about a month ago, I'd been doing all my
playing on an Intel MMX 233 and never had any difficulty at all. I just
recently built this one which is an AMD K6 2/550 with ALI chipset and
Award Bios. I had a hell of a time getting the bios set up where it
would boot and run right on the AMD with RH 6.1. Touchy as hell. You
may wind up having to compile a kernel on another machine and
configuring it for the Cyrix.

Wish you luck. I imagine someone around one of these groups has an
answer they can give you.

The FAQs and HOW-TOs are all at linux.com; but I must mention that
there are many distributions which are easier on the newbie than
Debian is (although Debian is much better in other areas). In
particular, Mandrake 7.x, RedHat 6.2 and Suse 6.3 or better are very
easy to get printing right.

Sorry, I'm confused again.

Should I look for a rpm file on CD-ROM #2 of my RedHat-Mandrake 3 disk set?  A
rpm file marked gpm or ncurses? Do I want both?

If I can't find either one, what do you suggest. Something off your FAQ sheet?

This could mean any of these:

  o You don't have permission to open the device node (not root, bad
    permissions)

  o The kernel doesn't have support either compiled in or loaded as a
    module for your card (did you recompile your kernel and forget to
    compile the proper sound modules?)

  o Your card is not supported at all by the driver Mandrake wants to
    use (you can try and load it manually to see if you can do it)

  o Some other program is using /dev/audio and has a lock on it

There are several hostnames, for some reason -- you can avoid any
problems by making sure that /etc/hosts has:

127.0.0.1  cool_hostname.domain cool_hostname localhost localhost.localdomain

That way, eveything will still resolve properly.

The problem is with a new Sawfish feature that
saves histories ( things like the size of windows
) and then screwing up with dialog windows (likely
placing the dialogs in the same catagory as the
parent window and sizing them accordingly). So you
need to turn off window history, unfortunately I
can't remember where that setting is as I don't
have access to my computer with the latest Sawfish
now. I think there should be a setting somewhere
in the  configuration program.

you put the windoze boxes into the server list in
/etc/X11/xdm/Xservers (for xdm and kdm )
or
/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf  (for gdm )

assuming the windoze box has an X server running that will
accept gdm or xdm taking over .

the question of which X server package to install on the
windoze box isn't really a linux related question.

Xappeal has a demo version .
there are reviews of the commercially available packages on the web.

> I wish to see the same X login display like I am in front of a
> linux terminal presenting to me an X login.

now the VNC is free ; but it works a lot differently to a
"windoze xterminal  server".

with the vnc the user is allocated an address on the server.
and a password to log in with;
also the vnc process for that user must be kept alive
(between crashes, and reboots ).

then the user must remember there address and password
and log in.

This is a drawback as its a bit tedious and obfuscated.
(feel free to create a front end that
 calls the client with the correct address .. )

The advantage  is that the "X server"  lives on the linux server;
the image of the screen is stored in the server; the address of the
x terminal is the server's address with a different window number.
The windoze client is just a window that "looks at" and replicated this
virtual server !

and what this means is that you can open and close the windoze client window
at any time on any pc and look at and use your server as it was
last time you saw it; in fact it is as if you never "detached";

No other X server that displays on windoze can do this.

The vnc works ok over the modem because it tries to compress the
image data. This does require the cpu at both ends to be reasonable;
400mhz or better is good.

However this is a disadvantage on the LAN as it introduces lag needlessly.

(I wonder if the linux source code can be modified to reduce
its compressing efforts; and thus reduce LAN latency )

There are  linux and windoze clients and servers;
and all servers can be shared between multiple clients;

the windoze server only provides a replication of the real windoze
display; and so only one server can run.

Dont do this !!
the /root should exist in single user mode;
and in single user mode, the other partitions will not be mounted;
and so , you should not move /root off the / partition.

but that doesn't maintain the name as /root

Actually it is as simple as follows.
Assuming new partition at  /mnt/hdc1..

cd /mnt/hdc1
find /root  | cpio -pvdum .

rm -rf /root
ln -s /mnt/hdc1/root /root

the symbolic link will work fine.

but don't do this at all.
