Ya YA.. Netscrap sucks.. What ever! I like it. I want to know how to
upgrade 4.73 to 4.76. I have done the uninstall thing and installed
4.76. But when I goto the howto docs it can't find Netscape. Is there an
easy way to install 4.76 over top of 4.73?
I am using Linux Mandrake 7.1 Kernel 2.2.16
Thanks in advance.

if this persist after recompiling the kernel, you might wanna check
if the memory is faulty. replace the memory and see if this still goes
on.
lately there are some news about a feature that can mark part of a
memory "bad" and kernel will not use it. maybe that'd save you some
dough if memory is the problem.

Hello,
I just installed a redhad 7.0 on my Dell Inspiron 4000. I setup the X
window fine. But I don't know which server it uses, XMarch64?
How can I know that? Now the problem is whenever I move mouse or hitting
arrow keys (in X window
or not), I can hear a low zzzzzz... clicking sound. It
doesn't seem to be from
the speaker, because when I plug in the headphone, I
can still hear it. Is it a problem the notebook? When I use windows, I
don't hear it. Also when I am running
"x11perf -pointer", I don't hear it also. But after
the "x11perf" window disapperas, the sound comes back. It's very
annoying. Please let me know how to fix it.
The second question. Seems like the system (Gnome on Redhat 7.0)
constantly
writes to hard disk. I can hear the disk operation every 5 seconds or
so while
the system is idle. How do I
find out what's being writing or read from the disk? How do I disable
it? I don't
think the system has to use the disk that much.
Thanks a lot!
Joe

I'm not a webmaster, not really familiar with these, but you can try
two things:
1. edit the apache configuration file. put your hostname on it. make
sure you have a hostname specified for this machine.
2. check the apache error log
the reason that i didn't tell you where the files are is because I
know my distro (SuSE) use completely different files from RH.
good luck.

Subject: oidentd & xinetd.conf configuration
Date: Thu, 09 Nov 2000 06:38:03 GMT
I'm running RedHat 7.0 on a box I use to provide an ipchains firewall.
I use IP masquerading. My internal win 98 boxes are not able to connect
to dal.net irc servers due to ident errors and connection refusals by
the dal.net servers. I don't have problems with other irc servers and
ipchains seems fine for everthing else other than dal.net connections.
I've heard that the dal.net ident problem is associated with trying to
connect to dal.net servers throught a firewall with masquerading
enabled, and can be resolved by using oidentd. Can anybody send me an
example of how xinetd.conf is configured to use oidentd as a service?
Also, I'm loading the irc module in my ipchains rules, but I don't have
any special rules to accept, reject or redirect traffic in regard to
ports 113 or 6667 which are commonly used with irc. As I understand
things, loading the irc module takes care of the port issues. If
anybody has ipchains examples for use with irc, I'd appreciate any
example ipchains.
Thanks,
Mike

this depends on your distro. each distro put init stuffs differently.
basically you want the ethernet to get up and running right after
boot. you need to check your distro's docs.

configurating X can be done independent of distribution. if you don't
have XF86Setup on your machine, use xf86config . these programs will
allow you to set up your X to have multiple resolution.
before you start, be sure you know your video cards. chipset. be sure
to copy the horizontal and vertical sync rates from NEC website.
thing should go smoothly, as you got a pretty good monitor.

mount the windows partition and copy it to your linux partition.
something like this:
mount -t vfat /dev/hda0 /mnt
this will mount the /dev/hda0 partition under /mnt. so you just copy
it.

you have not provided much useful diagnose information, so let's
see...
1. have you looked at the file /tmp/kfm-cache-0/index.txt ? is it a
non writable file? it looks like a temp file for k file manager.
2. I am not sure if startx will find the right script to execute KDE.
try running kdm instead.
3. KDE simply runs too many programs when it starts, so it's hard to
know which part went wrong. I don't run KDE so you gota ask in some
KDE groups for help.
another thing worth trying: when "it freezes", try to jump back to the
virtual terminal by Ctrl-Alt-F1 to Ctrl-Alt-F6 . There, you will be
able to do a "ps ax" to see what programs are running. so you will
know if X is running, and what other k** are running.. maybe you'd
figure out the problem from there. you can then kill whatever you
think isn't working.
hope that helps.

Hi, Colin :)))
I really can't give good advices as much as it concerns Linux (sorry, it's
only my second attempt to master this OS :)).
The difference in behavior when installing I think results from the
difference in versions we use. Probably you need to find an utility which
can read and save the master boot record somewhere ...and then you can
compare is the MBR is altered after you install Linux. In my case, you see,
the MSB is locked. I'm wondering as well how it is possible in the time of
installation (when NT is not loaded and therefore cannot protect anything).

I think the mechnism is similar to that used by Windows NT. Likewise the
Linux installer saves the pervious version of MBR somewhere (look at
bootsect.dos which allows to start msdos when you don't want to start NT)
which in its turn enables selection between NT and DOS, for instance.
P.S. My version of RH Linux as well makes me experience troubles with
videosystem. It does not support ASUS 3800 Vanta Combat :(((. So, there is a
gigantic area for investigations ...
Good luck!
Sincerely,
Igor

If the hardware is similar enough, you should be able to copy a working
Linux partition and then just adjust some final settings. Compile the
kernel with as many modules as you can (for hardware differences).
A very good program for backuping/resoring/copying partitions is Partition
Image at http://partimage.sourceforge.net/. It's beta but very stable; I
use it myself.
Depending on your distribution, you may able to save the installation
configuration and reuse it on each computer. This is better if you don't
have a permanent fast connection between these computers. I know SuSE can
do it but not very well; I don't know about the others.
Good luck

When you mount a prtition as "msdos", it does just that - like MSDOS, it
doesn't recognize long filenames. Mount it as type "vfat" (virtual fat) and
it should be ok.
Hope that helps,
Dan Armak
