how DOES one use SANE? I've found few programs that don't give a lot of
errors when I toy with scan options, and I would imagine one'd have to
first tell SANE where to look for the scanner, no?

My friend... you must now enter the strange and often dangerous (to your
sanity) world of .... Samba.
~shakes head~ I'm sorry to tell you that.. but it's true. Unless you have
Corel Linux.. it likes Samba a LOT... but then again Corel WAS trying to make
a linux distro that was as windoze as possible.

The last version of X11Amp I ever had was quirky with MP3s.
And KMP3 and whatever that other one was that is in Mandrake 7.0's kde
menu's multimedia tab are strange too.
The best one I've found thus far is called XMMS, it's like X11Amp, on
steroids.
But of course there's also the possibility that the noise is simply your
speakers or the fact that the MP3s weren't ripped properly

You'd better stick to light-weight X clients, but if you insist, and
if you are running xdm or gdm or kdm and accepting xdmcp connections
(you can turn this on in gdm with the line "Enable=1" in the [xdmcp]
section of gdm.conf), then you can run
vncserver -query my.host.name
(you also need to have an empty xstartup script then).
You've been warned: it is SLOW.

I;ve been using linux for awhile now, and have figured out most every
little funky quirk and bug, at least as far as RH and Mandrake are
concerned.... save 2.
The one that annoys me the most is that when I remotely telnet to my
system it doesn't broadcast color ANSI.. it does a bit more of a raw,
b/w text thing. Is there no way to change this? I'd like to telnet
into my machine and see both color, and things like midnight commander
and all that.
The other confusion is that, I've heard Winderz32 can actually manage to
somehow run an Xwindows session remotely through telnet or something.
Some people have said they doing simply by putting in the config.sys
DISPLAY=24 others say it involves various x commands...... I guess I
just need to know 1) is it possible. 2) how is it accomplished with
Mandrake 7.0?

you need linux to start in init level 5.
edit your /etc/inittab file.

Check to see if the RAID patch is installed. It can be got from
http://people.redhat.com/mingo/raid-patches/
I was having similar problems with boot on raid after upgrading a
Mandrake distro to 2.2.16. I discovered that MDK had added a RAID patch
to the kernel which has not been integrated into the kernel tree.

I've looked up a file ifcfg-eth0 like someone suggested, and nothing

I did ifconfig and it gave a loada info, including RX packets:14090, TX
packets 12, txqueulen:100 Interrupt:15, Base address:0x200 MTU:1500,
Metric:1 with other values at zero.
i looked at the previous replies to network unreacable and tried
ifconfig up and down, and it did nothing.
The folder /lib/modules containts only a folder 2.2.13/
If you have any ideas, please help! i'm very inexperienced with Linux.

According to the lilo user's guide, stopping after "LI" means that the
second stage of the boot loader could be loaded, but not executed.
The Message 0x80 indicates a hd timeout. This could mean that there's
a geometry mismatch when adressing the disk. I never ran into that problem
myself, but maybe - since you have a rather large hd, changing your
bios/standard-cmos settings might help: Try changing the "mode" of your
hd from "Large", "Auto" or whatever to
"LBA".

Subject: basic networking problem
Date: Mon, 26 Jun 2000 14:49:37 -0400
I am trying to configure 3 Linux computers to be networked to each other.
Two of the machines are networked. I can ping each from the other. One of
the machines is not on the network i.e. not pingable. I have been trying to
ping using ip address. The two machines are setup using these parameters in
ifcfg-eth0 :
name: home
ip address 172.16.1.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcase 172.16.1.255
network 172.16.1.0
name: neil
ip address 172.16.1.5
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcase 172.16.1.255
network 172.16.1.0
The computer not on the network is configured as such (in ifcfg-eth0):
name: alpha
ip address 172.16.1.9
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcase 172.16.1.255
network 172.16.1.0
The network card in the non working machine seems to be working. The light
on the switch is on and when I ping it blinks. One of the working machines
has a 100 mps card and one has a 10 mps card and both are 3com (3c509 I
think). The non working is also a 10 mps 3c509 and I have tried the cards
from the working machines as well. I have triple checked all of the network
cables. My question is: If I were to setup a Linux box to be accessable to
a network, all I need to do in order to ping the other computers is set up
ifcfg-eth0 correctly. Is this right or am I completely missing the boat.
The other machines were set up 2 months ago by me. They are also running
samba but the samba service is not started. Please help, I have put in at
least 19 hours just trying to get this one machine on the network.
Thanks for your help.

im trying to get his card to work with mulinux. I think the driver I
need is lance.c, i saw lance.o in the slackware distro. My question is,
how do I compile this module into the mulinux kernal? I think its just a
matter of doing a make config on the kernal it has now, and then doing a
make module or whatever command it is to make the nic module compile. I
have read all the how-tos(including the one that came with muLINUX) and
still cant figure it out. If you can just lemme know exactly which
driver I need for this card, and the exact command to type and in what
directory(of the module) to type it in to get the module to make with my
kernal that would be enough. mulinux is a small distro of linux that
fits on a floppy disk and still has support for samba, ip masq, etc. The
reason it fits on a floppy is because everything is loaded as a module i
think and they only put the basic generic drivers on there. ALso, do i
need to probe this card to get the io address, etc before i can get it
to work? thnks in advance,

Try using linuxconf. And if you have a DHCP server, then you'll need
to make sure your ethernet card is setup to get its ip address from
DHCP - linuxconf will help you with this. Otherwise, if no DHCP, then
you need to assign a valid address manually - and again, linuxconf will
usu. take care of everything for you. Or use "netconf" which is a sub-
part of linuxconf.

This employment offer that you present lacks credibility.
A few reasons for this opinion are:
You use of the term "peecee" for the common computer term "PC" (Personal
Computer) this may be the result of lack of experince in the computer field,
OR you are attempting to present yourself as different persona then your
true identity.
There is a Hollywood, Florida near Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, your wording of
the locations makes it seem as though you are trying to appear less familiar
with the area than you in fact may be.
Then there is the ISP factor. Someone with a less than critical eye may
read your offer and think that you are located in Florida. However, I
believe you are located in the New York state in or near New York City.
Your email address is from Netmonger Communications, which is a small ISP
based in Bellmore NewYork. Netmonger Communications is so small or starved
for resources that it not able to provide a second authortive DNS server on
its own hosts. It's second authoritive DNS server is a DNS server run on a
host of Telecon Communications/Superior Net. Telecon Communications/Superior
Net is another ISP based in New York, in this case Johnstown New York.
However, you didn't connect to the internet through either of those ISP's.
Your connection was established through a third ISP located in New York
City, by the name of PANIX Public Access Networks Corporation. This ISP has
local dialup numbers for New York City, some other areas in New York outside
of New York City, and some area of New Jersey as well.
Your offer specifies Debian for your Linux distribution, you have
crossposted your offer into three Linux newsgroups but into none of the
debian specific newsgroups. Also since you are seeking professional and/or
expert support, there are newsgroups where you can advertise for the
services of computer consultants, you also did not crosspost into those
newsgroups either.
There is one more thing that can cause someone to doubt your offer's
credibility. This offer of yours is the only usenet newsgroup posting you
have made to date with this identity. This makes it appear that you may
have just created this on-line identity of [EMAIL PROTECTED] for the purpose
to make this one offer, perhaps for some ulterior motive.
These are some of the reasons that I find your offer to not be credible.

I take it you are wanting email to under1sun.com to go to your machine
"mail.under1sun.com" instead of to (at present) "cobalt.namezero.com"?
I think you should not do this. First, you are using a dialup connection so
for most of the time "mail.under1sun.com" will not be available to accept
email from anywhere else. Second, to have email come to "mail.under1sun.com"
you need to have changed the DNS MX record and it is unlikely your ISP will
do this for a dialup user. Third, even if have your ISP "store and forward"
email for you while you are offline, it seems a whole lot of work for very
little reward.
If you want to experiment with SMTP and POP3, I suggest you use fetchmail to
retrieve email from cobalt.namezero.com and put it in mail.under1sun.com.

Kindly advise how to use the fetchmail?

Subject: Re: A kppp question?
A couple of things to check:
* /dev/modem is probably a soft link to the real device file for your
modem. It is possible that you may need to set the proper read-write
priviliges on the file /dev/modem points to.
* Double check that pppd has the suid bit set.
* You may need to set the suid bit on kppp as well
% chmod u+s `which kppp`; ls -l `which kppp`
* If I recall correctly you may need to turn off the lockfile option
for pppd. This can be done by editing /etc/ppp/config (going from memory
here.)
* If you still have trouble check your logfiles. As root look at the
end of the file /var/log/messages. The pppd daemon writes logging
information to this file.
* finally check out the kppp documentation that came with your system.
You can find it from the kde help system by looking for info on
kde applications.

Subject: Montego II soundcard and Redhat 6.2
Date: Mon, 26 Jun 2000 19:48:16 GMT
I just installed Redhat 6.2 on a Dell machine that came with a Turtle
Beach Montego II A3D PCI soundcard.
I can't get this soundcard to work in Linux.
After searching around, I found that the driver I needed to use was at
linux.aureal.com. I downloaded that driver and tried installing it.
Here's the message I get attempting to run make install20:
=======
make install AUCHIP=AU8820
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/au88xx-1.0.5'
mv -f /etc/conf.modules /etc/conf.modules.old
gawk -f mod_conf /etc/conf.modules.old > /etc/conf.modules
echo "alias sound au8820" >> /etc/conf.modules
echo "alias midi au8820" >> /etc/conf.modules
mkdir -p /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc
cp -f au8820.o /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc
/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe au8820
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc/au8820.o: init_module: Device or resource

/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc/au8820.o: insmod

/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc/au8820.o: insmod au8820 failed
make[1]: [install] Error 255 (ignored)
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/au88xx-1.0.5'
=====================
The README said that these 'Device busy' errors may be fixed by turning
off Plug N Play in the BIOS; but PnP is off in my BIOS and I still get
the error.
I've read a few places where people are successfully using this card
with RedHat 6.1.
Does anyone have it working with Redhat 6.2?
Thanks in advance for any help.
