I have used the append statement in lilo.conf to set the ide bus speed
of my machine. Well worthwhile if you can. According to the man page
there is no harm done if you set it to a higher speed than your
motherboard supports anyway here is what my lilo.conf looks like:
boot = /dev/fd0
compact
timeout=0
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
  vga = normal
  append = "idebus=66"
  read-only

image = /boot/vmlinuz
  label = linux
  root = /dev/hdb1

Yes you will need to run the command 'lilo' for your settings to take
effect.

Thanks for the terse instructions but I forgot to say that this is my first
Linux instalation.I'm a real newbie.

Do you mean by your instructions that I should install Linux on thesecond
machine, then simply untar a copy of the first machine? If so I know this
approach is flawed simply because differences in the video card and monitor
will cause the Xconfig files not work on the backup machine ....

Thanks for the info! I forgot to mention however that I'm totally new with
Linux. I assume what what you recommend that I should install Linux on the
backup machine first .... but then I'm unclear as to how to copy "partition"
from one machine to another.

Any more information you have would be great!

I've gotten around a similar problem by letting Windows write to the
root partition of the drive and therefore being the 'default' operating
system.
I have also configured /etc/lilo.conf to boot from a floppy by using the
statement boot = /dev/fd0

In practice my machine now runs windows with the floppy out and linux
with the floppy in.

This also gets around 2 other problems. Any time you re-install Windows
it would otherwise clobber your harddisks boot secotor. Having linux
boot off a floppy is a lot quicker than windows. It efectivly only uses
the floppy to see where to load the kernel from.

I got a 32 Mb of RAM, they says that Linux use quiet little memory (RAM)
than Windows.
But after I have Linux installed yet, I found that Windows proceed
execution (running Programs), faster than Linux. Linux use 98% of my RAM.
How do I reduce it?

Do you have it using the imps/2 protocol or the ps/2 protocol.
Probably the last one, and it should be the first.

OK thanks for the tips guys. First up, I didnt know you hav eto run lilo -v EVERY time
you complie the kernel.

By this I mean I have installed 2.2.17 quite afew times to get sound etc working. The
image remains the same so I

didnt always bother with lilo -v after the first initial 2.2.17 compilation.

Root space. Well its in /dev/hda2 and it hovers from around 77-92 percent. When I get
the time I then move my large

data and MP3 files to one of the other partitions which are well below 50percent full.

This freeze up thing. This has been happening since I got the puter setup 10 months
ago. It quiet literally just freezes

and there is NOTHING I can do. NO ctrl-alt-del, or alt-f1 etc etc. I have to press
reboot and go through fsck. But a couple

of days ago I was startng to think that maybe it is X (one of you suggested this). I
have the intel i810 and when initially

setup I wasnt able to get the support for it in the kernel (I only found out yesteday
that device drivers for this had in fact

come out a couple of months before buying the i810). So I have just been running with
a 'general' er thingy in the kernel;

same with the video card which is on loan from a friend and is rather old (I disabled
the onboard graphics card and used this

video card instead).

Hi :-)

you did not tell which NIC ( Network Interface Card) you are using.

In some cases you need to compile a new kernel with support for the nic.

( I am not 100% sure about that because I used a http-install for my
SuSE as well as Mandrake and the network is configured in the beginning
of the install)

Another problem could also be that your NIC has PNP enabled, ( even
though some Kernels
include PNP support nowadays, you still would need to check on that)

I hope you don't mind this link

Riyaz's file, I wanted to take a look at it, so I could advise him on
what to change, to (hopefully) get a higher resolution. With XFree4.0
the X-server stuff has changed, so it might be so that the driver for
his card simply doesn't allow more than the resolution he's getting.
There should be info on this on the XFree86.org site though. Riyaz shoul
dcheck there first, and if there's no such limitation with the driver
for his card, he should come back here, and post his XF86Config file, if
he wants more help.

If you want help on your XF86Config file, you could post it too
ofcourse, but I don't need it for my own use (Which you probably
thought), my setup works fine (after some manual adjusting of this file)

It chooses the server where /etc/X points to (this is a symlink to the

Maybe you cannot imagine, but I really *love* the TWM window manager.
In my job I have to work with Solaris, and at home I want "something
completely different".

But who on earth knows the golden tip to clean up the .twmxxx files?
If I remove them manually, the total screen configuration gets lost!
