Subject: RH7: fdomain not reentrant?
Date: Thu, 09 Nov 2000 21:00:53 GMT

I am trying to install RH7 on a number of older machines. All of them
are nearly identical and have Adaptec SCSI cards. When the
installation begins, RH7 loads the fdomain driver and is all fine and
dandy. The disk formats go fine, but during the package installation I
receive a kernel panic telling me that the "fdomain driver is not
reentrant". I have tried an advanced installation so that I could
specify another SCSI driver, but none of the rest will proceed past
that point (not suprised...).

Any suggestions on how to proceed are appreciated.

Thanx,

The common wisdom is that you should not try to patch the Kernel source that
came with Red Hat. You should download the official Kernel Source from
kernel.org.

However, if you open the patch with a text editor you will note that the
third line (starts with "+++") refers to a directory. The one which I have
refers to: linux-2.2.16.c. You need to make a link with that name to the
base of your source tree for Patch to work by itself.

Subject: gcc / kdevelop1.2 problem and Linux in General

Hi all

I thought i'd give this kdevelop a go but after installing the source I
then tried compiling only to find that gcc didn't work - how does one
get this to work ? and there doesn't seem to be any info/manuals about
this !

I tried the old helloworld .c program and it said it couldn't find
stdio.h - yet it is in my system.

I must admit after trying also to get the Java - mysql jdbc stuff to
work ( to no avail). I'm getting pretty fed up with Linux from a
developing view point until there are easier ways of installing and
putting packages on that work 1st time or nearly 1st time then I think
that Linux will never get going properly.

I have a relatively new (purchased this past summer) Sager laptop
(dual boot setup) that worked fine with RH 6.2. I just upgraded to RH
7.0, and when it tries to configure the Yamaha sound card chip set, it
fails. When it boots into Enlightenment, it freezes when I try to run
applications (no way out except to power down, with the attendant boot
delays each time).

Anyone know what the problem might be?

There is a binary Perc raid driver available at support.dell.com that

Subject: Maintaining similar file systems between two computers?
Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 00:41:41 GMT

Hi

I want to be able to maintain the same file system on two computers.
One is at home and the other one is in my office.

Basically, I start with identical files systems on both machines. At
the end of every day I want to be able to run an incremental backup
onto a zip disk and take it home. I untar everything from that zip disk
onto my home computer. Once I am done working at home, I want to run
another incremental backup onto a zip disk and bring it to work. It
sounds simple, but I have not been able to do this. The log file
created during tar -g on one computer does not seem to apply to the
other computer. When I do an incremental backup, it backs up
everything, not just the recently changed files. Is there something in
the logfile that makes it apply only to the computer on which it was
created?

Any suggestions on how to get around this?

Check that you also have IDE/ATAPI CDROM support compiled in, or are
loading the ide-cd module at boot time.
Check for boot-time messages for detection of hdc. I get 2 parts, once
when the IDE driver loads and scans, like:
kernel: hdc: <model>, ATAPI CDROM drive
and two more lines when ide-cd loads, like:
kernel: hdc: ATAPI 32X CD-ROM drive, 128kb cache
kernel: Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision ...
Finally, I know this is dumb but I've done it, make sure the secondary
IDE channel isn't disabled in the BIOS.

Probably because Linus can't call 100,000 hardware makers and scare them
by saying "if you don't give me full documentation on your products, then
100,000,000 PCs around the world won't be able to use it."
