Go to the configuration section. Links there to the Ethernet HOWTO, and
other URLs that might help. Normally this is just a matter of knowing
which module to load. But sometimes it is not that easy.

RH7 does come with rp-pppoe, if your ISP is shoving PPPoE on you. You'll
need to know this at some point.

Hi all-

this must be a FAQ, or so obvious it doesn't bear talking about, but I
am stumped.

I have a laptop with RH6.1 (with all updates, including the kernel), and
I've just gotten a DSL connection, which is up and running with rp-pppoe
(although I suspect this problem would exist with plain modem ppp).

This is an intermittent dsl connection, with dynamic IP.

I've given my machine its own hostname. The ISP has a mail server, but I
want the machine to look like my work address as far as sendmail is
concerned, not my ISP address.

The question (I think) is: what do I do about this hostname in
/etc/hosts (and possibly other setup files, like sendmail.*)?

If I leave it out of /etc/hosts completely, many things work, but in
particular httpd fails on startup and more importantly a lot of pam
authentication fails, since you can't look up the host name correctly.

If I use what I think is intended as a private ip address (192.168.x.x),
pam stuff still fails.

In these setups, sendmail, even through an SMTP host fails.

If I give an address which happens to coincide with an IP address I used
to connect the machine to at work, nearly everything seems to work, but
I shouldn't use this address since it's not mine!

Any hints?

Andrew

I know I had some problems when I was using a 2.2.12-20 kernel. I don't
remember if it is exactly what you had below. I got a 2.2.16-4 kernel
that had patches to work with ipvsadm and that fixed the problem.
This kernel and an updated ipvsadm are still available at redhat
(I don't remember exactly where, but a google search can find it)
as of a couple a weeks ago when I needed to get a copy of the source
rpm so I could rebuild a copy with a larger random pool.

Another thing that you might need to do is use the -m option. I don't
know if gatewaying works if you are redirecting stuff to private addresses.

This is only true if the ISP is using PPPoE, which, while common, is a
long way from being universally true.

Hi,

I've got a Linux RH 6.2 machine with a 250M ZIP drive attached to the
parallel port. I've found how to install it manually, by adding

insmod parport
insmod imm

to /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Still, this works only if the drive is switched on at boot time.

I wonder if there is a smart way to play with conf.modules in such a way
that the modules would be loaded only when a user actually tries to access
the device (i.e. /dev/sda4), for example by mounting the drive.

any hints would be appreciated,

The default MTA in Debian Potato is EXIM and I had to answer some
questions durin installation process. I didn't know what to answer
exactly, so I need some help from you because my english is not good
enough to understand some of these questions.

What is the `visible' mail name of your system? This will appear on
From: lines of outgoing messages.
Enter value (default=`debian', `x' to restart):

Does this system have any other names which may appear on incoming
mail messages, apart from the visible name above (debian) and
localhost?
By default all domains will be treated the same; if you want different
domain names to be treated differently, you will need to edit the config
file afterwards: see the documentation for the "domains" director
option.
If there are any more, enter them here, separated with spaces or
commas.
If there are none, say `none'.
Enter value (default=`none', `x' to restart):

All mail from here or specified other local machines to anywhere on
the internet will be accepted, as will mail from anywhere on the
internet to here.
Are there any domains you want to relay mail for---that is, you are
prepared to accept mail for them from anywhere on the internet, but
they are not local domains.
If there are any, enter them here, separated with spaces or commas. You
can use wildcards. If there are none, say `none'. If you want to relay
mail for all domains that specify you as an MX, then say `mx'
Enter value (default=`none', `x' to restart):

Obviously, any machines that use us as a smarthost have to be excluded
from the relaying controls, as using us to relay mail for them is the
whole point.
Are there any networks of local machines you want to relay mail for?
If there are any, enter them here, separated with spaces or commas. You
should use the standard address/length format (e.g. 194.222.242.0/24)
If there are none, say `none'.
You need to double the colons in IPv6 addreses (e.g.
5f03::1200::836f::::/48)
Enter value (default=`none', `x' to restart):

You may want to filter out unsolicited commercial email, (UCE, also
known
as spam). Unfortunately it is difficult keeping up with all the spamming
sites and abused relays.

The Realtime Blackhole List is a spam filter that someone else maintains
(see http://maps.vix.com/rbl/). They are very quick to add sites, so
if you bounce on this you may occasionally miss legitimate mail. Adding
a header is an alternative---then individual users can choose what to do
with RBL mail using their personal filter files.
Note that the RBL only works if you receive mail directly. If it is
stored
for you at your ISP, the RBL won't work as it depends on the IP address
the
connection comes from.
Would you like to use the RBL? ('f'ilter, 'r'eject, or 'n'o)?
Enter value (default=`n', `x' to restart):

Which machine will act as the smarthost and handle outgoing mail?
Enter value (`x' to restart):

Mail for the `postmaster' and `root' accounts is usually redirected
to one or more user accounts, of the actual system administrators.
By default, I'll set things up so that mail for `postmaster' and for
various system accounts is redirected to `root', and mail for `root'
is redirected to a real user. This can be changed by editing
/etc/aliases.
Note that postmaster-mail should usually be read on the system it is
directed to, rather than being forwarded elsewhere, so (at least one of)
the users you choose should not redirect their mail off this machine.
Which user account(s) should system administrator mail go to ?
Enter one or more usernames separated by spaces or commas . Enter
`none' if you want to leave this mail in `root's mailbox - NB this
is strongly discouraged. Also, note that usernames should be lowercase!

I have tried the following strategies:

1. aliasing my chosen hostname to 127.0.0.1 localhost in /etc/hosts

3. giving my hostname what I think is intended as a private ip address

4. giving my hostname an IP address I used to connect the machine to at work

For each of these, some combination of various things seem to fail:

a. sending mail (the sending host appears not to exist, or occasionally
   it just disappears!)
b. PAM authentication
c. httpd activation

I'm probably just doing one or two really stupid things, but I can't
figure it out.

Any hints?

Hi Vivek,

This is a common problem with older MSI bios'es.

First, download and install the latest bios for your
motherboard at

             http://download.msi.com.tw/bios/mainboard/6xxx/6195/6195.htm

If that doesn't work, add the following to the top half
of your "/etc/lilo.conf"

      append="mem=131072K"

And, re-run "lilo". Correct any error messages and
reboot.

Good luck!

Yes it DOES (you win the false statement of the week prize).

Of course it only is the DEFAULT run level. The one you boot into.
