Subject: Loadlin is unable to set network adapter's IRQ when booting from Win98SE!
Date: Sun, 8 Apr 2001 14:29:25 +0200

I installed Win and Linux (Suse 7.0) on my secondary machine. Lilo is in
MBR but aditionally I wanna be able to start Linux from Winblows. To do
this I installed Loadlin and the Linux Kernel I usually boot with Lilo on
my Winblows partition.

Now when I shutdown windows and select 'Start in MS-Dos mode' (I do not
use a DOS-box!) the 'dosstart.bat' calls up my 'loadlin.bat' and Linux
boots up. However, I get the message:

SIOCSIFFLAGGS
SIOCSIFFLAGGS
resource temporarily not available

and realize that my network adapter (Accton Cheetah, Realtek chipset)
does not get installed. After login I used 'dmesg' to read the boot
messages and that's what I get:

rtl8139.c:v1.08 6/25/99 Donald Becker
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html
The PCI BIOS has not enabled the device at 0/72! Updating PCI command
0001->0005.
rtl8139.c:v1.08 6/25/99 Donald Becker
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html
eth0: SMC1211TX EZCard 10/100 (RealTek RTL8139) at 0x5800, IRQ 0,
ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff.

So it looks as if IRQ 10 that the card used flawlessly in Windows just
before shutdown, somehow does not seem to be available anymore.
After a 'real' reboot I can use the card on this IRQ without any problems
both in Linux and Windows.

To me it seems that Windows does not 'release' that IRQ so that it's not
available to Linux afterwards. Is that possible?

For a test I disabled 'PNP OS INSTALLED' in my BIOS and I also assigned
IRQ to the PCI slot the network adapter resides in. But I still do not
get this IRQ for the network adapter. I even used loadlin to hand over
some initialization parameters to the kernel like

loadlin vmlinuz ether=10,x0d000,eth0 root=/dev/hda6

but still no succes. Any ideas? TIA!

Hello,

the Linux installer should detect the not partitioned part of the disk.
RedHat for instance provides 2 tools during the installation: Disk Druid and
FDisk, I prefer DiskDruid. There you'll see ALL your partitions, and you can
add the desired Linux partitions.
For accessing DOS-/Win-partitions from Linux, there are the mtools for
example (mentioned as DOS connectivity during installation).

I hope this was a little help.

There's nothing wrong anywhere.
There are just a few things:

In your BIOS you've setup that you boot from hde?
You got these results from booting through the bootfloppy?
If so, run `/sbin/lilo -v` again.

yah the bootdisk does work now. Windows did boot before I installed
Linux, although I had to redo the fdisk /mbr in order to get it to boot
again.

hdg5 is my root (/) partition. Should it be /boot instead? I didn't
think so, though I think I did try that on one occasion since writing the
bootloader to the mbr didn't seem to work. Hmm.. i've been leaving the
bios to boot to IDE drive (which only occured to me now to be wrong since
no drive is actually connected to the UDMA66 ports so I'm probably not
specifying anything and it just defaults to channel 1 on the Promise) I
know this because when i've previously installed the 2 OSes separately
it'll boot windows on channel 1 rather than the linux.

Those were from the bootfloppy. I'll go try that now.
Thanks for the tips!

Check to make sure that your driver doesn't exist in the expert mode (although
this is normally more SCSI devices rather than network devices). Here is the
drivers.img file for Redhat 7.0:

You might like to take a look at the program called "SAMBA". You can find out
more information by reading the HOWTO's at http://www.linuxdoc.org or by going
to their home site at http://www.samba.org.

Mere presence of gcc is not adequate. You also need to have installed
packages like binutils, libc development, etc.

More detailed error information should be at (the end of) config.log.
Please post the relevant part, if you want more advice.

I'm installing rh 6.2 and I'm looking for advice on partition size. The
machine is going to be used as a server with a database, web server
(apache), and sendmail. I expect most applications will be installed on
/usr. I've got two disks a 3gb and 30gb and 128mb ram. How much disk space
should i devote to:
/
/boot
/usr
/home
/var
/opt
/tmp
<swap>

Thanks,

the first time you do this you might get an error(because the password file

Ah, but it DOES boys and girls! A very nice one too
since about 21.5 (get the latest 21.7!).

It will boot anything (except os2 on a logical)
anywhere on any size disk and, once and for all

" ...the cylinder-1024 limit is toast..."

The only catch is that most install utis still don't
splice the prerequisite 'lba32' switch into the config
so this has to be done by editing the lilo.conf file
and running lilo again from an installed Linux parti
unless you can modify the install floppy.

Another little FREE booter rising from skunkenvorken
somewhere in Germany (I think) is 'vpart' available
on 'hobbes'. Mainly of interest to os2-Warp users, it
happens to also offer a creation executable that runs
under either dos or doze (I forget which) to do the
required floppy (or mbr) choreography. Try it on a
floppy first of course. It hands over to the root
sector of wherever, so in the case of Linux you
would still need Lilo ready to catch it in the /.
If installed on a floppy, it gives you what most
Linux install floppies worth a dime would, the
ability to boot an installed Linux parti. But it
will also boot any other installed OS which few Limux
  install floppies are bothering with.

> Boot Magic, but then again, lilo doesn't need 3MB of space on a
> FAT partition, either...

A lot of people swear by Partition Magic and that
must say a lot; anyone with a canned-install of
Windows into a single C: and no CD has little
choice really. HOWEVER, when it comes to basic
system issues like booting (Boot Magic) I prefer
staying as close to the fire as possible so Lilo
  gets my vote.
