I don't seem to be having much luck recently. I had a hard disk with
Red Hat 6.2 installed. I want to put it into a different PC. The new
PC has NT4.0 service pack 5.0 running on it. I set up the NT no
problem, I added the Linux disk and booted from a red hat boot floppy.
The linux installation checked for new hardware which I went through and
for some reason now I can only get linux to boot up ??

I reckon I either screwed up the master boot record or somthing ele is
not quite right. If I disable the linux hard disk in the bios I get the
lilo loader coming up then a load of "070707070707070" on the screen.
I've had this before but that is another story. Can somone help me out
so I can get both linux and NT working on the same system thorugh lilo ?

Many thanks

No, there is no problem with xdm. If you have default runlevel 3 and
you reboot, then you will be in runlevel 3. If you have xdm set to
startup in runlevel 3, then that's your business, but it's not
debian policy. There should be no S??xdm link in /etc/rc3.d.

That said, there was a longstanding bug in the standard debian
setup (as far as I aware) that meant that xdm wasn't killed
automatically when LEAVING runlevel 4. I.e. there was a missing
K??xdm link. But that doesn't affect you.

This sounds like the classic old 'my harddrive is larger than 1024
cylinders'-problem. Also it could be a disk on a secondary IDE interface -
many BIOS'es won't let such disks boot...

Try to put 'lba32' in /etc/lilo.conf and rerun lilo.

If this does not help, make a small (~10mb) partition for /boot and rerun
lilo. Make sure the /boot partition is below the 1024 cylinder limit. Also
make sure it is on a disk bootable from the BIOS.

I've had similar problems with the Mandrake 7.1 installer- infinite loops
that is, in more than one location !!

It's a much better program than Red Hat's installer, but Mandrake really
needs to do some "TEST FOR FAIL" testing on this software before releasing
it, instead of playing "CATCH UP WITH THE OTHER LINUX DISTRIBUTIONS" !!

Subject: Problem with UFS drive on Adaptec 2940UW controller
Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 16:42:25 -0800

I have this very strange situation that just isn't working out for me. If anyone could
give me pointers, I'd be very appreciative.

I had two boxes, one with Storm Linux and one with Solaris 86 2.7. The Solaris box was
hacked into by a scriptkiddy and used to launch DOS attacks, so it was taken off the
network.

Now I want to get the data from the Solaris drive onto the Linux box. Rather than hook
the Solaris box back up to the network, we yanked the SCSI card (Adaptec 2940UW,
AIC7880P) and drive (Seagate 39173LW) and put it into the Linux box.

I ran modconf to add scsi_mod, sd_mod, and AIC7xxx support to enable the SCSI drive,
and added the UFS filesystem.

On reboot, the SCSI card was detected and the drive recognized. However, "mount -t ufs
-o ufstype=sunx86 /dev/sda1 /mnt/olddrive" comes back with a message about the
filesystem type being wrong or there being a bad superblock (which I don't believe
there is).

When I run "cfdisk /dev/sda" it recognizes the drive, but claims the entire thing is a
Linux Swap partition.

So does anyone have any ideas of where to go from here? I thought that perhaps the
card was a 2940UW Pro, which apparently isn't supported by Linux, but our supplier
claims this isn't the case. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for any help.

>How do I reduce it?

Check your swap partition size. It should be at least double that of
your RAM. Turn off all unnecessary/unused services (they should be off for
network security's sake anyway). There's not much else you can do if
you're running X-Windows. It's a memory hog, and 32M is pretty-much
running at the bare minimum. Even upgrading the CPU won't make much of a
difference without enough RAM to do the job. Until you increase your RAM
and/or lower the number of processes that are running, Linux/Windows will
be doing alot of memory swapping and slowing everything down to the speed
of your hard drives.

I have Kernel 2.2.16.

It says (in "menuconfig") that it has support for intel 820.

You may have a Kernel that doesn't have this built in, in which cause
you will have to build your own.

That version (6.1) isn't very secure, and the script kiddies have been
having a ball with it. So the first thing I'd do is update to either
6.2 or 7.0. 7.0 prefered.

Then, starting with (ISTR) kernel 2.2.16, used by 7.0, there should be
an emu10k1 driver available in /lib/modules/2.2.16-whatever.

A line in your conf.modules file like this:

alias sound emu10k1

should cause it to be loaded and made ready fairly early in the boot.

Later kernels have always had it available, the only exception to the
module version was 2.2.17 where I had to make it in the kernel to make
it work. From there, on up to 2.2.18pre21, its always there.

Cheers, Gene

Hi,

Not to answer my own question, but in case anyone
else gets burnt with this problem, here goes:

Red Hat 7.0's boot disk only contains a small sample
of scsi cdrom drivers needed to read your scsi cdrom drive.

To get access to the rest of the scsi drivers, you
have to make up your own floppy from an image
on CD-ROM #1. From Linux, you can use the
following command:

      dd if=/cdrom_mount_point/images/drivers.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=1440k

The images directory also has a DOS method of making
the disk as well.

Editorial comment: Red Hat should include this disk with
their distribution.
