See Documentation/binfmt_misc.txt in the Linux kernel source tree, which
allows you to do exactly this given a suitable wrapper script. Also see
Documentation/java.txt in any vaguely recent kernel (2.3.10 or later if
you want the newer scripts that do $CLASSPATH properly), or
<URL:http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~cjwatson/javawrapper/>; this may
work with .jar files, but I haven't tried it so you may have to hack
things a bit.

Im not sure whether the shutdown command is still
current. Try man shutdown.
shutdown -h now # this shuts er down now.
shutdown -h +5 # shutdown in 5 minutes.
is the normal command in most linux systems.
You must of course have apm compiled into the kernel.

Except he didn't use ANY version of fdisk to cause the problem...
Every version of linux fdisk I've seen warns about creating DOS
partitions. Stupid doze believes the header information at the start of
the partition over and above the partition table itself. So if the data
in the header is corrupt, bang goes the next partition...
My complaint about stupid doze fdisk is that, having *recognised* the
disk as having 790 cylinders, it created an extended partition ending on
cylinder 790, then put inside it a logical partition ending on cylinder
791. And no, linux fdisk went nowhere near the disk - indeed, the
closest linux got to that disk then was to blow away the partition table
(dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdd bs=1024 count=1). I thought it wiser to
give doze a blank partition table and it STILL screws up!!!!!

Hi
append="mem=128M"
Although I have added, then moved around, the above line in my lilo.conf file,
Linux fails to recognize the correct RAM capacity. Any suggestions? I use RH
6.2 and a floppy (where lilo.conf is) to boot from a loopback device in a
Win98 partition.

Ignore the broken pipe message (you got that because lpr quit). And lpr
quit because there is no printcap entry for your printer called "4300". But
I can't tell if your printcap is incomplete, or you didn't post all of it.
The first word (before the :) of any printcap entry needs to to be the
printer name, so yours should start with "4300:"
By the way, if you have only one printer, you might as well call
it "lp" which is the default for lpr.

Subject: Dialup in Gnome???
Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 02:40:58 GMT
Ok, I am using the new Helix Gnome desktop on Linux Mandrake 7.0. I
have a problem though, I can't get it to dial up to the internet only
when I am in that desktop. If I change into the KDE 1.1.2 desktop,
using kppp or using ifup command works great. But if I go into Helix
Gnome desktop and use the same commands, kppp or ifup, it dials up, but
it won't finalize the connection and then hangs up and then redials. It
will do that until I tell it to stop dialing.
I tried downloading some other dialers that were specifically makde for
gnome, but none of them work any better.
I also tried to use the applet that comes with gnome that goes in the
taskbar and you tell it to connect and it does nothing.
Any ideas!!!

Use the latest SuSE distribution with the most recent kernel.
I have a 40G Maxtor. Redhat 6.2 could not formatting the last 20G of my 40G harddrive.
Redhat 7.0 did format the last 20G of my 40G harddrive.
You don't need a new BIOS if you are only running Linux.
If you are running Windows and Linux, I would recommend you getting MaxBlast software
from the maxtor website.

When installing Linux (RH 7.0), what mouse should I select for a
Microsoft Intellimouse -- the kind with the scroll wheel? Can I get the
scroll wheel to act as a scroll wheel, or instead as a third mouse

When I installed RH 6.2 with the same mouse, I didn't see an option for
the Intellimouse.

There probably would not be so many questions if Linux distributors --
especially Red Hat -- did a much better job of documenting how to handle
this, especially with Windows NT and no FAT partition! I don't see why
they cannot include ALL the necessary instructions on accomplishing this
with their installation instructions instead of referring to complex
mini-HOWTO docs.
In fact, more generally this is one of the really frustrating things
about getting started with Linux -- one encounters what almost seems
like an infinite regress of links from one piece of documentation to
another. End of rant.

This doesn't seem to be a very popular set up anymore but I like it.
1. Get plain vanilla pppd stuff to work, see the ppp howto at
www.linuxdoc.org. With this you can connect at console with no GUI stuff
running at all.
2. Use one of the demand-pppd scripts (search Yahoo for them). The first
step will eliminate a lot of problems you may have if you go here first.
Now you really don't need any GUI tools, pppd will dial when an app looks
for a connection, and disconnect after a period of inactivity.
3. Use something like the modem lights applet if you want to see thru put
and/or manually disconnect. Use ppp-on/ppp-off if you don't use the demand
stuff. If you do the demand stuff use ping to connect and the script
comments should have the command to force disconnect.
