I believe ide devices can have up to 63 partitions. Never tested.

Yes, he must have mistranscribed something. But his log looked genuine,
no? Ask him to show the message again, paying particular attention.

If that is TRUE, then he has mistranscribed the log message, and
nothing can be construed from it.

Likely. It's "devfs=nomount".

Oh, OK. The uid and gid are not relevant (repeat). The problem is that it's
probbably got an immutable attribute set. Man chattr.

> I have tried adding a user with that Id, no go.

You really are fixated on this, aren't you! You could have discarded
that hypothesis by making another block device with the same modes
and owner and group, and deleting it! What stopped you performing that
test? It would have told you that none of the attributes you could SEE
were relevant.

> I am sure there is a neat way of handling these problems.

If the inode is really messed up, chattr won't work. You'll have to get
out debugfs and clear the inode contents and the directory reference.

Well, of course. Now you get the same chance to mess up, this time by
hand, with debugfs.

I suppose you never heard of the file attributes?
try `lsattr filename`, and you'll probbaly see an 'i' appear.
chattr -i will clear the immutable bit.

See especially the Ethernet-HOWTO. It has explicit instructions on

Okay, some simple questions to ask, what security mode does SAMBA think it is
in (user, share, server). I think you are probably either in user or share
mode at the moment. Additionally, what are the SAMBA logs reporting ?, is it
possible that SAMBA is trying to do a verification using its own smbpasswd
file which means that you need to create the user in the smbpasswd file
through the "smbpasswd -a" command.

This could be behind the username, password prompt that you are receiving.

See ya

From: Anonymous <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi all,

I would really appreciate some assistance and follow up. Configuration
details are below. And my thanks in advance to all that reply.

We have several new Supermicro 6010 L\H series servers. They work fine
until you add more than 2 DIMMs ram. Then for the life of us we can not
keep them running. See the set up information below. They are more
stable under a 2.2 kernel than a 2.4 kernel but not entirely so. Also,
we run Netfilter and MySQL so being able to take advantage of the 2.4
kernel is a priority.

Once installed they will not compile anything without seg faults and
core dumps. They kernel panics about every 4 to 8 hours and we have
been unable to figure out what is going on.

We get this on different machines and we have tried lots of processor,
ram and drive substitutions.

I have made sure that APM is on in the BIOS and CAS is set to 3. I have
been administrating linux for 3 years now but only on single
processor/IDE machines. So I am at a complete loss.

Is there anything else I might be missing? Distro, Ram, BIOS???

Sincerely,
Scott ES

Look at the settings in real player and see if something is set wrong.

Many thanks to all who gave tips!

Interesting note: My Win95 laptop logs in to Samba without a problem, so
I'm guessing this issue is due to a Win98 password encryption feature
which must be disabled in the registry. A PhD from Oz tipped me off to
this. No worries, mate!

Hello,

There are several ways to this. Example, if you wanted to rebuild the gcc
source rpm as i586 you would use this command:

rpm --rebuild --target=i586 gcc-2.96-80.src.rpm

Or you could first install the source rpm:

rpm -ivh gcc-2.96-80.src.rpm

then cd to the directory where the spec file is installed:

cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS

then use the following command to build the i586 binary rpm:

rpm -bb --target=i586 gcc.spec

Read the man page for rpm to see all the options that are available.

        Jim H

One possibility is that your partition type codes are set incorrectly.
When you do an "fdisk -l /dev/hdb" (assuming these are EIDE disks), you
should see type codes of 0x83 (or 0x82 for swap). If your Linux
partitions use any other type code, Windows may mistakenly (but
reasonably) trying to read them as FAT or NTFS. (If you use extended
partitions, those will have other codes, but the logical partitions
they contain should use Linux codes.) You can correct this problem from
within fdisk using the "t" command.

Another possibility is that the partitions HAD BEEN readable by Windows,
but it's not updated its own internal list. I'm not sure about Win2K,
but WinNT kept track of partitions itself, so changes to the
partitioning layout sometimes caused problems. The usual solution with
WinNT, if it would boot at all, was to load up the Disk Administrator.
That's usually enough to get it to re-read the partition tables. In
Win2K, Disk Administrator is part of the Computer Management tool.

A third possibility springs to mind: A bug in Win2K. If your disk has
only Linux partitions, then it's not the most common configuration
around. It's conceivable that Win2K has a bug that causes it to try too
hard to find a FAT or NTFS partition on a disk, and thus is choking on
this disk. This is sheer speculation, though; I don't know of such a bug
in Win2K, but it is conceivable. If it's the cause, you might try
creating a small FAT partition on the disk just to satisfy Windows.

Try putting a small dos or win partition on the linux drive.
Windows just cannot comprehend a drive that has stuff on it that does
not have win stuff on it. It seeks forever.

I don't really want another episode of the by now infamous vi/emacs holy war
but I simply can not abide an emacs fanatic calling vim "brain-dead"
without challenging it...

I can understand when someone who isn't "used to" vim or vi refusing to
believe that it's user friendly. I can accept that brain-dead people will
never find it easy to use. But to call it brain dead because you "can"
define wastefully small literal keystroke macros is unforgivable.

You can also ":map" some very useful shortcuts <see included examples from
my .vimrc... Note: the ^M in the actual .vimrc are actual <ctrl-M>
characters embedded by editing the file with vim and from insert mode
typing a ^V [ literally a <ctrl-V> ] followed by the Special keystroke
you want embedded ^V[Enter] yields a ^M >

Of course I exported the $snip And $spellfile variables from my .profile
And by default I set showmode so I don't have to remember if I'm in
command mode or not...

:map - :set ai textwidth=74 nonumber wrap
:map S :w^MG:r $spellfile^Mkd1G
:map T :w! $snip/tmp
:map _ :set noai textwidth=0 number nowrap
:map s :w^M:w! $spellfile^M:!ispell $spellfile
:map t :r $snip/tmp

      ` '
