I have a 6 GB HD (Laptop) and I want to dual boot Linux and Win2K. I have a fresh disk
to
install on so I don't have to save any data.
What's the best way to go about doing this? Which OS should I install first and how
should
I set up the partitions. I want about 2.5 GB for Windoze and 3.5 for Linux. I do have
Partition Magic.
Thanx

If you're running RH 6.2, there's nothing to do but set your raid config.
and run. The kernel and tools (if you installed them) are at the necessary
levels. AFAIK, RAID 0,1 & 5 work just fine. You'll be suprised how fast
software RAID is under Linux.
What Mylex controller you have that doesn't work under Linux?

Subject: Help me with my cable connection!

OK I will try to describe the problem as best I can.
I'm on a machine with a Kingston KNE100TX ethernet card, a SB3100 cable
modem, and my ISP is Adelphia Powerlink up in Maine.
In windows 98SE, network is configured automatically, and from running
winipcfg I was able to obtain my HostName (myname.mint.net), my primary and
secondary DNS servers, subnet mask address, default gateway address, and
DHCP server address. My IP is DYNAMIC I might add.
I first installed Mandrake 7.2 as lnx4win to try it out. Worked fine, but
had a few problems with networking. Miraculously, with entering a few of the
addresses above, I got my connection working!
So I was satisfied and uninstalled lnx4win, created a new partition, and
installed linux again. This time howerever, I cannot get my connection to
work!
When booting up, it says "Setting hostname MYNAME.mint.net OK" and shortly
afterwards "Bringing up interface eht0; delaying eth0 initiliazation. X".
What should I do? Somebody please help me I'm about to kick my PC!

Thanks for the Suggestion, I have already check that place out, and it is
good for getting everything installed, It will tell me what needs to be
installed and everything.. But they want to do it from a linux partition
that has already been installed, and create a new partition for the LFS..
But I want to do the installation from either a bootable CD or a Bootable
floppy, I just need to know what to Copy over to the Floppy or CD so I can
create a Bootable Partition on the HDD..
Thanks for the help

Just do an

Make a DOS boot diskette (For Windows 98 or earlier, open a DOS window and
type "format a: /s", then copy loadlin and the installed version of
vmlinuz to the disk. Add an autoexec.bat file with the single line:
loadlin vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 ro
"hda3" is because Linux is installed on partition 3 - this may be
different for your system.
The insert the floppy and reboot.

Whaaaat? The distribution doesn't support the processors, the kernel
does. Since all linux distributions by definition use the linux kernel,
all linux distributions support multiple processors (SMP).
Now, if you're talking about supporting SMP out of the box, that's
different. But recompiling your kernel is a good thing anyway. Chalk
it up as a learning experience.

hey Matt..... What version of Mandrake????
You should be able to open mandrake(hopefully you made boot disks too) and
go into Drakconfig and restructure your boot sequence to include
Windoze....If that doesn't work...create a boot disk for Mandrake or 2 and
then from the terminal run 'lilo -u' which will uninstall the boot manager
leaving only your windoze boot sequence. If you installed boot magic did you
not use the option to create rescue disks??? good luck

If memory serves me right...from the terminal in RH 'mkbootdisk' should do
the trick. Some distros require that you add the kernal you are booting

I'm not bashing Linux, but I don't think it's worth the hassles.
Everything has to be compiled, debugged, etc.
I could spend more time messing around with Linux than I
would getting some work done.
It runs nice, rarely crashes, and can run on a small amount of
ram.
But it is a big pain in the arse, to get it to work.
It's just not worth it.

Date: Sun, 19 Nov 2000 15:38:41 -0600
Hi, I just downloaded and installed MDK 7.2 to dual boot on my all scsi
system. I've got a problem, however, when the kernel gets to the scsi host
and drive probe stage. The kernel detects my adapter fine (Adaptec 2940UW),
and detects my harddrive correctly (all alone on channel B, id 0). After
that, it detects (incorrectly) a Plextor UltraPlex CDROM on channel A, id 3
and a Syquest Syjet on channel A, id 6. The syquest is correct, but the
cdrom is not. The kernel hangs at that point in an infinte loop and reports
a scsi bus timeout at channel A, id 3 every so often. The actual SCSI
configuration, as displayed by the SCSI BIOS at bootup, is as follows.
Channel B, ID 0 Harddrive 0
Chanel A, ID 2 Plextor UltraPlex CDROM
Chanel A, ID 3 Yamaha 6416S CDRW
Chanel A, ID 6 Syquest Syjet removable
I do believe on of the cdrom drives is at fault, but I'm not sure which. If
it's any help, after showing the Plextor CDROM incorrectly at ID 3, it
assigns that drive to /dev/sr0, which is usually the CDRW, correct? If
anyone could help, I would be very grateful.

Mine did that too, a couple of times and drove me nuts!!
Install will actually run, but you can't see anything so it makes for
an interesting install.
If I remember properly, do not test the xconfig during setup. I seem to
remember the display got corrupted afterwards, regardless of the settings.
I blew past that point and it ran well.

If you can successfully connect to your ISP, then you need a dialing program
that would do that for you automatically.
There is wvdial, but I prefer XISP. It is well designed, it is very user
friendly and it has extensive documentation.
Do a google search on XISP, or go to freshmeat.net and get it. Of course, you
need an internet connection for that, but since you're posting, I assume you
have some means to acces the net.
The ppp connection can be also configured in RH6.2 with
#control-panel &
then click on network configuration. This, however, won't allow you to dial as
user, only as root.

Date: Sun, 19 Nov 2000 22:06:48 GMT
Hey all,
I've been trying to compile the 2.4.0-test2 kernel in order to use the
USB ZIP drivers available from Iomega's website. At first I figured,
"well I'll just get the latest kernel", and got test9. That worked
fine, I got the kernel running with everything, but when I tried to
install the ZIP drivers it said "nope, test2 only". So I nabbed the
test2 kernel, tried to recompile, and got the following:
--- 8< ---

So that's it. I really don't understand these precomp definitions
(actually if anyone has the time/inclination, a little enlightenment
for interest's sake would be greatly appreciated as well, though not
critical!), so I'm just wondering if there is anything, oh anythingI
can do to get this kernel version compiled. It has to be test2,
according to Iomega.

If this box is connected directly to the internet, it could be caused by
one of the options -e or -o in the in.identd line your /etc/inetd.conf
file. Since -e should only affect errors, it is possible that irc does
not like getting UNKNOWN for your OS type. I removed both of those
options and then it works (don't forget to 'killall -HUP inetd' after
modifying that file).
If you are behind MASQ or firewall or even a router that masqurades you,
then you may need to do something else. But it should work from the
internet connected box regardless, unless you are blocking port 113.

Hi,
I just bought a computer with no software and I would like to install some
distributuion of Linux. Since I am completely new to Linux I want to buy
one of the distributions on CD. Now, which distribution should I buy? I
have read contradictory opinions on this, some claiming that Corel is
easier because it is the more similar to Windows. This doesn't not work
for me because I come from the Mac camp and have very little experience
with MSWindows. I have read a few reviews of Mandrake 7.2, but some people
told me that it wasn't very good for beginners. Others seem to like Debian
very much and have recommended it to me.
Second, I have looked for information about installing Linux, but what I
have read seem to assume that you have Windows installed. Do I have to
install Windows first?
Thanks,

Thanks for reply.
1. I installed NS6 in /usr/local/netscape. /usr/src/netscape is my type
error.
2. /usr/local/netscape/Cool does exist.
3. Installations for both PC are the same, I didn't check out the env
yet. This should taken care by NS6 installation, right? BTW, which ENV
do u think may cause any problems?
4. I gave up NS6. It simply sucks. No wonder it's beaten down by MS
easily.

Thanks for your reply!
1. I did run NS6 as root in the 1st time.
2. MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME and MOZILLA_HOME are empty after install NS6. After
export these 2 equal to the value you suggested, still get the same
error. So I don't want to try NS6 anymore.
3. Let's wait IE for Linux. Netscape is just too bad.

Subject: Web server setup problem
Date: Mon, 20 Nov 2000 08:50:47 +1000
I have a web server running Apache which is connected to the web
permanently.
I can browse the web via this connection. From the web people can ftp onto
the server send and receive email, ping the site. What they cannot do is
see my home page. The web server can be seen on the local network but not
via the PPP connection. The URL is : www.dka.net.au or 203.47.45.145
I have gone through many HOW'To's without success. Anybody had a similar
problem. What are the mininum setup requirements to get it to work
properly.
TIA
Lance
