I'm replying to the original message, but I've read all of it
so far.
Am I right in assuming that you have a 10.5 GB hard drive
intended for the system, a second hard drive for files,
not currently installed, a CDROM, and enough knowledge of
the previous Linux system to re-create it? If so, then:
Ditch the idea of having Linux on the same drive as the rest.
It won't work, for various reasons, most having to do with
primary partitions. If you fiddle with it, it might work
anyway, but it's not worth the hassle.
Install Windows 98 on the first disk, using whatever config
you like. Don't use more than 4 GB for it, though, you'll never
use all that space anyway. Next, run NT4's setup, and install
in a second partition on the same drive. Use the rest of the
space for this.
Install the second hard drive, and insert your bootable Linux
CD in the drive. Configure your second hard drive as you please,
but since you're supposed to have your files on this drive, leave
the Linux partitions small (I have no idea how large this drive
is, but I'm assuming it's bigger than the other), like 3 GB total.
Leave the rest of the space free, _do not_ use linux to partition
them. When the linux setup asks you to configure LILO, add the
label Win98 (/dev/hda1) and WinNT (/dev/hda2). The rest of the
second drive should be partitioned and formatted using Windows
NT, in FAT16 format (this may or may not result in several large
FAT partitions, but it's necessary for compatibility). These
can be mounted under Linux, and read from both NT and 98.
If this works as I remember, then the different OS's shouldn't
even see each other, and only Linux can read from all three and
since it isn't bothered, it should be ok.
(Disclaimer: I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what happens when you
mix NT4's Service Pack 4 or later into this equation. These add
FAT32 support to NT4, and might make NT confused as to which hard
drive is C:. It might work anyway, in which case the large FAT
drives can be avoided and converted to FAT32 instead. This is due
to partitioning issues. It did work for me, back in the day...)

This is NOT a good idea. You should do this in a safer way (have root
get access to your machine). If someone was to read the packets of
your logging into your machine as root, they would then know your root
password, and could telnet in as well. SSH is one of the better
methods for doing this.
But, that not withstanding, if you power up your command line and look
at the man page for the securetty file (/etc/securetty), you will see
that this file lists the TTYs that root is allowed to login from.
Typically, this contains all the TTYs associated with all the virtual
terminals on your console.
P.S.: Do you think you sent this message to enough newsgroups?

You need to unpack the program from the
"setiathome-3.0.i386-pc-linux-gnu-gnulibc2.1.tar" file and then move
the "setiathome" program to the directory where you want to run it. Then
"cd" into the directory where you want it to run and do a
"nohup ./setiathome -nice 19 &" that will start the seti program and it
will
run until you stop it or shutdown the system at which time the next time
you boot the system you would have to restart it or use cron to start
it.

i've the following problem with my linux box : i'm able to get only the
local network, and to read only the web pages belonging to my domain (my
domain is elet.polimi.it, and i've no problem to read www.polimi.it).
When i try to get, for example, www.google.com, i get the error message
"network is unreachable".
I checked the DNS and the gateway configuration, and they seem to be
correct.
What can i do?

line options parport_pc io=0x378,irq=5 to my /etc/modules.conf file,

print anything. When I print any of the testpages from printtool nothing

Here is how I managed. I went under windows and copied the IRQ and the
I/O range that the BIOS has setup for my port. Then I went into Linux,
opened /etc/modules.conf and added a line ther that looks like that:
options parport_pc io=0x378,irq=5,auto
where io was the setting that windows gave me, and it's probably the
same for you, and irq is again what Windows told me. Then I rebooted and
the printer was detected properly with Printtool. However, for reasons
that I can't figure out yet, my printer still won't print. I hope this
helps you.

just installed Mandrake 7.2 on my Toshiba Tecra 500CDT. All went well

the screen but I'm not sure where.
Is there a way to edit the config to tell it where to find the screen if so
where/how do i do this. Are there any special settings i need to get my

(Preferably post to only one newsgroup. Otherwise you could be
considered as a spammer.)
Note that even if you do this, you expose your super-user password
to sniffers. If you do not want to make the job of crackers too
easy, you should not use telnet at all, but use ssh instead.

./the-bin-file -net (don't forget the dot before the slash)
using "-net" will set up the server installation

login into the user that you want to run staroffice
cd to /usr/local/soffice52/program
./setup (don't forget the dot before the slash)
(this will look like th server installation but it will ask for personal inf.)
To run the program:
./usr/local/soffice52/program/soffice

Right. It is a PNP card, using the RTL8019 chipset.
>and lists it as using the resources:

> I/O: 02A0h-02BFh
Irrelevant. This is PNP, and the operating system probably rearranges
this to its likings each time you change something.
>I'm running Redhat7.0 and it has the ISA NE2000 listed as 'module'. In the
>/etc/modules.conf file (which was renamed from /etc/conf.modules):
You'll need the driver for the RTL8019 chipset. This may or may not be
included in the ne.o module in RH7.0.

[...]
... and that's wrong. You'll first have to run
"pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf", since Linux isn't a PNP-OS.
Then edit the resulting file to be matching the settings that
Win98 uses.
(Or, even
better, use the utility that came with the card on a floppy to disable
PNP on the card, and set it up with fixed values for I/O address and
IRQ . Then disable the "PNP-OS" setting in your BIOS alltogether.)

Check again. It sounds like you don't have a default route to the
Internet.

cron mails standard output and errors to the owner of the cron job
(unless you defined the MAILTO field).
you can direct the standard output (File descriptor 1) and standard
error (file descriptor 2) to /dev/null. This will prevent cron from
send you email!
Example:
01 5 * * * /home/user/bin/backup_var.sh >> /dev/null 2>&1
