Hi, thank you guys for being helpful.
Being a linux beginner, I sometimes get stuck when I know I have to do
something but don't know the exact command to do it. So another question. Is
there anyway that I can have a reference to all the shell commands, like in
this case, to find out that the command for 'formatting' is 'mkfs'?

If there's no more entries in your logfile than these, you might
as well turn off your box ;-)).
SCNR - but seriously : these are only timestamps to indicate
that at least syslogd is alive, and to keep the logfile's
continuity. 20 min. is the default interval for this facility.

Actually what I did was download the 2.2.19 kernel from ftp.kernel.org. I
didn't realize that RedHat had added the VPN patch as an add on. They don't
seem to have 2.2.19 out on their site yet for RedHat 6.2. Thanks for your
help.

Did you just review your 2.4.2 settings or actually cp the .config to the
new kernel (which might or might not work if config changed)?

Check 'uname -a'. One thing that tripped me up is that the default
location for vmlinuz and System.map with a generic kernel is / and you
want it is boot. So you are likely still running your old kernel. See if
they are in / and mv them to /boot and rerun lilo. Then edit your kernel
Makefile to uncomment the /boot location.

SuSE 7.1 still had its kernel sources in /usr/src so that is what I used
and it works fine.

Hmm, there never was a /dev/eth0. Were you able to use eth0 with your old
kernel before (which module)?

Wrong kernel doesn't work with right modules.

How does one start ppp on the command line without the terminal being
compromised. I normally call ppp on the command line as follows:
pppd call my-isp
but when I do this the terminal is in use until the ppp session
is broken. The alternative to append a "&" at the end works
works somewhat but I still get output to the screen:
# Serial connection established.
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /device/modem
...
Is there a way to start ppp and have out of one's hair completely.
Thanks,

Do you try to login as root?
Disabled for security reasons on most distros per default.
Edit /etc/ftpusers to enable.
Anyway, use scp as root.

You can use one virtual terminal for ppp an another one for your
other things, so you don't have to see the messages, another
way is make a script that call pppd redirecting all the messages
into a log file using > logfile 2> logfile. The '2>' means
to redirect also the error messages.

/dev/hda5 is the first 'logical' partition in an extended partition. But
what you mean for 'reformatting' ? The swap partition doesn't need to
be formatted.
Try *not* create any swap partition for your system, maybe adding one
later is the solution (use mkswap and swapon).
I had something similar sometime ago, and finally I discovered that was
a problem with the 1024 cylinder...

Usually using CTRL/ALT/+ and CTRL/ALT/- you can increase or decrease
the resolution, however, if your configuration does not allow other
resolutions, these functions are useless.
Check your configuration in the XF86Config file and eventually
edit it.

Hallo world ! sorry for my english...
I've compiled the new kernel 2.4.2 with the support for the soundcard
ess-solo1 (my notebook is IBM 390x), and at the beginning the card played
good (my sistem, with SUSE 7.0, at the beginning is with X without windows
manager). Then I've installed the new version of Gnome, and now the card
play very slowly (as a 45 spin LP played at 16 spin !!). I've recompiled
kernel, I've compiled also the new version of kernel (2.4.3) but the card
play slowly also without Gnome !!
Why ?
Thanks a lot
