I have installed Linux on K6 233, K6-2/300, K6-2/400, K6-2/450, K6-2/500, and a
K6-III/450. Distro's used have been RH 4.2, 5.2, Mandrake 5.3, 6.1, 7.02. I

Check out the SANE site to see if your scanner is supported. I was able
to get my parallel port hp Scanjet 5100c going from the infomation on
their site.

when u start X do 'startx | more' and the output will be displayed on
teh screen page by page(when it works with root just exit X and you will
be able to see the output, press SPacebar to goto next page of output).
Do it for root and a regular userand see what scan lines are being used
in each case. OBviously the scan lines of xf86config file is too high,
or low, for your monitor (hence outof range)

I just modified my Cue Cat to read barcodes and spit out the numbers
without being scrambled. It works under windows or text based linux,
but when I run X windows(KDE or Failsafe mode), it does not work. When
I scan a barcode in X windows based text editor, the screen would just
give a few beeps and line feed. How do I get my modified Cue Cat to

Hi,
If you are using an internal ip range of private addresses you must use
masquerading for your internal net. Otherwise you won't be able to access
the internet.
Also check your default route.

the result is :

PING 216.115.108.243 (216.115.108.243): 56 octets data

ping: sent 64 octets to 216.115.108.243, ret=-1
sendto: Network is unreachable
I'm able to ping only the machines on the lan. Moreover, i think DNS are
correct (i checked them) . However outside addresses are unreacheables, even
with ping.

This has happened to me too. The problem is that the ntpd-server needs
some time to really "get up". The server needs upto 30 minutes until
it can be reached from other clients.
Just wait after starting ntpd and try again. BTW, you don't need to
change the options that come in the standard config file (except you
want to). It should run out of the box.

Yes, well, if you looked just a little bit further into that very same
Makefile, you would find a CC := gcc line which is the one you need to
change to kgcc.

I have configured my PC (RH 7.0) to have the console on ttyS0 (I don't
have a video card)
as described in the Text-Terminal-HOWTO and serial-console.txt (kernel
doc).
Everthing works (boot messages , login prompt...) but I lost the lilo

terminal but it seems not to take input from keyboard, so after timeout
it boots the default)..
Am I missing something? Any hints?

You did remember to put an option to ntpdate? ntpdate does (unlike
ntpd) not use /etc/ntpd.conf (or whatever it is called in debian).
It should be called as 'ntpdate <server>'.
I have a ntp server running, and it uses ntpdate just fine immediately
after ntpd has started.

At the LILO: prompt, press the TAB key. This will list the available

voila!
When you are interested in changing th default boot image, go look up

I have the same problem, I think that your default router is not

"route", if the default router not appear or default is not the ISP IP

I did a vi pattern match for gcc in the file, and only found the one.
I also grepped the whole source tree, and only found one other

I believe you're mistaken. I'd say I'm certain you're mistaken, but your
claim is pretty vague, so you may have something in mind that's correct
but at variance with my understanding of the situation.
To elaborate, it's certainly possible to install Win98, WinNT, and Linux
all on one physical hard disk. Win98 and WinNT both require primary
partitions, but Linux does not, so by themselves, these three OSs don't
come anywhere near the 4-primary-partition limit of the standard x86
partition layout. In fact, I'm typing this on a system with WinMe,
Win2K, and two versions of Linux all booting from the first physical
disk. (I've also got OS/2 and BeOS installed on a second physical disk.)
Even if you installed Linux on a primary partition, that would not
exceed the allotment (1 each for Win98 and WinNT, 1 for Linux, and 1 for
an extended partition to hold the logical partitions you'd be likely to
want in such a configuration).

You edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and then (one) equivalent
of running lilo is to start the grub shell (type 'grub'
as root).
When you see the grub prompt "grub> " you then tell
grub which is your root partition by typing
root (hd0,n)
where n is the number of your linux partition minus one,
e.g. if /dev/hda3 is your linux partition then n=2.
If you don't know which partition to use then just hit
the tab key at the spot where n should go and grub will
print a list of your partitions for you--nifty.
Once you have specified your root partition then you
actually install the boot sector by typing
setup (hd0)
Note that (hd0) refers to the master boot sector of
your first hard disk. If you want to install grub
on your root partition so you can use some other
master boot loader you would type something like this:
setup (hd0,2)
e.g. if your linux partition is /dev/hda3.
Grub should then tell you that the boot sector has
been written.
If the machine doesn't boot properly then you can
always re-edit the boot menu in real-time by hitting
'c' or 'e' at the grub boot prompt. It really is
a great tool--but I suggest you try installing grub
on a floppy disk before trying it on your hard disk.
That's the way I learned my way around grub--try it!
