I checked and found X wasn't installed with the server option, so I
reinstalled with the Gnome workstation option. I've run Xconfigurator and
got my resolution set right. When booting, the only failure I get is my
network card. Eth0 fails. I ran linuxconfigurator and it is showing eth0,
so I entered my info for host name, dns server and name server 1 and 2. I
then accepted and went to the shell and used ifconfig and I don't get the
correct info. I was following another @home users website install help
guide and it says to use 3coms utility to change the NIC from PNP to ISA. I
haven't tried that, but I did see a linux driver on the 3com site. What is
the correct way to get my NIC (3C905) to work in Gnome. Also, where can I
set up my soundcard?
Thanks

I installed RedHat 6.2 using Server configuration. It booted up fine, detected

However, when I ping other machines on the network, it takes a long time

Hi,
I am newbie so I hope the following description suffices to
understand what the problem is.
Iinstalled redhat 6.2 on my HP-Vectra machine and am having a problem
with printing normal text files. With some help I did the following,
- I got the control-panel up.
- Selected printers;
In "Input Filter" ->"Selected" the printer (Hp LaserJet)
Now my machine is on the network and all that, I can print to the
printer, but only the first line of the file gets printed on the page
and I get "two" copies of each page in the same manner.
I cant figure out what is wrong with my machine and how it is to be
configured. Any help or suggestion will be great.
Thanks and Regards

as to how to change the driver? The card is an 8MB rage pro.

Hi
I have the same "LI" problem. My linux partition is at the end of a 20GB
disk and beond the 1024 cyl restriction in LILO. I have seen this patch
earlyer and now I cant find it. The patch is at least half a year old and
should therefore be spread all over internett.

No, I can't mount any of them.
I just did a complete reinstall of 6.2 with kernel-2.2.14 and everything
was fine. I could mount all my partitions without any problems.. Then
I installed kernel-2.2.16 and I lost them again.
And like I said, I've rebuilt 2.2.16 half a dozen times now, thinking
I've been doing something wrong. I've built it with the fat, msdos and
vfat filesystems built in and also as modules. Same thing. I'm sure I
installed it correctly.
I haven't tried rebuilding without the OpenWall Project security patch,
I'll try that, but it doesn't seem like this patch would effect the
filesystem part of the kernel.
This is what the OpenWall patch adds with the default selections:
Security options
Non-executable user stack area (CONFIG_SECURE_STACK) [Y]
Autodetect and emulate GCC trampolines (CONFIG_SECURE_STACK_SMART) [Y]
Restricted links in /tmp (CONFIG_SECURE_LINK) [Y]
Restricted FIFOs in /tmp (CONFIG_SECURE_FIFO) [Y]
Restricted /proc (CONFIG_SECURE_PROC) [N]
Special handling of fd 0, 1, and 2 (CONFIG_SECURE_FD_0_1_2) [Y]
Enforce RLIMIT_NPROC on execve(2) (CONFIG_SECURE_RLIMIT_NPROC) [Y]
Destroy shared memory segments not in use (CONFIG_SECURE_SHM) [N]

For getting stuff from one computer to the other: it is possible to
set up a connection over a serial line or parallel port line to move information
from one computer to the other. But it will be somewhat difficult for a newbie
to do this...and the windows side can be more difficult to set up than the Linux
side. If you can afford a new computer, perhaps you can also afford two NICs
(network interface cards) and an ethernet cross over cable to link the two
machines. If you hunt around, you may be able to get new NICs (PCI or ISA) for
~$10 US each, and a long cable for about the same (try Computergate).
Try getting a newer OS version. There have been a LOT of
improvements since RH5.2 (which is about 2 years old now). You can get SUSE
(which comes with a good manual and around 6 CDs of software) for $30 US at
CompUSA. You can get the GPL part of most major distributions for about $2 US
plus shipping and handling from on-line houses such as Cheapbytes.
Some winmodems are starting to provide linux drivers. Yours might be one of
these....it's worth checking out.

Hi skeeter,
when you boot linux from the disc the lilo prompt appears, then you can
pass disc geometry data to the kernel (Cylinder heads and sectors) (You
may need expert mode or something like that, I don't know Suse) You can
find more specific info on the web about what exactly you need to pass
(search for HOW-TO's and on deja.com). I don't know the exact syntax
(it's something like hdc="Cyls,Heads,Sectors"), but I hope you will be
able to find the solution with these pointers.

You can burn with only SCSI support and the generic SCSI driver (and maybe
the vendor extensions). On the other hand, to read from it (mount it) you
will need SCSI-CD-ROM support too.

I figured out how to attempt to reset my root password from other
messages in this forum, but to no avail. I'm joing to reinstall slack
and and choose to NOT change my root password during install, and see
what happens. The unfortunate part is that the machine I'm installing
it on has no CDROM drive, and the install won't recognize the network
card.
Can you say "24 floppy disks"? I knew you could.
Sigh.

It could be a nameresolving problem.
Check your /etc/resolv.conf if there is a nameserver wich is not aviable at
the moment.
The 30 sec are the timeout.

Hi all,
I have Toshiba Tecra8100 laptop with RH6.2 installed. I have 2 PCMCIA
sockets availiable. I need one for ethernet card and another for serial
(actually GSM card). Each of them work fine, if it is alone.
I use 3com589 (network) and Psion Gold Card GSM (serial).
I tried Ericsson DC23 GSM card as well.
In case of 2 cards I have a problem with IRQ. I couldn't use
second card at all.
After booting with 2 cards:
#cardctl config
Socket 0: irq10
Socket 1: no information about irq...
If only one card inserted, it always gets irq10.
I have also followinf HW: com1(ttyS0), Yamaha sound, PS/2 mouse,
Lucent V.90 modem (I guess winmodem).
What could I do in order to get irq for second card?
Any help will be appreciated,
Alex

I really don't know what could be wrong here, but did you by any chance
enable the loopback devices? If so try to make a file and format that
with a FAT FS and mount it on a loop device. See if you can do that. It
would at least rule out problems with the FS modules.

Here is a response from the Gateway techs about turning off PNP, as a
possible solution to my sound problems. I have been trying for three
weeks to get my SB Live! card to work. All the drivers seem to be
there, and trying to work. I have tried them all, OSS \ Alsa \
Emu10k1. Maybe this isn't the problem, I don't know. If anyone knows
something I'm missing, PLEASE - let me know. The system can see my
Brooktree tuner card, 'sndconfig' see's the right sound card, but
that's as far as I can get. It doesn't see my PCI modem either, but I
don't care! My ethernet card works great.
"The Kadoka motherboard that you have there is only compatible with
Windows 98 and 98 SE. We have it listed as a "can't build" with

work with Windows 98 only, and none of them contain the Plug and Play

system compatibility of this motherboard, I would say that it's not
going to work with Linux."

I am a beginner too. But as I know, you should have the Linux /boot partition
at the first 1024 clusters.(all of
the partition) . Say, if the cluster size is 4k you should put the boot
partition in the first 8G of your hard disk.
Some thing like the following:
1. primary: 2G Windows system
2. primary: 16M Linux Ext2 /boot
3. extended: 1. 256M Linux swap
2. 5G Linux Ext2 /
3. 12G Windows app. and data
If you need to repartition your hard disk and want to preserve your data, you
will need partitionMagic at

"Userdel / deluser" does nothing (command not found). (I use "adduser"
to add.)
Looked through lots of documentation, but have come up emptyhanded.
Obviously I pretty much have no clue what I'm doing.
Can you help?
Lorne

Hi, I've got a very simple question, but might be simple in practice, I
want to change the name of my computer, cuz the guy that installed linux
for me entered the wrong name, so the IT guy asked me to change the name
of my computer, how do I do that without re-installing linux all over
again??
Thanks,
Sly.

IIRC, you just need to edit "/etc/HOSTNAME".
