Thanks a lot guys for pointing me my error. I thought that the peer is my
side of the connection.
No, I am not a malicious user. I am ISP for myself. I have modem connection
to a machine which is connected to the Internet. The machine is in the local
area, so I pay for connection only. Thanks again

Plus (I forgot in my first post) can you send text direct to the printer
e.g. #cat somefile.txt > /dev/lp0
obviously your printer may be lp1 or lp2 etc. This will check that the
hardware is functioning. Hope this catches you before you leave work.

I recompiled my kernel (2.2.12-20) to incorporate support for an
embedded NIC on my motherboard, and the compile completed successfully.
After amending /etc/lilo.conf to point to the new kernel, I ran lilo,
and received an error message indicating that the new kernel was too
big.

Any suggestions? The compiled size of the kernel was about 1.6M. The
machine is a PC clone - PIII-550 with 132MB ram. Redhat 6.2 is
installed in a standard server configuration.

Thanks.

Looked again--there is no "CC := anything " (i.e., I don't see a colon
in front of an equal sign).

There is a CC =$(CROSS_COMPILE)cc -D__KERNEL__ -I$(HPATH)

But it's not obvious that this is a gcc problem, per se...
Is there something in this line that should be altered?

Apparently it is. IIRC you need a bootable floppy image to be the first
thing that you write to the cd when creating it. Have never tried it so
I don't know how exactly to go about it. I think the CD-Writing-HOWTO
mentions how to do it.

I'm trying to install RH6.2 on a laptop without ide cdrom.
i tried to connect a backpack cdrom (to a parallel port) but
install doesn't have any drivers for pp cdroms.
Anyone tried such install before?

There is an option for cdrom module setup, but i'm not
sure about irq to use, and this laptop is absolutely awfull
when it comes to looking at the hardware. Any suggestions ?

It's no good stealing software if You can get it for free. The player
underneath mtv (mtvp) is usable without the license. If You want to
use the graphical front end, pay for it.

Besides, there are free alternatives to mtv (like xanim or smpeg -
based on sdl). ask google for 'free mpeg player linux'

I would probably grab partition magic, and boot up that under a dos floppy.
Then delete the windows partitions, and in they're spot, create a new type
83 linux partition and mount it as something like /pub or /home/pub, or
whatever. I would advise against using partition magic to "move" or "resize"
your existing linux partitions as this is never reliable. And make sure
you've backed up everything on there!!! Just in case of catastropy.

Ultimately, if it were me.... Backup stuff, copy all my hand tune scripts to
floppies, and wipe the drive(s) clean. Then do a fresh clean custom install
and by this time, you've probably rethought out the partitioning the
defaults use so now's the time to set up the sizes you want. By now you've
also probably decided that it would be nice to compile your own "speedy"
kernel so load up that on there and do it. Then bring it back up as a "live"
server/whatever that you normally use. I've gotten to where I can do it in
about 2 hours from scratch.

did you make the kernel with

Usually, the only hinderance to this card not functioning, is that PNP
support in the BIOS is turned on. Turn it off and tell your CMOS to reset
itself on next boot. It will reassign stuff. Sometimes moving the card to
another slot also helps. Those cards and they're predecessors never had
problems as did the SB-16's either.

I've tried various combinations of flags and settings in make

IN the shell you are doing the make from:

export CC=kgcc
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make modules

etc

I have a script I use for all that. Quite a bit more complex that the
above, but you should get the idea.

Did you try 'make bzImage' instead of 'zImage'? The old zImage format is
deprecatd. The `big zImage' format allows bigger kernels. Alternatively,
you could try makeing more stuff as modules, intead of being compiled
right in.

Subject: No text-mode after installation of X-windows (SuSE 7.0)
Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2000 15:28:49 +0100

Hello everybody,

I had some problems with the installation of X-windows on my DELL
inspiron notebook (SuSE 7.0). First I tried a resolution of 1024x768,
but fonts seemed to be blured. I had the some problem under windows with
this resolution. So I believe this is due to the fixed resolution of the
display. Hence I switch to 1400x1050, which works pretty nice under both
operating system. The problem is, that when I switch from the graphical
display to one of the text console (via Ctrl-Alt-1) the display is
constantly flashing and shows everything twice or more. This is probably
due to a wrong hsync frequence. It seems, that my installion is not
caplable of restoring the right frequences when switching back to the
text mode. While booting everything is fine, but after starting X (I use
KDE as window manager) I cannot restore text mode. Since I really need
the text mode in the case of a hanging X-system, I hope that somebody of
you might know answer.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Lars Diening

Subject: Missing operating system?
Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2000 10:44:19 -0500

I have installed RH 6.2. I asked used Disk Druid during setup, and
allocated 16 MB to /boot (it actually allocated 22 MB, I'm not sure why),
and the remaining free space to /. I also have a WinME partition. I
installed LILO on the first sector of the /boot partition. I was hoping
that if I set the /boot partition as active using fdisk from my dos startup
disk, I could get it to run lilo and boot (since I don't want to install
LILO on on MBR, due to paranoia). But this doesn't work. All I get is
"Missing Operating System" on the screen. Booting linux from a boot
diskette works fine, and setting my primary DOS partition as active results
in successful boot into WinME.

What am I doing wrong?

Eric
